Le film, résumé :
Jean LeGall, issu de la bourgeoisie, ambitieux, mène une carrière politique et littéraire. Pour la comédienne Janine Garnier, il abandonne sa femme et ses enfants. Janine a quitté sa famille, de modestes militants communistes, pour vivre sa vie. À la demande de la femme de Jean, elle le quitte, puis devient conseillère d'un groupe textile où elle doit résoudre le cas difficile de René Ragueneau, fils de paysan, catholique, devenu directeur d'usine.
Le film se déroule en permanence sur trois niveaux : l'histoire racontée, les représentations mentales des protagonistes influencées par le cinéma et par leurs souvenirs propres, et des images d'expérience sur les rats n'ayant pas de rapport évident sur le moment, mais qui deviennent éclairantes sur le comportement des personnages à la fin du film.
Selon Laborit, la conduite est réglée par quatre éléments: la consommation (boire, manger et copuler), la récompense, la punition (avec pour issues la lutte ou la fuite) et enfin l'inhibition de l'action.
Il reprend la théorie de Paul D. MacLean des trois niveaux cérébraux (ou "cerveau triunique", qui guidait la réflexion neuroscientifique à l'époque) :
Un cerveau reptilien, commun à tout le règne animal, qui assure nos réflexes de survie et qui dirige notre comportement de consommation;
Un deuxième « cerveau », le cerveau limbique, commun à tous les mammifères, celui de la mémoire, qui guide notre comportement de récompense : il nous fait fuir les expériences que l'on a connues douloureuses (Chat échaudé craint l'eau froide) et agir pour rechercher le plaisir. Si toutes les issues sont bouchées, l'inhibition de l'action provoque le stress et déclenche des maladies;
Notre troisième « cerveau », le néocortex, plus développé chez l'espèce humaine, permet d'associer des idées provenant d'expériences différentes plus abstraites. Il ne nous sert hélas bien souvent qu'à tenir un discours qui permet de justifier nos deux premiers comportements.
Le néocortex devrait nous permettre de comprendre que ces deux premiers cerveaux n'instaurent que des comportements de domination entre les hommes. Or l'homme n'est fait que de son contact avec les autres hommes. Ne pas être conscient qu'il faut au moins canaliser les instincts de domination (puisque nous ne pouvons les éliminer), ne peut conduire qu'au malheur individuel et collectif. Ainsi, selon Laborit qui conclut le film, connaître ces mécanismes ne permettrait certes pas de les éliminer, mais au moins de les utiliser pour faire autre chose, de même que l'étude patiente des lois du mouvement n'a nullement supprimé la gravité, mais nous a permis néanmoins d'aller nous promener sur la Lune !

Statues Also Die (French: Les Statues meurent aussi) is a 1953 French essay film directed by Chris Marker and Alain Resnais, about historical African art and the effects colonialism has had on how it is perceived. The film won the 1954 Prix Jean Vigo. Because of its criticism of colonialism, the second half of the film was censored in France until the 1960s.
Synopsis
The film exhibits a series of sculptures, masks and other traditional art from Sub-Saharan Africa. The images are frequently set to music and cut to the music's pace. The narrator focuses on the emotional qualities of the objects, and discusses the perception of African sculptures from a historical and contemporary European perspective. Only occasionally does the film provide the geographical origin, time period or other contextual information about the objects. The idea of a dead statue is explained as a statue which has lost its original significance and become reduced to a museum object, similarly to a dead person who can be found in history books. Interweaved with the objects are a few scenes of Africans performing traditional music and dances, as well as the death of a disemboweled gorilla.
During the last third of the film, the modern commercialisation of African culture is problematised. The film argues that colonial presence has compelled African art to lose much of its idiosyncratic expression, in order to appeal to Western consumers. A mention is made of how African currencies previously had been replaced by European. In the final segment, the film comments on the position of black Africans themselves in contemporary Europe and North America. Footage is seen from a Harlem Globetrotters basketball show, of the boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, and a jazz drummer intercut with scenes from a confrontation between police and labour demonstrators. Lastly the narrator argues that we should regard African and European art history as one inseparable human culture.

Alain Resnais
Alain Resnais (French: [alɛ̃ ʁɛnɛ]; 3 June 1922 – 1 March 2014) was a French film director whose career extended over more than six decades. After training as a film editor in the mid-1940s, he went on to direct a number of short films which included Night and Fog (1955), an influential documentary about the Nazi concentration camps.
Resnais began making feature films in the late 1950s and consolidated his early reputation with Hiroshima mon amour (1959), Last Year at Marienbad (1961), and Muriel (1963), all of which adopted unconventional narrative techniques to deal with themes of troubled memory and the imagined past. These films were contemporary with, and associated with, the French New Wave (la nouvelle vague), though Resnais did not regard himself as being fully part of that movement. He had closer links to the "Left Bank" group of authors and filmmakers who shared a commitment to modernism and an interest in left-wing politics. He also established a regular practice of working on his films in collaboration with writers previously unconnected with the cinema such as Jean Cayrol, Marguerite Duras, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jorge Semprún and Jacques Sternberg.

