The Damrak is a partly filled in canal at the centre of Amsterdam, between Amsterdam Centraal railway station and Dam Square, running north-south. It is the main street where people arriving at the station enter the centre of Amsterdam. Also it is one of the two GVB tram routes from the station into the centre, with lines 4, 9, 16, 24, and 25 running down it.
It is also on the route of the North/South Line (Amsterdam metro line) being constructed between the existing metro station at Centraal Station and the new Rokin station.
Because of the former stock exchange building, the monumental Beurs van Berlage (now used for other purposes), and several other buildings related to financial activities erected there in the early 20th century, the term "Damrak" has come to be a synonym for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange in the same way "Wall Street" is synonymous with the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
The street was located on a rak (reach), a straight part of the Amstel river near a dam; hence the name.

Sauna Damrak gevestigd tegenover de Beurs aan het Damrak 54 is op 22 februari 2015 gesloten. Op deze laatste dag van haar bestaan bezocht Menne Vellinga voor MVS Gaystation deze oude sauna die vooral erg in trek was bij mannen. De huiskamersfeer sprak vele bezoekers aan, zo blijkt uit de reacties van een enkeling die voor deze keer wel in beeld wilden komen. Drijvende kracht was Laurens, die 25 jaar als gastheer heeft opgetreden.

We took a long walk up Damrak street headed towards Central Station. We were looking for a fish n chips place to eat (ironically, closed down some time ago, henceforth, never found...). Alot to look at and touristy but still amazingly beautiful.

Omstanders filmen aanhouding op het Damrak.

Agenten van het AT hebben donderdagavond op het Damrak in Amsterdam met getrokken pistolen een groep mannen in een auto aangehouden.
De arrestatie gebeurde ter hoogte voor de Beurs van Berlage. De politie had even daarvoor een tip gekregen vanaf het Leidseplein. Daar had iemand gezien dat de groep een vuurwapen bij zich had, schrijft AT5. Toen agenten de auto kort daarop over het Damrak zagen rijden, namen ze dan ook geen risico en werden de mannen met getrokken pistolen gesommeerd uit te stappen.
De vier zijn aangehouden. Het wapen dat ze bij zich hadden was waarschijnlijk nep, zegt een woordvoerder.

On our 1st full day in Amsterdam, we began our stroll in the Damrak Avenue area around Station. A very bustling and vibrant area, with one of the largest canals in the area. A great way to start our walking tours of this fascinating city.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam (English /ˈæmstərdæm/ or /ˌæmstərˈdæm/;Dutch: [ɑmstərˈdɑm]) is the capital city and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Dam Square
Dam Square or Dam (Dutch pronunciation: [dɑm]) is a town square in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. Its notable buildings and frequent events make it one of the most well-known and important locations in the city and the country.
Location and description
Dam Square lies in the historical center of Amsterdam, approximately 750 meters south of the main transportation hub, Centraal Station, at the original location of the dam in the river Amstel. It is roughly rectangular in shape, stretching about 200 meters from west to east and about 100 meters from north to south. It links the streets Damrak and Rokin, which run along the original course of the Amstel River from Centraal Station to Muntplein (Mint Square) and the Munttoren (Mint Tower). The Dam also marks the endpoint of the other well-traveled streets Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat and Damstraat. A short distance beyond the northeast corner lies the main red-light district: de Wallen.
On the west end of the square is the neoclassical Royal Palace, which served as the city hall from 1655 until its conversion to a royal residence in 1808. Beside it are the 15th-century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. The National Monument, a white stone pillar designed by J.J.P. Oud and erected in 1956 to memorialize the victims of World War II, dominates the opposite side of the square. Also overlooking the plaza are the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and the upscale department store De Bijenkorf. These various attractions have turned the Dam into a tourist zone.

Central station
Central station is a common name for a railway station, for example Central railway station (London) and Melbourne Central. As well as being used for centrally located stations (such as the former Croydon Central station), "Central" often appears in names of stations that were once served by railway companies which used Central as part of their name—for example Leicester Central railway station was owned by the Great Central Railway, and Grand Central Station in New York City was part of the New York Central Railroad.
When translating foreign texts into English, "Central station" sometimes replaces the name of stations in the non-English speaking world where the literal meaning of the station's name is central station or main station. The Damrak is a partly filled in canal at the centre of Amsterdam, between Amsterdam Centraal railway station and Dam Square, running north-south. It is the main street where people arriving at the station enter the centre of Amsterdam. Also it is one of the two GVB tram routes from the station into the centre, with lines 4, 9, 16, 24, and 25 running down it. It is also on the route of the North/South Line (Amsterdam metro line) being constructed between the existing metro station at Centraal Station and the new Rokin station. Because of the former stock exchange building, the monumental Beurs van Berlage (now used for other purposes), and several other buildings related to financial activities erected there in the early 20th century, the term "Damrak" has come to be a synonym for the Am...

