Esther Walker (Oct.18,1894 - July 26,1943) was an American musical comedy performer.
She was born Esther Thomas in Pewee Valley, Kentucky. Adopting the stage name of Esther Walker, she appeared on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in a 1919 production of Monte Cristo, Jr., and later that year performed at the 44th Street Theatre in Hello, Alexander.
Walker recorded over 32 songs for Victor and Brunswick record labels, during the years 1919-1920 and 1925--1927, including "Sahara (We'll Soon Be Dry Like You)" from Monte Cristo, Jr. Walker wed Texas businessman Karl Hoblitzelle, a successful manager of movie and vaudeville theatres.
The two founded the Hoblitzelle Foundation in 1942, which still exists today.
Esther Walker died of cancer in Dallas, Texas on July 26, 1943 at the age of 48.

Ruth Etting (November 23, 1896 -- September 24, 1978) was an American singing star and actress of the 1920s and 1930s, who had over 60 hit recordings and worked in stage, radio, and film. She is known as "America's sweetheart of song".
Good News is a musical with a book by Laurence Schwab and B.G. DeSylva, lyrics by DeSylva and Lew Brown, and music by Ray Henderson. The story is set in the Roaring Twenties at Tait College, where football star Tom Marlowe falls in love with studious Connie Lane, who is tutoring him so he can pass astronomy and be eligible to play in the big game.
The show opened on Broadway in 1927, the same year as Show Boat, but though its plot was decidedly old-fashioned in comparison to Show Boat's daring storyline, it was also a hit. Good News spawned two films, an unsuccessful 1974 Broadway revival, and a 1993 updated production by Music Theatre of Wichita, which made numerous changes to the score, adding such numbers as "Button Up Your Overcoat", "You're the Cream in My Coffee" and "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries". It has since been licensed for use by amateur groups. It proved to be DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson's biggest hit out of a string of topical musicals.
MGM released two film versions, the first in 1930 with Bessie Love and Cliff Edwards and the second in 1947 with June Allyson and Peter Lawford. The Railroad Hour broadcast a 45-minute condensed version as its first episode on October 4, 1948.

She was born Esther Thomas in Louisville, Kentucky. on October 18, 1894.
She adopted a stage name (Esther Walker) as many did in the entertainment world at her time, especially females since performing on the stage was not respectable--such a profession could bring shame to the family.
In 1919 Esther Walker was in the Winter Garden Theater production of "Monte Cristo, Jr."
She made records in 1919 and 1920, and then stopped until she resumed from 1925 to 1927, making discs for Victor, Brunswick, and others. "Sahara" was one successful Victor disc (her face graced some sheet music covers, including for "Sahara").
In 1920, as her career was taking off, she married the wealthy Karl Hoblitzelle.
In 1942 Karl and Esther chartered a philanthropic foundation called the Hoblitzelle Foundation. The Foundation's website gives this information: "Karl Hoblitzelle was born in St. Louis during the late 19th Century. After serving as an event manager at the St. Louis World's Fair, he came to Dallas, Texas in 1903 and built a chain of vaudeville theaters. These auditoriums were soon transformed into movie houses, and the success of Mr. Hoblitzelle's entertainment business created financial resources which he invested in the growing oil and gas, real estate, and banking industries in Texas. He married Esther Thomas in 1920, a Broadway starlet who performed under the name of 'Esther Walker.' Both were active in the social, civic, and cultural activities of Dallas and established the Foundation in 1942. Mrs. Hoblitzelle died unexpectedly in 1943, and Mr. Hoblitzelle lived until 1967. During his lifetime, he was primarily interested in agronomy, medical research and teaching, community affairs, and education."
Esther Walker died of cancer in Dallas, Texas, on July 26, 1943. Her husband died in March of 1967.

Just recorded a small collection of Esther Walker tunes. She was an American musical comedy performer and recorded 32 songs for Victor and Brunswick record labels during the years 1919-1920 and 1925-1927. The height of her recording success was probably in 1926 when she recorded the Brunswick sides "Ya Gotta Know How To Love" and "As Long As I Have You And You Have Me".

