A hanging scroll (Chinese: 立軸; pinyin: lìzhóu; also called 軸 or 掛軸) is one of the many traditional ways to display and exhibit Chinese painting and calligraphy. Displaying the art in this way allowed public appreciation and appraisal of the aesthetics of the scrolls in its entirety by the audience. It is to be distinguished from the handscroll, which was narrower and often much longer and not designed to be all visible at once. The technique was imported to Japan and Korea who each have their own traditions and aesthetics.
Hanging scrolls are generally intended to be displayed for short periods of time and are then rolled up to be tied and secured for storage. The hanging scrolls get rotated according to season or occasion, as such works are never intended to be on permanent display. The painting surface of the paper or silk can be mounted with decorative brocade silk borders. In the composition of a hanging scroll, the foreground is usually at the bottom of the scroll while the middle and far distances are at the middle and top respectively.
Senior Conservator Mrs Jin Xian Qiu has spent the last 43 years mastering the traditional Chinese method of mounting a hanging scroll. Watch as she prepares and hangs two works by Chinese artist Qu Leilei – a process that takes a whole year. The works – 'Journey' and 'Lei Feng' – are both created using ink on traditional xuan paper and have been donated to the British Museum by the artist. Qu Leilei (b. 1951) is a calligrapher, painter and author. He was one of the founding members of the Stars Group alongside his contemporaries Ma Desheng, Wang Keping, Huang Rui, Li Shuang, Zhong Acheng and Ai Weiwei. The works will be on display in Room 91a at the British Museum from November to December 2015. Qu Leilei will be discussing contemporary Chinese art with Shen Kuiyi and Ma Desheng at th...
Hideyuki Kamon makes Kakejiku -- the hanging scrolls you see in japanese tea rooms, temples or traditional guest houses. He is what is called a "Hyōgushi", a scroll mounter. In 2012, I visited him in Takarazuka, Japan where he lives and works. In the course of three days, he showed me all the steps it takes to assemble a Kakejiku from paper and fabric. Please give feedback or I will be unable to do better next time!

A few people have asked me how I hang the wall scrolls I have in my apartment as I do not use conventional means to hang them, however with this method you can easily hang up your wall scrolls, picture frames, or posters with ease and have them look nice! No tape, strings, or tacks will be shown and you do zero damage to your walls if you remove them, which is excellent for anyone renting! A kakejiku is a Japanese scroll painting or calligraphy mounted usually with silk fabric edges on a flexible backing, so that it can be rolled for storage. As opposed to makimono, which are meant to be unrolled laterally on a flat surface, a kakejiku is intended to be hung against a wall as part of the interior decoration of a room. It is traditionally displayed in the tokonoma alcove of a room especially designed for the display of prized objects. When displayed in a chashitsu, or teahouse for the traditional tea ceremony, the choice of the kakejiku and its complementary flower arrangement help set the spiritual mood of the ceremony.
