Big Boy or Big Boys may refer to:
The Tektronix 4010 series was a family of text and graphics computer terminals based on the company's storage tube technology. There were several members of the family introduced through the 1970s, the best known being the 11-inch 4010 and 19-inch 4014. They were widely used in the CAD market in the 1970s and early 1980s.
The 4000 series were much less expensive than earlier graphics terminals, such as the IBM 2250, because no additional electronics were needed to maintain the display on the screen. They remained popular until the introduction of inexpensive graphics workstations in the 1980s. The new graphics workstations used raster displays and dedicated screen buffers that became more affordable as solid state memory chips became cheaper.
The Tektronix direct-view storage tube was first used in the Tektronix 564 oscilloscope in 1963, and was first used for non-oscilloscope applications in the 601 monitor in 1968. A number of graphics terminals based on this tube and others from the 600-series were developed, including the Advanced Remote Display Station from MIT's Project MAC, and the KV8I (later, KV8E) from Digital Equipment Corporation using the later 11-inch diagonal 611. These consisted of just the tube and related basic electronics, it was up to software on the host computer to produce a display by driving the controls directly.
The Union Pacific Railroad (reporting mark UP) is a Class I line haul freight railroad that operates nearly 8,500 locomotives over 32,000 route-miles in 23 states west of Chicago, Illinois and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Union Pacific Railroad network is the largest in the United States and is serviced by more than 47,000 employees.
Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating company of Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP); both are headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Over the years Union Pacific Corporation has grown by acquiring other railroads, notably the Missouri Pacific, Chicago & North Western, Western Pacific, Missouri-Kansas-Texas, and the Southern Pacific (including the Denver & Rio Grande Western).
Union Pacific Corporation's main competitor is the BNSF Railway, the nation's second largest freight railroad, which also primarily services the Continental U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Together, the two railroads have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the U.S.
Big Boy is the popular name of the American Locomotive Company 4000-class 4-8-8-4 articulated, coal-fired, steam locomotives manufactured between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959.
The Big Boy fleet of twenty five locomotives were used primarily in the Wyoming Division to haul freight over the Wasatch mountains between Green River, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. They were the only locomotives to use a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement consisting of a four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves, two sets of eight driving wheels and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.
According to Union Pacific senior manager of Heritage Operations Ed Dickens Jr., the 4-8-8-4 series originally was to have been called "Wasatch". One day while one of the engines was being built an unknown worker scrawled "Big Boy" in chalk on its front. With that, the legendary name was born and has stuck ever since.
Union Pacific introduced the Challenger-type (4-6-6-4) locomotives in 1936 on its main line over the Wasatch Range between Green River, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. For most of the route, the maximum grade is 0.82% in either direction, but the climb eastward from Ogden, Utah into the Wasatch Range reached 1.14%. Hauling a 3,600-short-ton (3,300 t; 3,200-long-ton) freight train demanded doubleheading and helper operations, and adding and removing helper engines slowed operations.
Union Pacific 4014, or UP 4014, is a four-cylinder articulated 4-8-8-4 Big Boy-type steam locomotive owned by Union Pacific Railroad. 4014 was retired from service on July 21, 1959 and donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona on December 1961. The locomotive reached its destination in January 1962 and was displayed in Fairplex until November 2013. Union Pacific 4014 is currently in Union Pacific's Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, awaiting extensive restoration work which is intended to return the engine to operational status. When 4014 officially returns to service, it will displace UP 3985 as the largest, heaviest and most powerful operational steam locomotive in the world.
UP 4014 was one of 25 4-8-8-4 class locomotives developed by Union Pacific and Alco to overcome issues with the preceding 4-6-6-4 Challenger class locomotives. It was determined that the goals that Union Pacific had set for its new class of locomotive could be achieved by making several changes to the existing Challenger design, including enlarging the firebox to approximately 235 by 96 inches (5.97 m × 2.44 m) (about 155 sq ft or 14.4 m2), lengthening the boiler, adding four driving wheels and reducing the size of the driving wheels from 69 to 68 in (1,753 to 1,727 mm).
In July of 2013, the Union Pacific Railroad reacquired Big Boy steam locomotive number 4014 from the Rail Giants Train Museum at the Pomona Fairplex with the intention of restoring number 4014 to operating condition. Once in working order, the locomotive will become part of the Union Pacific's Steam Program. Built in 1941 by the American Locomotive works, the Big Boy is considered to be the biggest steam locomotive ever built. Come along as we follow the Big Boy on the first leg of its journey to its new home in Cheyenne, Wyoming where it will undergo restoration to operating condition. This video includes coverage of initial prep work by the UP Steam Team to get the locomotive moving as well as shots from the January 26th, 2014 move from Pomona to Union Pacific's West Colton Yard.
3x time lapse of May 7, 2014 footage UP4014 ran at 25 mph on the return so 258 seconds reduced to 86 seconds would be equalivant to 75mph. If all goes well in a few years this will be for real.

Here is Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014, under restoration at the railroad's Cheyenne, Wyoming Steam Shop on May 21, 2017. It is hoped the big Alco will return to steam by the 150th Anniversary of the Golden Spike in 2019.
Ed Dickens, Union Pacific senior manager - heritage operations, discusses progress on the restoration of the Big Boy, locomotive No. 4014, and what's involved in preparing for locomotive No. 844's trip to Memphis, Tennessee.
This video features views of UP steamers Nos. 844 (4-8-4), 3985 (4-6-6-4), "Big Boy"4014 (4-8-8-4), and 5511 (2-10-2) together with peeks of Centennial No. 6936 and other scenes from "Uncle Pete's" May 21, 2017 open house in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Locomotive No. 844 moves the Big Boy, locomotive No. 4014, to the turntable in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in preparation for the massive restoration project.
A brief history of the 4014 during it's years of operation, and my personal thoughts about the huge impact an operating Big Boy will have on the world of railroading. When I say "dawn of the superpower era" I am referring to America being known as a superpower country after WWII. The "superpower" meaning for steam engines was coined by Lima in the mid 1920's to define steam engines with enlarged fireboxes, supported by two trailing axles. The magnitude of moving Americas largest Steam Engine (1,250,00 lbs) across a 5000 foot parking lot to where it can be moved onto a set of rails and then ultimately to Cheyenne, WY is clearly a historical event. This video tries to document the crux of the move onto a Metrolink commuter line and then to a Union Pacific (UP) rail yard at Colton, CA. This task needed to be conducted at night to minimize the disruption to travelers. This video is 49 minutes long, and may not be for those without the interest in the history of Steam Engines, and railroading in their blood. Special kudos go to the hundreds of UP workers, special equipment companies, and both Railroad and City police forces along with possible thousands of rail fans along the route who took the time to take pictures and vide...

Boiler cold; prospects hot! The largest steam locomotive in the world deadheaded its way toward Cheyenne, Wyoming on 1 May 2014 for restoration to running condition. Listen to its deep whistle (even without steam...) Have you subscribed to Airailimages on YouTube? Thanks!
It was a day I will never forget. The Day Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 was towed over Cajon Pass. We saw sights that made history, as well as met and made new friends. As she made her way over the Cajon Sub, an amazing number of people turned out to see 4014 roll past. The lead locomotive is EMD SD70M number 4014, followed by Big Boy 4014, then SD70M 4884, all with the hospital train in tow. We will also see some normal BNSF traffic along the way, plus an MOW parade.Just think, in a few more years, she will come back under her own steam. I would like to apologize for some shaky shots. I actually forgot to bring my tripod on this trip (OF ALL THE TIMES!) Please rate and comment, Thanx! :-) John 3:16
