A St. Paul man is accused of attempting to kill the father of his girlfriend’s child.

Brion Quantrial Overton, 22, was charged Thursday with one count of second-degree attempted murder and a second count of being involved in a drive-by-shooting, according to the criminal complaint filed against him in Ramsey County District Court.

A 24-year-old man was driving by the home of his child’s mother Monday in St. Paul when he told police he saw Overton walk toward him with a gun after exiting a white sedan, court documents say.

About a half-hour later, the man was driving on Fourth Street East near Mendota Street when he reportedly saw the white sedan again. He told officers he saw Overton climb out of the vehicle’s passenger side and walk toward him, again wielding a gun. This time, he said he fired, the complaint said.

Both of the victim’s front driver and passenger side windows shattered as he fled the scene. The man was injured by the flying glass shards, but was not hit by a bullet.

On Wednesday, officers reportedly saw Overton leave his home with a backpack slung over his shoulder as he made his way to a store. He set the backpack down before going inside the store and police found a handgun inside it, court documents say.

A round found inside the firearm matched one uncovered at the scene of the shooting, the complaint said.

In an interview with police, Overton recalled the shooting but said it was the passenger in the other car that fired at him, not the other way around, court documents say. He also denied possessing a gun.

Overton was convicted of unlawfully possessing a pistol in 2015. He was acquitted of murder charges in Hennepin County the same year, authorities say.

No attorney was listed for him on court records.
