Apologies to those 900 viewers who found the sound was out of sync on the first posting of this film - here's a new posting - voices matching all movement!!
I hope I won't upset too many people with my comments on this film, but I simply found it - irritating - and I now remember why I didn't much like it on previous viewings. It's basically not quite one of those ‘compendium' films that were popular in the forties and early fifties - that is films in which various characters have on-going stories that concern only themselves, but in this case everyone gets involved with everyone else however incompatible they seem.
You've got Bonar Colleano, an American soldier whose only interest is birds and who shares a compartment with Michael Ward, who is also interested in birds - but of the feathered variety. Their banter is more than irritating. Then there's the infuriatingly irritating David Tomlinson, an upper-class twit who insensitively pushes into everyone else's business; Finlay Currie is pompously irritating in his resentment of everything - tight-lipped, tight pocketed and domineering; Hugh Burden is annoyingly irritating in his bumbling acceptance of being constantly trodden on by the said Finlay Currie; David Hutcheson is exasperatingly irritating in his ignorant assumption that the continental train chef has no idea how to cook; Jean Kent, herself, is just irritating with her tight, clipped voice and incredible hair concoction. Albert Lieven, Derrick de Marney and Paul Dupuis are irritating because they're not irritating - and most of the other continental actors are also not irritating. How odd!
Now by making these comments, I am in no way belittling the actors who all do extremely good jobs in their various roles (of being irritating) - the fact is that this film falls between two stools - neither thriller nor comedy - the thriller element is pretty low whereas the comedy area is too high - far too many superfluous characters being actually not very funny and padding out a film that should have been a "B" movie but with such a cast needed to be pumped up into a major attraction.
All you actually need to know is who is boarding the train, and that is shown in detail at the beginning. Kent and Lieven are after a stolen note-book which might start a war if not retrieved from the thief, Alan Wheatley, who has stolen it, and this provides the ‘thriller' element - all the other characters are basically just fillers, some good, but most indifferent, so there's nothing more needed to be explained.
Never having ridden the Orient Express, I find it odd that trains have doors designed to open outwards into the corridor - an extremely dangerous design that could cause harm to travellers when impetuous people might flee their compartments in an emotional state, or otherwise. However, this does not happen once in this film. Extraordinary! My one plus is that the train is so convincingly filmed with all shots slightly rocking, but not over done, that you might (almost) believe that it was actually filmed on a train. Back projection is, most of the time, excellent. Directed by John Paddy Carstairs the film is lucky to have train-like music provided by the prolific Benjamin Frankel.
In spite of finding so much of this film irritating, on the whole it was quite, but only quite, enjoyable. (Well, I had to say that to counteract what I said above...!) One reviewer called this unnecessary remake of "Rome Express (1932)" a "...branch-line diesel that the director insists on stopping at every country halt..." Another suggested that you might fall asleep before arriving at Trieste, and added that "the Brits speak in that ridiculous posh way that makes you cringe, and it basically helps to portray them as twerps"... I'm clearly not alone in my views, so I'm sorry to give this film the thumbs down, and in winding up, all I can say is that I'm glad I wasn't on this particular Orient Express journey...

1968, West-Australië. Down under luidt september traditioneel het begin van de lente in. Ook symbolisch, want de Aboriginals, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Australië, hebben eindelijk gelijke rechten gekregen. Al is daar in het plattelandsstadje waar tieners Ed (Xavier Samuel) en Paddy (Clarence John Ryan) wonen, weinig van te merken. Segregatie en racisme veeg je niet snel weg met een wet. Voor de blanke Ed en Aboriginal Paddy, boezemvrienden net als hun vaders, maakt het oorspronkelijk weinig uit. Ze steken stiekem een sigaretje op, staren samen naar de hemel en dromen van een heldhaftige bokscarrière. Tot de politieke en sociale realiteit hen dwingt om hun wereld en vriendschap met nieuwe ogen te bekijken. Ook de komst van de mooie Amelia (Mia Wasikowska uit Alice in Wonderland) lijkt een wig te zullen drijven tussen de onafscheidelijke vrienden...
September is een prachtig verfilmde ode aan de vriendschap tegen de achtergrond van een snel veranderende maatschappij, met knappe vertolkingen van zijn jonge cast.

