Smelting is a form of extractive metallurgy; its main use is to produce a base metal from its ore. This includes production of silver, iron, copper and other base metals from their ores. Smelting makes use of heat and a chemical reducing agent to decompose the ore, driving off other elements as gases or slag and leaving just the metal base behind. The reducing agent is commonly a source of carbon such as coke, or in earlier times charcoal. The carbon (or carbon monoxide derived from it) removes oxygen from the ore, leaving behind the elemental metal. The carbon is thus oxidized in two stages, producing first carbon monoxide and then carbon dioxide. As most ores are impure, it is often necessary to use flux, such as limestone, to remove the accompanying rock gangue as slag.
Plants for the electrolytic reduction of aluminium are also generally referred to as aluminium smelters.
Smelting involves more than just melting the metal out of its ore. Most ores are a chemical compound of the metal with other elements, such as oxygen (as an oxide), sulfur (as a sulfide) or carbon and oxygen together (as a carbonate). To produce the metal, these compounds have to undergo a chemical reaction. Smelting therefore consists of using suitable reducing substances that will combine with those oxidizing elements to free the metal.

Want to learn How To Smelt Gold from Black Sands ? See videos early and help them exist by clicking on the Patreon link. Thanks. https://www.patreon.com/askJeffWilliams Want to Smelt your Gold from either Placer or Hard rock deposits but can't afford a furnace......Well now there is a mini furnace that runs off of standard Propane and is very affordable. New kit can Melt and Smelt 1 to 6 Oz in 10 minutes or less. We recommend using Hank Chapman Flux and a thinner to make every pour a success. We also recommend using a cone mold for any Smelting project you may be doing. Graphite molds work great and are very affordable. During smelting event called "Dymarki swietokrzyskie" in Poland I had a great pleasure to work with the best iron smelters from Poland and Denmark. This is a very short footage and I am planning to make a longer movie "from iron ore to knife" in the future :)

Smelting of rare antique gold. The process of refining gold to remove any impurities that may be found intermixed with the noble metal is an ancient practice that has long been employed by diverse cultures. One of the earliest gold refining equipments employed by ancient metallurgists was the blast furnace – by then a rudimentary structure built with clay, stone, or roughly hewn rocks which were fed with wood or an assortment of biofuels derived from the dried fecal matter of animals. The blast furnace was used in tandem with the crucible, one of the oldest and perhaps still widely used metallurgical instruments to this day. With the methods of gold refining being perfected through the decades, even rustic objects such as clay pots and later on, cast iron equipment were employed in the que...
