1980 (MCMLXXX) was a leap year starting on Tuesday (dominical letter FE) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1980th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 980th year of the 2nd millennium, the 80th year of the 20th century, and the 1st year of the 1980s decade.
The Story So Far is an American pop punk band from Walnut Creek, California, formed in 2007.
The Story So Far formed in Walnut Creek, California in 2007. The band consisted of Parker Cannon on vocals, Kevin Geyer and Kevin Ambrose on guitar, Ryan Torf on drums, and Kelen Capener on bass. On December 22, the band released the 5 Songs EP. Ambrose parted ways with the band when he went to college in 2008 and he was replaced by William Levy. In March 2010 it was announced the band had signed to Pure Noise. Two months later the band released an EP, While You Were Sleeping (2010). In November, the band released a split with Maker.
Barrett Records released a split of The Story So Far and Morgan Foster in May 2011. Pure Noise released the band's debut album Under Soil and Dirt in June. On March 26, 2013, they released their second studio album, What You Don't See, which debuted at number 46 on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S. They have also released a split with Stick to Your Guns on June 18. The band was featured on the cover of Alternative Press' March 2013 issue "100 Bands You Need to Know." The band played the entire Warped Tour 2014 on the main stage.
A greatest hits album, sometimes called a "best of" album or a catalog album, is a compilation of songs by a particular artist or band. Most often the track list contains previously released recordings with a high degree of notability. However, to increase the appeal, especially to people who already own the original release, it is common to include remixes and/or alternate takes of popular songs; even new material (previously unreleased). At times a greatest hits compilation is the original release for songs that have themselves been released as a single and charted successfully.
Madonna's The Immaculate Collection is the best selling greatest hits compilation by a solo artist; all of the songs on it are presented in different versions than the original hit versions. The Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) is the best selling greatest hits compilation by a group and also one of the ten best selling albums in history. Greatest hits albums are typically produced after an artist has had enough successful songs to fill out an album release. Some artists, such as Mariah Carey, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Aerosmith, Kiss, U2, Dolly Parton, Journey, Los Tigres del Norte, Queen, Kylie Minogue and Billy Joel, have released multiple greatest hits albums through their long careers. Some greatest hits albums are released only at the end of the artist or group's career. For example, My Chemical Romance released a greatest hits album after they disbanded. Other artists, like Eminem have released hits albums in the center of their success. He released Curtain Call: The Hits in 2005 and then Shady XV as a compilation album in 2014.
A song is a single (and often standalone) work of music intended to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the repetition of sections. Written words created specifically for music or for which music is specifically created, are called lyrics. If a pre-existing poem is set to composed music in classical music it is an art song. Songs that are sung on repeated pitches without distinct contours and patterns that rise and fall are called chants. Songs in a simple style that are learned informally are often referred to as folk songs. Songs that are composed for professional singers are called popular songs. These songs, which have broad appeal, are often composed by professional songwriters, composers and lyricists. Art songs are composed by trained classical composers for concert performances. Songs are performed live and recorded. Songs may also appear in plays, musical theatre, stage shows of any form, and within operas.
This article includes an overview of the major events and trends in popular music in the 1980s.
The 1980s saw the emergence of dance music and new wave. As disco fell out of fashion in the decade's early years, genres such as post-disco, Italo disco, Euro disco and dance-pop became more popular. Rock music continued to enjoy a wide audience.Soft rock, glam metal, thrash metal, shred guitar characterized by heavy distortion, pinch harmonics and whammy bar abuse became very popular.Adult contemporary, quiet storm, and smooth jazz gained popularity. From the ending of the mid-80s-late 80s, Glam metal had become the largest, most commercially successful brand of music in the United States and worldwide.
The 1980s are commonly remembered for an increase in the use of digital recording, associated with the usage of synthesizers, with synthpop music and other electronic genres featuring non-traditional instruments increasing in popularity. Also during this decade, several major electronic genres were developed, including electro, techno, house, freestyle and Eurodance, rising in prominence during the 1990s and beyond. Throughout the decade, R&B, hip hop and urban genres were becoming commonplace, particularly in the inner-city areas of large, metropolitan cities; rap was especially successful in the latter part of the decade, with the advent of the golden age of hip hop. These urban genres—particularly rap and hip hop—would continue their rise in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s.