From the Broadway show GOOD NEWS by De Sylva, Brown, and Henderson, George Olsen and His Music plays "Lucky In Love" - Orthophonic Victor 20872. Vocal refrain by Bob Bolger, Fran Frey, and Bob Rice. The original Broadway production, directed by Edgar MacGregor and choreographed by Bobby Connolly, opened on Sept. 6, 1927 at The 46th Street Theatre, where it ran for 557 performances, which was a very successful run, as few if any Broadway shows had reached 500 performances since 1919's Irene. The cast included John Price Jones as Tom Marlowe, Mary Lawlor as Connie Lane, Gus Shy as Bobby Randall, and Inez Courtney as Babe O'Day. Donald Oenslager designed the production's sets. GMMIX is well aware that some may question playing a 1927 Orthophonic on a Victor V horn machine, but the sound-box---rebuilt by Wyatt Markus--- reproduces most types of recordings surprisingly well. Accordingly, this video is presented to show what kind of reproduction can be obtained from a horn machine with a high-quality Exhibition-style sound-box. -

Esther Walker (Oct.18,1894 - July 26,1943) was an American musical comedy performer. She was born Esther Thomas in Pewee Valley, Kentucky. Adopting the stage name of Esther Walker, she appeared on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in a 1919 production of Monte Cristo, Jr., and later that year performed at the 44th Street Theatre in Hello, Alexander. Walker recorded over 32 songs for Victor and Brunswick record labels, during the years 1919-1920 and 1925--1927, including "Sahara (We'll Soon Be Dry Like You)" from Monte Cristo, Jr. Walker wed Texas businessman Karl Hoblitzelle, a successful manager of movie and vaudeville theatres. Esther Walker sings "Good News" on Brunswick 3666. Here is a great song with music by Ray Henderson and lyrics by B. G. DeSylva and Lew Brown. This was recorded on September 27, 1927, according to Ross Laird's Brunswick discography.
The superb piano playing is by Rube Bloom.
The song is from the show Good News, which opened on Broadway on September 6, 1927, at Chanin's 46th Street Theater.
Esther Walker was an entertainer in the 1920s with modest success as a recording artist.
She was born Esther Thomas in Louisville, Kentucky. on October 18, 1894.
She adopted a stage name (Esther Walker) as many did in the entertainment world at her time, especially females since performing on the stage was not respectable--such a profession could bring shame to the family.
In 1919 Esther Walker was in the Winter Garden Theater production of "Monte Cristo, Jr."
She made records in 1919 and 1920, and then stopped until she resumed from 1925 to 1927, making discs for Victor, Brunswick, and others. "Sahara" was one successful Victor disc (her face graced some sheet music covers, including for "Sahara").
In 1920, as her career was taking off, she married the wealthy Karl Hoblitzelle.
In 1942 Karl and Esther chartered a philanthropic foundation called the Hoblitzelle Foundation. The Foundation's website gives this information: "Karl Hoblitzelle was born in St. Louis during the late 19th Century. After serving as an event manager at the St. Louis World's Fair, he came to Dallas, Texas in 1903 and built a chain of vaudeville theaters. These auditoriums were soon transformed into movie houses, and the success of Mr. Hoblitzelle's entertainment business created financial resources which he invested in the growing oil and gas, real estate, and banking industries in Texas. He married Esther Thomas in 1920, a Broadway starlet who performed under the name of 'Esther Walker.' Both were active in the social, civic, and cultural activities of Dallas and established the Foundation in 1942. Mrs. Hoblitzelle died unexpectedly in 1943, and Mr. Hoblitzelle lived until 1967. During his lifetime, he was primarily interested in agronomy, medical research and teaching, community affairs, and education."
Esther Walker died of cancer in Dallas, Texas, on July 26, 1943. Her husband died in March of 1967.

The original Broadway production, directed by Edgar MacGregor and choreographed by Bobby Connolly, opened on Sept. 6, 1927 at The 46th Street Theatre, where it ran for 557 performances, which was a very successful run, as few if any Broadway shows had reached 500 performances since 1919's Irene. The cast included John Price Jones as Tom Marlowe, Mary Lawlor as Connie Lane, Gus Shy as Bobby Randall, and Inez Courtney as Babe O'Day. Donald Oenslager designed the production's sets.
GMMIX is well aware that some may question playing a 1927 Orthophonic on a Victor V horn machine, but the sound-box---rebuilt by Wyatt Markus--- reproduces most types of recordings surprisingly well. Accordingly, this video is presented to show what kind of reproduction can be obtained from a horn machine with a high-quality Exhibition-style sound-box.
