Dhoti
The dhoti, also known as vesti, dhuti, mardani, dhoteé, lacha, dhotra, is a traditional men's garment, worn in South Asia mainly by Indian, Nepalese and Bengali people. It is worn predominantly in the countries of India, Southern Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and southern Afghanistan. It is the national dress of Madhesh region of Southern Nepal worn mainly by Nepalis of Madhesi, Tharu, Maithali and Bahun ethnicity. It is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4.5 metres (15 ft) long, wrapped around the waist and the legs and knotted at the waist.
Etymology
The word dhoti is derived from (Sanskrit: धौती) dhauti meaning to cleanse or wash. In context of garment, it simply refers to cleansed garment which was worn during shrauta sacrifices or religious session in general. Dhoti evolved from ancient Anatariya which was passed through legs, tucked at the back and covered the legs loosely, then flowed into a long pleats at front of the legs, the same way it is worn today.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (also transliterated Caitanya, IAST Caitanya Mahāprabhu; 18 February 1486 – 14 June 1534) was a Bengali spiritual teacher. He is believed by his devotees to be Krishna himself who appeared in the form of His own devotee in order to teach the people of this world the process of Bhakti and how to attain the perfection of life. He is considered as the most merciful manifestation of Krishna. Chaitanya was the proponent for the Vaishnava school of Bhakti yoga (meaning loving devotion to God), based on Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita. Of various incarnations of Vishnu, he is revered as Krishna, popularised the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and composed the Siksastakam (eight devotional prayers) in Sanskrit. His followers, Gaudiya Vaishnavas, revere him as a Krishna with the mood and complexion of his source of inspiration Radha.
Chaitanya is sometimes referred to by the names Gauranga or Gaura due to his fair complexion, and Nimai due to his being born underneath a Neem tree. There is no evidence, however, that he was born under a Neem Tree. He was very naughty in his young days. His original name was Vishambhar. He was a brilliant student and Nimai was his nickname. At an early age he became an scholar and opened a school. His teachings helped flourish Bhakti movement in east India, particularly Bengal and Odisha from 16th century onwards.

Do it yourself, also known as DIY, is the method of building, modifying, or repairing something without the direct aid of experts or professionals. Academic research describes DIY as behaviors where "individuals engage raw and semi-raw materials and component parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g. landscaping)". DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement (craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness)
The term "do-it-yourself" has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 primarily in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities. The phrase "do it yourself" had come into common usage (in standard English) by the 1950s, in reference to the emergence of a trend of people undertaking home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational and cost-saving activity.

Sri Chinmoy
Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, better known as Sri Chinmoy (27 August 1931 – 11 October 2007), was an Indian spiritual master who taught meditation in the West after moving to New York City in 1964. Chinmoy established his first meditation center in Queens, New York, and eventually had thousands of students in 60 countries. A prolific author, artist, poet, and musician, he also held public events such as concerts and meditations on the theme of inner peace. Chinmoy also advocated athleticism to achieve spiritual enlightenment, including distance running, swimming, and weightlifting. He organized marathons and other races, and was an active runner and, following a knee injury, weightlifter.
Biography
Early years in India
Chinmoy was the youngest of seven children, born in Shakpura, Boalkhali Upazila, in the Chittagong District of East Bengal (now Bangladesh). He lost his father to illness in 1943, and his mother a few months later. In 1944, the 12-year-old Chinmoy joined his brothers and sisters at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, where elder brothers Hriday and Chitta had already established a presence.

Sri Chinmoy in Miyazaki
In October 1993 spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) visited Miyazaki, Japan. There he participated in the 10th "World Veterans'Championships" with a 100 m sprint in his age category and gave four Peace Concerts, one of them being presented in this video with its highlights: several silent meditations of the master, his playing on the conch, the bamboo flute, the Indian harmonium and the piano. In this episode we visit the temple in present day Navadvipa, India called Dhamesvara Mahaprabhu. There is a deity of Sri Chaitanya in this temple called Dhamesvara Mahaprabhu. The deity of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in this temple is said to have been worshiped by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s wife, Srimati Vishnupriya devi, after the Lord took sannyasa. This deity of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has His arms extended out, lovingly towards His devotees. Visnupriya was sixteen years old when Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa and she disappeared from this material world at the age of ninety-six, so she worshiped this deity for eighty years. Wooden shoes (silver casing) are kept in this temple which are said to have been worn by Lord Chaitanya. Since it is believed that Vishnu entered the deity upon leaving her manifest pastimes, the deity occasionally assumes the form of Vishnu Priya by wearing sari and nose ring instead of the regular kurta and dhoti cloth.