John Paddy Carstairs
John Paddy Carstairs (born John Keys) (11 May 1910 in London – 12 December 1970 in London) was a British film director (1933–62) and television director (1962–64), usually of light-hearted subject matter. He was also a comic novelist and painter.
Biographhy
The son of Nelson Keys, Carstairs changed his name in order to avoid the appearance of nepotism. He directed 37 films in total. He had a long association with the character of Simon Templar (the character's creator, Leslie Charteris, dedicated the 1963 book, The Saint in the Sun to Carstairs). Aside from directing the 1939 Saint film, The Saint in London, he also directed two episodes of The Saint in the 1960s, making him the only individual (other than Charteris himself) to be connected to both the Hollywood film and British series of The Saint. Carstairs directed many British comedies including many of Norman Wisdom's films.

Apologies to those 900 viewers who found the sound was out of sync on the first posting of this film - here's a new posting - voices matching all movement!! I hope I won't upset too many people with my comments on this film, but I simply found it - irritating - and I now remember why I didn't much like it on previous viewings. It's basically not quite one of those ‘compendium' films that were popular in the forties and early fifties - that is films in which various characters have on-going stories that concern only themselves, but in this case everyone gets involved with everyone else however incompatible they seem. You've got Bonar Colleano, an American soldier whose only interest is birds and who shares a compartment with Michael Ward, who is also interested in birds - but of the feat...

1968, West-Australië. Down under luidt september traditioneel het begin van de lente in. Ook symbolisch, want de Aboriginals, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Australië, hebben eindelijk gelijke rechten gekregen. Al is daar in het plattelandsstadje waar tieners Ed (Xavier Samuel) en Paddy (Clarence John Ryan) wonen, weinig van te merken. Segregatie en racisme veeg je niet snel weg met een wet. Voor de blanke Ed en Aboriginal Paddy, boezemvrienden net als hun vaders, maakt het oorspronkelijk weinig uit. I hope I won't upset too many people with my comments on this film, but I simply found it - irritating - and I now remember why I didn't much like it on previous viewings. It's basically not quite one of those ‘compendium' films that were popular in the forties and early fifties - that is films in which various characters have on-going stories that concern only themselves, but in this case everyone gets involved with everyone else however incompatible they seem.
You've got Bonar Colleano, an American soldier whose only interest is birds and who shares a compartment with Michael Ward, who is also interested in birds - but of the feathered variety. Their banter is more than irritating. Then there's the infuriatingly irritating David Tomlinson, an upper-class twit who insensitively pushes into everyone else's business; Finlay Currie is pompously irritating in his resentment of everything - tight-lipped, tight pocketed and domineering; Hugh Burden is annoyingly irritating in his bumbling acceptance of being constantly trodden on by the said Finlay Currie; David Hutcheson is exasperatingly irritating in his ignorant assumption that the continental train chef has no idea how to cook; Jean Kent, herself, is just irritating with her tight, clipped voice and incredible hair concoction. Albert Lieven, Derrick de Marney and Paul Dupuis are irritating because they're not irritating - and most of the other continental actors are also not irritating. How odd!
Now by making these comments, I am in no way belittling the actors who all do extremely good jobs in their various roles (of being irritating) - the fact is that this film falls between two stools - neither thriller nor comedy - the thriller element is pretty low whereas the comedy area is too high - far too many superfluous characters being actually not very funny and padding out a film that should have been a "B" movie but with such a cast needed to be pumped up into a major attraction.
All you actually need to know is who is boarding the train, and that is shown in detail at the beginning. Kent and Lieven are after a stolen note-book which might start a war if not retrieved from the thief, Alan Wheatley, who has stolen it, and this provides the ‘thriller' element - all the other characters are basically just fillers, some good, but most indifferent, so there's nothing more needed to be explained.
Never having ridden the Orient Express, I find it odd that trains have doors designed to open outwards into the corridor - an extremely dangerous design that could cause harm to travellers when impetuous people might flee their compartments in an emotional state, or otherwise. However, this does not happen once in this film. Extraordinary! My one plus is that the train is so convincingly filmed with all shots slightly rocking, but not over done, that you might (almost) believe that it was actually filmed on a train. Back projection is, most of the time, excellent. Directed by John Paddy Carstairs the film is lucky to have train-like music provided by the prolific Benjamin Frankel.
In spite of finding so much of this film irritating, on the whole it was quite, but only quite, enjoyable. (Well, I had to say that to counteract what I said above...!) One reviewer called this unnecessary remake of "Rome Express (1932)" a "...branch-line diesel that the director insists on stopping at every country halt..." Another suggested that you might fall asleep before arriving at Trieste, and added that "the Brits speak in that ridiculous posh way that makes you cringe, and it basically helps to portray them as twerps"... I'm clearly not alone in my views, so I'm sorry to give this film the thumbs down, and in winding up, all I can say is that I'm glad I wasn't on this particular Orient Express journey...

