Pulau Ubin, also called Ubin Island, is a small island situated in the north east of Singapore. The island housed a few thousand settlers on Pulau Ubin in the 1960s, but only about a hundred villagers live there today. It is one of the last rural areas to be found in Singapore, with an abundance of natural flora and fauna.

“Rustic”, “Nature”, “in danger”; these are popular words people use to describe Pulau Ubin, an island off Singapore that appears to be in decline. The National Heritage Board (NHB) commissioned a Cultural Mapping Project to study the island’s community and social network. The year-long project, which started in April 2015, documents the well-loved island’s living heritage through oral history accounts and lifestyles of its residents and former residents. The project took place from April 2015 to April 2016 and it tells us that Ubin is anything but in danger of being in decline.
The findings from the Cultural Mapping Project challenges this and informs us that Pulau Ubin’s kampong-centred social network is a thriving one, and has evolved to extend beyond residents living on the island, to non-residents and regular visitors. The kampung lifestyle endures on Pulau Ubin and the island’s unique cultural events like the week-long Tua Pek Kong festival continues to strengthen local bonds of friendship. The festival, which features spirit medium processions, rituals, opera, getai performances and lion dances, also attracts thousands of visitors to the island offering a platform for the renewal and expansion of the social network that spans from Ubin to Singapore Island. Visitors to Pulau Ubin are drawn into the network by their diverse connections with the island, whether through work, family-run businesses, informal apprenticeships, religious activities, or fitness and leisure. The constant flow of non-residents to the island, and their induction into the existing network, reflects an evolving kampong community.
As part of the Pulau Ubin Cultural Mapping Project, NHB has also produced this 25-minute documentary titled “Life on Ubin”, which presents the memories and experiences of current and former residents of Pulau Ubin.

A couple of my friends and I recently went camping in Pulau Ubin. And I made a movie of our trip! I guess it's something we can look back on 10..20 years down the road. Pulau Ubin is an amazing place for a short getaway within Singapore. If you like the outdoors and haven't been there yet, I highly recommend it!

Pulau Ubin
Pulau Ubin, also called Ubin Island, is a small island (10.19 km2) situated in the north east of Singapore, to the west of Pulau Tekong. Granite quarrying supported a few thousand settlers on Pulau Ubin in the 1960s, but only about a hundred villagers live there today. It is one of the last rural areas to be found in Singapore, with an abundance of natural flora and fauna. The island forms part of the Ubin–Khatib Important Bird Area (IBA), identified as such by BirdLife International because it supports significant numbers of visiting and resident birds, some of which are threatened.
Etymology
The name Pulau Ubin literally means "Granite Island" in Malay, which explains the many abandoned granite quarries there. Pulau means "island", and Ubin is said to be a Javanese term for "squared stone". To the Malays, the island is also known as Pulau Batu Ubin, or "Granite Stone Island". The rocks on the island were used to make floor tiles in the past and were called Jubin, which was then shortened to Ubin.

(7-8 July 2016) A couple of my friends and I recently went camping in Pulau Ubin. And I made a movie of our trip! I guess it's something we can look back on 10..20 years down the road. Pulau Ubin is an amazing place for a short getaway within Singapore. If you like the outdoors and haven't been there yet, I highly recommend it! “Rustic”, “Nature”, “in danger”; these are popular words people use to describe Pulau Ubin, an island off Singapore that appears to be in decline. The National Heritage Board (NHB) commissioned a Cultural Mapping Project to study the island’s community and social network. The year-long project, which started in April 2015, documents the well-loved island’s living heritage through oral history accounts and lifestyles of its residents and former residents. The project took place from April 2015 to April 2016 and it tells us that Ubin is anything but in danger of being in decline.
The findings from the Cultural Mapping Project challenges this and informs us that Pulau Ubin’s kampong-centred social network is a thriving one, and has evolved to extend beyond residents living on the island, to non-residents and regular visitors. The kampung lifestyle endures on Pulau Ubin and the island’s unique cultural events like the week-long Tua Pek Kong festival continues to strengthen local bonds of friendship. The festival, which features spirit medium processions, rituals, opera, getai performances and lion dances, also attracts thousands of visitors to the island offering a platform for the renewal and expansion of the social network that spans from Ubin to Singapore Island. Visitors to Pulau Ubin are drawn into the network by their diverse connections with the island, whether through work, family-run businesses, informal apprenticeships, religious activities, or fitness and leisure. The constant flow of non-residents to the island, and their induction into the existing network, reflects an evolving kampong community.

If you are looking for things to do in Singapore and like to be in nature then take the bumboat to Palau Ubin, rent a bike and ride around this national park. It's family friendly and has some lovely seafood restaurants. If you're on a holiday in Singapore then it makes a nice alternative from shopping. Granite quarrying supported a few thousand settlers on Pulau Ubin in the 1960s, but only about a hundred villagers live there today. It is one of the last rural areas to be found in Singapore, with an abundance of natural flora and fauna. Directions to Pulau Ubin - By http://www.thesmartlocal.com Step 1: Take the MRT to Tanah Merah MRT Station, go out through exit B on the right to the bus stop. Step 2: Take Bus 2 to Changi Village which is the last stop, this will be 15 minutes ride. Alternatively you can also take Bus 28,59,109 here if you have a direct bus. Step 3: After alighting from the bus turn left and walk all the way down to Changi Jetty. Step 4: After a 5 min walk Changi Jetty will come up on the right. Prepare exact change of $2.50 for the one way travel on the bumboat which takes about 15 minutes. You usually have to wait for a full boat before heading down.