Le film, résumé :
Jean LeGall, issu de la bourgeoisie, ambitieux, mène une carrière politique et littéraire. Pour la comédienne Janine Garnier, il abandonne sa femme et ses enfants. Janine a quitté sa famille, de modestes militants communistes, pour vivre sa vie. À la demande de la femme de Jean, elle le quitte, puis devient conseillère d'un groupe textile où elle doit résoudre le cas difficile de René Ragueneau, fils de paysan, catholique, devenu directeur d'usine.
Le film se déroule en permanence sur trois niveaux : l'histoire racontée, les représentations mentales des protagonistes influencées par le cinéma et par leurs souvenirs propres, et des images d'expérience sur les rats n'ayant pas de rapport évident sur le moment, mais qui deviennent éclairantes sur le comportement des personnages à la fin du film.
Selon Laborit, la conduite est réglée par quatre éléments: la consommation (boire, manger et copuler), la récompense, la punition (avec pour issues la lutte ou la fuite) et enfin l'inhibition de l'action.
Il reprend la théorie de Paul D. MacLean des trois niveaux cérébraux (ou "cerveau triunique", qui guidait la réflexion neuroscientifique à l'époque) :
Un cerveau reptilien, commun à tout le règne animal, qui assure nos réflexes de survie et qui dirige notre comportement de consommation;
Un deuxième « cerveau », le cerveau limbique, commun à tous les mammifères, celui de la mémoire, qui guide notre comportement de récompense : il nous fait fuir les expériences que l'on a connues douloureuses (Chat échaudé craint l'eau froide) et agir pour rechercher le plaisir. Si toutes les issues sont bouchées, l'inhibition de l'action provoque le stress et déclenche des maladies;
Notre troisième « cerveau », le néocortex, plus développé chez l'espèce humaine, permet d'associer des idées provenant d'expériences différentes plus abstraites. Il ne nous sert hélas bien souvent qu'à tenir un discours qui permet de justifier nos deux premiers comportements.
Le néocortex devrait nous permettre de comprendre que ces deux premiers cerveaux n'instaurent que des comportements de domination entre les hommes. Or l'homme n'est fait que de son contact avec les autres hommes. Ne pas être conscient qu'il faut au moins canaliser les instincts de domination (puisque nous ne pouvons les éliminer), ne peut conduire qu'au malheur individuel et collectif. Ainsi, selon Laborit qui conclut le film, connaître ces mécanismes ne permettrait certes pas de les éliminer, mais au moins de les utiliser pour faire autre chose, de même que l'étude patiente des lois du mouvement n'a nullement supprimé la gravité, mais nous a permis néanmoins d'aller nous promener sur la Lune !

Statues Also Die (French: Les Statues meurent aussi) is a 1953 French essay film directed by Chris Marker and Alain Resnais, about historical African art and the effects colonialism has had on how it is perceived. The film won the 1954 Prix Jean Vigo. Because of its criticism of colonialism, the second half of the film was censored in France until the 1960s.
Synopsis
The film exhibits a series of sculptures, masks and other traditional art from Sub-Saharan Africa. The images are frequently set to music and cut to the music's pace. The narrator focuses on the emotional qualities of the objects, and discusses the perception of African sculptures from a historical and contemporary European perspective. Only occasionally does the film provide the geographical origin, time period or other contextual information about the objects. The idea of a dead statue is explained as a statue which has lost its original significance and become reduced to a museum object, similarly to a dead person who can be found in history books. Interweaved with the objects are a few scenes of Africans performing traditional music and dances, as well as the death of a disemboweled gorilla.
During the last third of the film, the modern commercialisation of African culture is problematised. The film argues that colonial presence has compelled African art to lose much of its idiosyncratic expression, in order to appeal to Western consumers. A mention is made of how African currencies previously had been replaced by European. In the final segment, the film comments on the position of black Africans themselves in contemporary Europe and North America. Footage is seen from a Harlem Globetrotters basketball show, of the boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, and a jazz drummer intercut with scenes from a confrontation between police and labour demonstrators. Lastly the narrator argues that we should regard African and European art history as one inseparable human culture.

Defining the words 'art film' for a generation, Marienbad is every bit as extraordinary today as when it was premiered in Venice, 50 years ago this August.
The plot is banal and, as in Hiroshima, the characters have no names. X (Albertazzi) pursues A (Seyrig) through the endless corridors of a luxury hotel, trying to persuade her that they met last year, while M (Pitoëff), who may be A's husband, looks on. But, in the eternal present of Robbe-Grillet's screenplay, drenched in the organ score by Francis Seyrig (brother of Delphine), there can be no 'last year' (and probably no future either). Don't miss the chance to see this timeless masterpiece on the big screen, for which the inky blacks and flaring whites of Sacha Vierny's cinematography were made. There is, quite simply, no other movie like it.
Last Year in Marienbad was re-released by the BFI on 8 July 2011.