Albert Lieven, Derrick de Marney and Paul Dupuis are irritating because they're not irritating - and most of the other continental actors are also not irritating. How odd!
Now by making these comments, I am in no way belittling the actors who all do extremely good jobs in their various roles (of being irritating) - the fact is that this film falls between two stools - neither thriller nor comedy - the thriller element is pretty low whereas the comedy area is too high - far too many superfluous characters being actually not very funny and padding out a film that should have been a "B" movie but with such a cast needed to be pumped up into a major attraction.
All you actually need to know is who is boarding the train, and that is shown in detail at the beginning. Kent and Lieven are after a stolen note-book which might start a war if not retrieved from the thief, Alan Wheatley, who has stolen it, and this provides the ‘thriller' element - all the other characters are basically just fillers, some good, but most indifferent, so there's nothing more needed to be explained.
Never having ridden the Orient Express, I find it odd that trains have doors designed to open outwards into the corridor - an extremely dangerous design that could cause harm to travellers when impetuous people might flee their compartments in an emotional state, or otherwise. However, this does not happen once in this film. Extraordinary! My one plus is that the train is so convincingly filmed with all shots slightly rocking, but not over done, that you might (almost) believe that it was actually filmed on a train. Back projection is, most of the time, excellent. Directed by John Paddy Carstairs the film is lucky to have train-like music provided by the prolific Benjamin Frankel.
In spite of finding so much of this film irritating, on the whole it was quite, but only quite, enjoyable. (Well, I had to say that to counteract what I said above...!) One reviewer called this unnecessary remake of "Rome Express (1932)" a "...branch-line diesel that the director insists on stopping at every country halt..." Another suggested that you might fall asleep before arriving at Trieste, and added that "the Brits speak in that ridiculous posh way that makes you cringe, and it basically helps to portray them as twerps"... I'm clearly not alone in my views, so I'm sorry to give this film the thumbs down, and in winding up, all I can say is that I'm glad I wasn't on this particular Orient Express journey...

Al is daar in het plattelandsstadje waar tieners Ed (Xavier Samuel) en Paddy (Clarence John Ryan) wonen, weinig van te merken. Segregatie en racisme veeg je niet snel weg met een wet. Voor de blanke Ed en Aboriginal Paddy, boezemvrienden net als hun vaders, maakt het oorspronkelijk weinig uit. Ze steken stiekem een sigaretje op, staren samen naar de hemel en dromen van een heldhaftige bokscarrière. Tot de politieke en sociale realiteit hen dwingt om hun wereld en vriendschap met nieuwe ogen te bekijken. Apologies to those 900 viewers who found the sound was out of sync on the first posting of this film - here's a new posting - voices matching all movement!! I hope I won't upset too many people with my comments on this film, but I simply found it - irritating - and I now remember why I didn't much like it on previous viewings. It's basically not quite one of those ‘compendium' films that were popular in the forties and early fifties - that is films in which various characters have on-going stories that concern only themselves, but in this case everyone gets involved with everyone else however incompatible they seem. You've got Bonar Colleano, an American soldier whose only interest is birds and who shares a compartment with Michael Ward, who is also interested in birds - but of the feat...

