New Orleans (/nuː ˈɔːrlɪnz/,/nuː ˈɔːrliənz/, /nuː ɔːrˈliːnz/, or /ˈnɔːrlənz/; French: La Nouvelle-Orléans [la nuvɛlɔʁleɑ̃]) is a major United States port and the largest city and the center of the metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The population of the city was 343,829 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The New Orleans metropolitan area (New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area) had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the United States. The New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area, a larger trading area, had a 2010 population of 1,452,502.
The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, dating to French colonial times. The city is often referred to as the "most unique" in the United States.
The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has primary responsibility for law enforcement in New Orleans, Louisiana. The department's jurisdiction covers all of Orleans Parish, while the city is divided into eight police districts.
Michael S. Harrison is the Superintendent of Police and chief commander of the NOPD.
The NOPD is divided into five bureaus, each commanded by a deputy superintendent who reports to the superintendent of police:
In the absence of the superintendent, the Deputy Superintendent of Field Operations will command the department.
A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing.
Law enforcement, however, constitutes only part of policing activity. Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order. In some societies, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these developed within the context of maintaining the class system and the protection of private property. Many police forces suffer from police corruption to a greater or lesser degree. The police force is usually a public sector service, meaning they are paid through taxes.
Mardi Gras (/ˈmɑːrdiɡrɑː/), also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three King's Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.
Related popular practices are associated with Shrovetide celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. In countries such as England, Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday, which is derived from the word shrive, meaning "confess".
Popular practices on Mardi Gras include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, debauchery, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition, as it is associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins. In many areas, the term "Mardi Gras" has come to mean the whole period of activity related to the celebratory events, beyond just the single day. In some American cities, it is now called "Mardi Gras Day".
Marcus McNeill (born November 16, 1983) is a former American college and professional football player who was an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for six seasons. He played college football for Auburn University, and was two-time All-American. The San Diego Chargers selected McNeill in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft, and he played his entire pro career for the Chargers. He was selected for the Pro Bowl twice.
McNeill was born in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Cedar Grove High School in southern DeKalb County, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta), and played both offensive and defensive line for the Cedar Grove Saints, earning SuperPrep All-American honors. He played in the Georgia-Florida High School All-Star Game as a senior. McNeill was also a standout track star finishing second in the state in the shot put.
McNeill attended Auburn University, where he played for coach Tommy Tuberville's Auburn Tigers football team from 2002 to 2005. He started 28 total games in his four years as a lineman. He blocked for future NFL running backs Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown, and allowed only one quarterback sack as a guard. Following his 2004 junior season during which he helped lead the Auburn Tigers to an undefeated 13-0 record, he was a first-team All-SEC selection, and a first-team All-American. After his senior season in 2005, he again received first-team All-SEC honors and was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American; he was later named to The Sporting News All-Decade Team.
NOPD Chief Harrison updated media today (February 14, 2018) on three shooting incidents, two of which were fatal, that occurred on February 13, and also discussed law enforcement response to these incidents.
On December 18, the newest group of NOPD recruits officially began its path to becoming NOPD officers. This 40-person class - the largest class in recent years - will train for the next 26 weeks at the NOPD Training Academy, learning what it takes to wear the NOPD's star and crescent badge and to serve the city.
The New Orleans Police Department welcomed 29 new recruits and one lateral recruit to their police academy as class number 172 today. NOPD Superintendent, Michael Harrison says the department has budgeted to bring in 150 new recruits in 2015.
Members of the NOPD joined Recruit Class 180, which graduates on November 15, along with current class 181 for the department's ceremonial Unity Run. The event signifies the outgoing class handing senior class duties to the next group of recruits. Recruit Class 182 will begin training on December 18.
New Orleans police on Wednesday (March 30) released body-worn camera footage recorded during a fatal officer-involved shooting last year on Josephine St.

The New Orleans Police Department released this video of Officer Stephen Stephano firing his weapon at suspect Darren Bridges, after Officer Marcus McNeil was shot and killed Oct. 13, 2017.
Once NOPD recruits graduate from the Training Academy, they are partnered with veteran patrol officers in the field for 16 weeks. Field Training Officers, or FTOs, are responsible for making sure new officers are prepared for anything they may encounter on the street.
Video captured on a New Orleans Police Department car's dash camera on Aug. 21, 2016, recorded what police described as an exchange of gunfire in the 7th Ward between Bernie Porche and NOPD officers that ended in Porche's death after what authorities said was a self-inflicted gunshot. Warning: Video include graphic content of a shooting.
Senior Canine Officer Harold Chambliss joined the New Orleans Police Department in the summer of 1980 and eventually made his way to a Specialized Division, the Canine Unit. As of today, he’s known as the Master Canine Trainer. Chambliss has worked with more than a dozen canine partners in protecting and serving the New Orleans Metro area.
The NOPD isn't releasing many details about the shooting that resulted in the death of Officer Marcus McNeil.

Travel video about destination New Orleans in the United States of America. A fun-filled metropolis at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is a cultural melting pot and the birth place of jazz. In 1682, the Frenchman Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it ‘La Louisiana’. A drop of love, in rain falling, lighting up my
darkness
His light becomes weaker, infinite ocean of stars...
Far away from a dream...
Now alone I wake, hidden in every corner
Blinded to my dreams, looking for my angel
Knowing not where my dreams are flying
Finding not anymore white or gold wings
Angels sing come take my ashes
Wings to dust, lost heart...
Leaving back the ways leading to the sunrise
Night takes in the lorn, await me...
Angels sing come take my ashes
Wings to dust, lost heart...
Queen of darkness, queen of night
I walk in sadness blinded by my fears
Emerald breeze caresses my tears
Angels sing come take my ashes
Wings to dust, lost heart...
Angels sing come take my ashes
Wings to dust, lost heart...
Tears of sorrow broken like crystal
Embrace cold forever,
Pale moon yearning