Plot: In 1977, Caroline Séguier, Matt Ribero, Abel Karnonski, Laure De Cigy and her brother Louis pass their oral entry exam to the ENA (Ecole Nationale d'Administration) and proudly find themselves studying in France's most prestigious school. Caroline, beautiful, hard-working, annoying and seductive, is a staunch supporter of François Mitterrand and is determined to succeed. Matt, a supporter of Michel Rocard comes from a family of steel workers in Lorraine and is proud to be the first in his family to escape his social status. Abel, a righteous young idealistic altruist, is the only one of the group already working (as a lawyer) and to have a wife and child (a little girl), whereas Laure and Louis come from a long line of aristocrats used to serving the State. The president and the government of France have been part of the right-wing party for more than twenty years and the students of the "Voltaire promotion" swear to themselves that they'll internally change a system they deem unfair and obsolete, starting with the man running their school... Determined to change the world, their arrival at the ENA marks the beginning of their political hopes and dreams. Abel wants to influence the way things go at the highest level of French administration. Caroline can't stand the system's unfair nature. Laure thinks that François Mitterand's election will restore the social balance. But their years spent at the ENA, during which victories and disillusions follow each other, confront them to the spirit of competition, to their personal ambition, to the system's injustice, and are just a rehearsal for what awaits them once they've graduated in 1980: the first round in a savage struggle for power. Hardened by their first experiences in the field, in embassies and police headquarters in Corsica and Africa, some learn how to use every weapon at their disposal. Others, constantly torn between their childhood dreams and their new responsibilities, struggle to embark on the path of compromise. For History does not wait. Called to the front lines a year later and propelled, thanks to François Mitterrand's victory, into the arcane mysteries of the State, these young "énarques" will be asked to make choices on which their careers, and France's future, will equally depend.

After realizing how different the Billboard Charts can be in other regions, I thought it might be fun to take a look at the top songs from the UK. Hopefully it'll bring back some memories for my friends across the pond and let people in the States have neat glimpse into something a little different. Note: Due to my respect for an artist's wishes concerning copyright laws, I removed two band's off this list. I removed (06) The Police, "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and (05) Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Geno." I added numbers 31 and 32. Just wanted to be transparent and let you guys know why. Last Disclaimer: I already realize that some of these songs might have been released earlier than 1980. I know this, lol. You don't have to message me to let me know : ) This is just based off ...

A year-long project by Sidney Lo sponsored by Self Edge and Superfuture® More information and photographs can be found at http://sidneylophoto.com --- An excerpt from my exhibition: ”From 1980 to 1981, performing artist Teching Hsieh punched a time clock every hour on the hour, twenty-four hours a day, for an entire year, to observe the passage of time. My series, entitled What Are You Wearing Today?, is an exercise in time and digital replication. I photographed myself everyday for an entire year, from March 10th, 2007 until March 10th, 2008. Like Teching Hsieh’s Time Piece, I illustrated the passage of time by shaving my head and letting it grow throughout the duration of my work. This subject of transience can also be observed by my jeans, which I have worn every single day to coinc...
In 2008 I directed four short documentary films for the ‘3 Minute Wonder’ strand on Channel 4. The core theme of each film centred on the idea of a gathering, be it a religious pilgrimage, a nightclub, a protest or one mans mission to save his town. It was my mission to create these simple docs with a cinematic approach and as a reflection of how docs in the 60’s and 70’s even in the 1980’s would have been shot on film using quality lenses. I felt the aesthetic approach to documentary was lost at that time and had given way to cheaper means of production, which is valid but held no allure. I also wanted to look at simple narratives that could work over a very short duration centred solely on the one character and in turn creating an intimate portrait of that person. The film Rocky was s...
When we think about the Berlin Wall, despite having an idea of how its length, we can’t easily envisage its real size. With this question in my mind, I decided to create a computer generated 3D model of the wall compiled together in a single frame. I started by conducting some research on Wikipedia: “ The "fourth-generation wall" (Grenzmauer 75) , known officially as "Stützwandelement UL 12.11" , was the final and most sophisticated version of the Berlin Wall. Begun in 1975 and completed about 1980, it was constructed from 45.000 separate sections of reinforced concrete, each 3.6 metres high and 1.2 metres wide. The concrete provisions added to this version of the Wall were done so as to prevent escapees from driving their cars through the barricades (“L” shape structure). The top of the...

And it's your only day, do you got all the truth?
oh you never feel the way you were...
I must have seen it, it's so familiar
oh she looks so familiar
must have seen it, oh you look so familiar
I must have seen her face before, I fell in love when I was born
now they hide her with a whisper, it's over
So it goes, never been a better time might as well make it now?
Oh it's your only day & you got all the truth
oh you'll never feel the way you were
now it's your only day is it all the truth?
Oh you never feel the way you were
The dead hand of the past only wishes to control your future
I must have seen it, it's so familiar
oh it looks so familiar