Apologies to those 900 viewers who found the sound was out of sync on the first posting of this film - here's a new posting - voices matching all movement!!
I hope I won't upset too many people with my comments on this film, but I simply found it - irritating - and I now remember why I didn't much like it on previous viewings. It's basically not quite one of those ‘compendium' films that were popular in the forties and early fifties - that is films in which various characters have on-going stories that concern only themselves, but in this case everyone gets involved with everyone else however incompatible they seem.
You've got Bonar Colleano, an American soldier whose only interest is birds and who shares a compartment with Michael Ward, who is also interested in birds - but of the feathered variety. Their banter is more than irritating. Then there's the infuriatingly irritating David Tomlinson, an upper-class twit who insensitively pushes into everyone else's business; Finlay Currie is pompously irritating in his resentment of everything - tight-lipped, tight pocketed and domineering; Hugh Burden is annoyingly irritating in his bumbling acceptance of being constantly trodden on by the said Finlay Currie; David Hutcheson is exasperatingly irritating in his ignorant assumption that the continental train chef has no idea how to cook; Jean Kent, herself, is just irritating with her tight, clipped voice and incredible hair concoction. Albert Lieven, Derrick de Marney and Paul Dupuis are irritating because they're not irritating - and most of the other continental actors are also not irritating. How odd!
Now by making these comments, I am in no way belittling the actors who all do extremely good jobs in their various roles (of being irritating) - the fact is that this film falls between two stools - neither thriller nor comedy - the thriller element is pretty low whereas the comedy area is too high - far too many superfluous characters being actually not very funny and padding out a film that should have been a "B" movie but with such a cast needed to be pumped up into a major attraction.
All you actually need to know is who is boarding the train, and that is shown in detail at the beginning. Kent and Lieven are after a stolen note-book which might start a war if not retrieved from the thief, Alan Wheatley, who has stolen it, and this provides the ‘thriller' element - all the other characters are basically just fillers, some good, but most indifferent, so there's nothing more needed to be explained.
Never having ridden the Orient Express, I find it odd that trains have doors designed to open outwards into the corridor - an extremely dangerous design that could cause harm to travellers when impetuous people might flee their compartments in an emotional state, or otherwise. However, this does not happen once in this film. Extraordinary! My one plus is that the train is so convincingly filmed with all shots slightly rocking, but not over done, that you might (almost) believe that it was actually filmed on a train. Back projection is, most of the time, excellent. Directed by John Paddy Carstairs the film is lucky to have train-like music provided by the prolific Benjamin Frankel.
In spite of finding so much of this film irritating, on the whole it was quite, but only quite, enjoyable. (Well, I had to say that to counteract what I said above...!) One reviewer called this unnecessary remake of "Rome Express (1932)" a "...branch-line diesel that the director insists on stopping at every country halt..." Another suggested that you might fall asleep before arriving at Trieste, and added that "the Brits speak in that ridiculous posh way that makes you cringe, and it basically helps to portray them as twerps"... I'm clearly not alone in my views, so I'm sorry to give this film the thumbs down, and in winding up, all I can say is that I'm glad I wasn't on this particular Orient Express journey...

Ook symbolisch, want de Aboriginals, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Australië, hebben eindelijk gelijke rechten gekregen. Al is daar in het plattelandsstadje waar tieners Ed (Xavier Samuel) en Paddy (Clarence John Ryan) wonen, weinig van te merken. Segregatie en racisme veeg je niet snel weg met een wet. Voor de blanke Ed en Aboriginal Paddy, boezemvrienden net als hun vaders, maakt het oorspronkelijk weinig uit. Ze steken stiekem een sigaretje op, staren samen naar de hemel en dromen van een heldhaftige bokscarrière. Tot de politieke en sociale realiteit hen dwingt om hun wereld en vriendschap met nieuwe ogen te bekijken. Ook de komst van de mooie Amelia (Mia Wasikowska uit Alice in Wonderland) lijkt een wig te zullen drijven tussen de onafscheidelijke vrienden...
September is een prachtig verfilmde ode aan de vriendschap tegen de achtergrond van een snel veranderende maatschappij, met knappe vertolkingen van zijn jonge cast.