In 2014, we embarked on a journey to visit the birth place of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a divine incarnation of Krishna. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu started the Krishna bhakti movement here 500 years ago, and it is still going strong today. Join us as we explore the roots of the Krishna bhakti movement, and visit temples, and asrama to learn about India's awesome spiritual philosophy and of the greatest mystic teachers the world has ever known.
In this episode we visit the temple in present day Navadvipa, India called Dhamesvara Mahaprabhu. There is a deity of Sri Chaitanya in this temple called Dhamesvara Mahaprabhu. The deity of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in this temple is said to have been worshiped by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s wife, Srimati Vishnupriya devi, after the Lord took sannyasa. This deity of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has His arms extended out, lovingly towards His devotees. Visnupriya was sixteen years old when Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa and she disappeared from this material world at the age of ninety-six, so she worshiped this deity for eighty years. Wooden shoes (silver casing) are kept in this temple which are said to have been worn by Lord Chaitanya. Since it is believed that Vishnu entered the deity upon leaving her manifest pastimes, the deity occasionally assumes the form of Vishnu Priya by wearing sari and nose ring instead of the regular kurta and dhoti cloth.

There is so much confusion in this (Hyolmo dress)case which has been created in our people. In context to Hyolmo (Helambu) our dress is Daura Suruwal which is also called LAPTAR FUNGSHO in Hyolmo language; here Laptar refers to Daura and Fungsho refers to white or black woolen jacket made from sheep. When we talk about Hyolmo/Yolmo/ Helambu we are talking about that particular place. I was born there and raised there; till now people have been wearing daura suruwal and fungsho as a dress.
I think this dress is particularly our Hyolmo dress. We have been wearing for long time since Hyolmo is there and this dress are made in Hyolmo.
Every people have the right to speak ……In this topic people have mentioned so many things but some things are still very unclear. Some of my friends say that our dress should be Chhuba…… I won’t say no if it is in context to Tibet, Sherpa’s, etc but we are not Tibetans…We are Hyolmos …we came from Hyolmo. If we go farther then that we could be anything… In hyolmo we have Gale family who came from Gurung, Sherpa family who came from Solu, Tamang family…who became Hyolmo by adopting Hyolmo culture (who have been living there for a long time), Lhoba family who came from China to Tibet and Bhutan to Hyolmo. People from China like..Chineya lama and other people from Mongolia….etc
Now if we keep on searching for our pre-existing ancestral history we are in for a long ride…..
Hyolmo culture is defined as particular society at the particular time and place.
Some of friends said:
1. Some people say we came from Tibet and we have similar language, culture and religion that’s why we should wear Chhuba even during social meetings.
2. We are Buddhist and we have to wear chhuba, 3.some said Daura suruwal is our national dress….. and Rana regime forced us to wear daura suruwal…..?
My answer :
1) If anybody came from Tibet then it is better to called themselves Tibetan.. Here we HYOLMOS came from Hyolmo and we are talking about Hyolmo which is in Nepal not in Tibet. We have unique culture which is different then others. When someone dies we do “Gyewa”. On that day we do Mani dance which is introduced by Guru Rinpoche, called “Mani Tsyopa”, we make “Babar and Thongse” special cultural dish on Losar and we usually celebrate Losar a month earlier then Tibetan, there is the practice of marrying one’s maternal uncle’s aunt’s daughter etc….
2) Yes, most of the Hyolmo practice Buddhism it doesn’t mean we have to wear Chuba. I don’t think it is mentioned to wear Chhuba in the Buddhist philosophy or the book. Founder of Buddhism “Buddha” was born in Nepal and has never been to Tibet. If you are talking about yogi who brought Buddhism to Tibet “Guru Rinpoche” who is also known as “Urgen Pema Jungne ” then he was born near east Pakistan or Ost-Pakistan now called Bangladesh. After that he went to Tso-Pema, India. While practicing religion, rumors were spread that Guru and princess Mandarava acted improperly. So the king ordered to burn Guru. (Long history)After that Guru reincarnated from Lotus and that’s how we called Padmasamvawa. So if we follow Buddha and Guru then we need to wear kind of Dhoti….Before Guru there was no Buddhism in Tibet that they practice as `Bon``.
3) When Daura suruwal is cultural dress of indigenous people like Tamang, Newar, Thakali and other. How come Hyolmo wearing daura suruwal is national dress? Top of that we have unique dress then other like Fungsho, Nambu Kara ( Scraf) and Ngolkoti Gapti, which is made in Hyolmo only. As we all know our ancestor were yak and sheep herding people in Hyolmo. Fungsho is made there and still people using it. My point is that what ever we utilize and make in that particular place should be our cultural dress.
If daura suruwal is national dress then let’s go back to our history. Our Hyolmo’s history goes much further than 800 years and up. Do you guys know since when daura suruwal became a national dress? It was after the time of King Prithivi Narayan shah. Does anyone notice that the King of Nepal Prithivi Narayan shah was wearing something other than Daura Surwal. If we count the years after Prithivi narayan shah who united Nepal then it has been approximately 250 years but our history goes much further than that. If Rana regime had forced us to wear daura suruwal, then why was it only implied to us (Hyolmo people)? Is it because we are near to Kathmandu? If so, then there are so many other places surrounding Kathmandu and I can still see that they are wearing Chhuba why not Daura Suruwal (That’s what you guys called National dress)
Nowadays, People find other cultural dresses, languages fascinating and hesitate to wear their own cultural dress. This is my opinion, I might be wrong but dress is not only solution to develop our Hyolmo. There so many things to be done ……. Future of Hyolmo is in our hand; let’s preserve our Hyolmo culture by mutual understanding.