This film from 1950 (which an d might be described as a comedy-drama - or perhaps a drama-comedy) hasn't been seen for many a year and although it's annoyingly out of focus all the way through, hopefully that won't spoil the fluffy, inconsequential but ultimately enjoyable movie directed by John Paddy Carstairs. Anne Crawford, an actress who died far too soon (1920–1956), has a leading role as the psychiatrist wife of general practitioner Cecil Parker (always good money's worth if not your actual handsome leading man), who's son draws naughty images on the surgery wall and the basis of this light-hearted film's enjoyment comes from the parent's two conflicting ideas on child-rearing. You've got Bonar Colleano, an American soldier whose only interest is birds and who shares a compartment with Michael Ward, who is also interested in birds - but of the feathered variety. Their banter is more than irritating. Then there's the infuriatingly irritating David Tomlinson, an upper-class twit who insensitively pushes into everyone else's business; Finlay Currie is pompously irritating in his resentment of everything - tight-lipped, tight pocketed and domineering; Hugh Burden is annoyingly irritating in his bumbling acceptance of being constantly trodden on by the said Finlay Currie; David Hutcheson is exasperatingly irritating in his ignorant assumption that the continental train chef has no idea how to cook; Jean Kent, herself, is just irritating with her tight, clipped voice and incredible hair concoction. Albert Lieven, Derrick de Marney and Paul Dupuis are irritating because they're not irritating - and most of the other continental actors are also not irritating. How odd!
Now by making these comments, I am in no way belittling the actors who all do extremely good jobs in their various roles (of being irritating) - the fact is that this film falls between two stools - neither thriller nor comedy - the thriller element is pretty low whereas the comedy area is too high - far too many superfluous characters being actually not very funny and padding out a film that should have been a "B" movie but with such a cast needed to be pumped up into a major attraction.
All you actually need to know is who is boarding the train, and that is shown in detail at the beginning. Kent and Lieven are after a stolen note-book which might start a war if not retrieved from the thief, Alan Wheatley, who has stolen it, and this provides the ‘thriller' element - all the other characters are basically just fillers, some good, but most indifferent, so there's nothing more needed to be explained.
Never having ridden the Orient Express, I find it odd that trains have doors designed to open outwards into the corridor - an extremely dangerous design that could cause harm to travellers when impetuous people might flee their compartments in an emotional state, or otherwise. However, this does not happen once in this film. Extraordinary! My one plus is that the train is so convincingly filmed with all shots slightly rocking, but not over done, that you might (almost) believe that it was actually filmed on a train. Back projection is, most of the time, excellent. Directed by John Paddy Carstairs the film is lucky to have train-like music provided by the prolific Benjamin Frankel.

I hope I won't upset too many people with my comments on this film, but I simply found it - irritating - and I now remember why I didn't much like it on previous viewings. It's basically not quite one of those ‘compendium' films that were popular in the forties and early fifties - that is films in which various characters have on-going stories that concern only themselves, but in this case everyone gets involved with everyone else however incompatible they seem.

This film from 1950 (which an d might be described as a comedy-drama - or perhaps a drama-comedy) hasn't been seen for many a year and although it's annoyingly out of focus all the way through, hopefully that won't spoil the fluffy, inconsequential but ultimately enjoyable movie directed by John Paddy Carstairs. Anne Crawford, an actress who died far too soon (1920–1956), has a leading role as the psychiatrist wife of general practitioner Cecil Parker (always good money's worth if not your actual handsome leading man), who's son draws naughty images on the surgery wall and the basis of this light-hearted film's enjoyment comes from the parent's two conflicting ideas on child-rearing. The differences of opinion flare up into a parting of the ways for the parents of Tony, who's horse-drawings presumably include a large appendage, though sadly we never get to see them. This leads to an accidental trip to Dieppe by Tony's mother with her sister's (Barbara Murray) fiancée (Derek Bond) which of course, precipitate's all sorts of ‘French Farce' problems. All is suitably resolved by the end! There are nice performances all round, with lovely Dandy Nichols having a larger than usual role, but once again as a ‘servant'! Barbara Everest gives an unbelievably stagey performance as Crawford's thoroughly irritating, organising, domineering mother, making one wonder whether upper-middle-class life was ever really like this - a wonderful moment when she says "... Mother knows best..." - as if! An interesting sociological habit of the period is seen when Crawford puts a scarf over her head to protect her hair when taking off a dress - does that still happen? Mervyn Johns plays Crawford's father, and Edward Rigby is excellent as her Grandfather. The music is by little-known Bretton Byrd, who also composed music for Phyllis Calvert's "The Root of All Evil", Margaret Lockwood's "The White Unicorn" (1947) and "My Sister and I" (1948).