SAUNA DAMRAK 1974 - 2015
Sauna Damrak gevestigd tegenover de Beurs aan het Damrak 54 is op 22 februari 2015 gesloten. Op deze laatste dag van haar bestaan bezocht Menne Vellinga voor MVS Gaystation deze oude sauna die vooral erg in trek was bij mannen. De huiskamersfeer sprak vele bezoekers aan, zo blijkt uit de reacties van een enkeling die voor deze keer wel in beeld wilden komen. Drijvende kracht was Laurens, die 25 jaar als gastheer heeft opgetreden.

Omstanders filmen aanhouding op het Damrak. AMSTERDAM - Agenten van het AT hebben donderdagavond op het Damrak in Amsterdam met getrokken pistolen een groep mannen in een auto aangehouden. De arrestatie gebeurde ter hoogte voor de Beurs van Berlage. De politie had even daarvoor een tip gekregen vanaf het Leidseplein. Daar had iemand gezien dat de groep een vuurwapen bij zich had, schrijft AT5. Toen agenten de auto kort daarop over het Damrak zagen rijden, namen ze dan ook geen risico en werden de mannen met getrokken pistolen gesommeerd uit te stappen. De vier zijn aangehouden. Several companies offer private tours by car, van, or mini bus for groups of up to 8 people. Bike tours are also available at a more affordable price, and offer a more authentic Dutch experience.
Other companies offer canal cruises, usually lasting from one to two hours. Departures from: Prins Hendrikkade opposite Centraal Station; quayside Damrak; Rokin near Spui; Stadhouderskade 25 near Leidseplein.
The Canal Bus [25]. Runs three fixed routes, stopping near major attractions (Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank's House, etc.). You can get on or off as often as you like, but it is expensive, €20 per person per 24 hr. The first boats start between 9.15AM. and 10.45AM. depending on which stop you get on. The last boats start dropping off at around 7 p.m.
Lovers Canal Cruise [26] start opposite the Rijksmuseum. It is €15 per person, but you cannot get on and off. The cruise is about 1 hr 30 min.
Amsterdam Boat Guide [27] Local company offering private boat tours in classic boats. Canal cruises, dinner cruises etc.
Amsterdam Jewel Cruises [28] offers an evening dinner cruise. It is the only classic boat offering a private table for a romantic dinner cruise. A la carte dining, but not cheap! The cruise starts at 7.30 pm and lasts just under three hours.
You can cruise the canals yourself, without the commentary with a canal bike (pedal boat) or rented boat.
Boaty Rental Boats [29]. Boaty offers rental boats (max. 6 persons) for your own private tour: decide where to go yourself or choose one of Boaty's free canal routes. These rental boats are electrically driven which means they are silent and free of exhaust fumes. They are charged with renewable energy every night so you can enjoy your time on the water as long as you like. The boats are very stable, unsinkable and of course the rental is accompanied by free life vests in different sizes.
Canal Company [30]. Has four rental locations; two-seater canal bikes cost €8 per person per hour.
Venetian Gondola [31]. You can also rent a gondola, hand made by an Amsterdam girl who traveled to Venice to learn the craft and build her own Gondola which she brought back to Amsterdam.

Welcome to Amsterdam. Ten top things to do in Amsterdam.
First up is the Rijksmuseum. There’s a vast array of exhibitions here but the museum is most famous for its collection of Rembrandt paintings. And it’s here that you can see his masterpiece, The Night Watch.
The Rijksmuseum is really popular and the queues can get really long. Book an e-ticket before you arrive to avoid queuing at the ticket desk.
A great thing to do when you first arrive is to take a canal tour. We booked with Gray Line, which you can find on Damrak, near Amsterdam Centraal. The tour lasts for an hour and takes you all around the city.
Live like a local and hire a bike for the day. We recommend Star Bikes; they provided us with a friendly service and the bikes cost just €9 for 24 hours.
Anne Frank’s House is on Prisengracht, in central Amsterdam.No cameras are allowed to be used inside as the museum believes that photography disturbs the emotional experience of the visit. And, as for tickets, from 9:30am - 3:30pm, entry is only available to those who have booked an online time slot. You can buy tickets on the gate, between 3:30pm and closing, but by then the queue will have gotten really big, so we recommend booking it online first.
The tulip fields at Keukenhof are only open for eight weeks a year, so if you’re in Amsterdam between late March and mid-May, they’re an absolute must-visit. It’s worth it just for the photos. Keukenhof has really gone out of its way to make it perfect for younger kids too. There’s loads for the whole family to do here. From parks and playgrounds to a petting zoo, Keukenhof caters for everyone.
Another idea for a day trip is to head to the Zaanse Schans windmills, there’s loads to do here. Take a walk or a bike ride along the canals. Have a look around the small cheese farm, see traditional clog-making or head inside the windmills themselves. We’re inside the Schans Molen, it’s the last remaining paint windmill in the world. To get in, it costs €4 for an adult and €2 for a child.
Next we’re heading back into the city centre, to the Vincent Van Gogh museum. Born in 1853, Van Gogh was one of the leaders in the post-impressionist movement. And it’s here in this museum that you’ll find the largest collection of his artworks, including the famous Sunflowers. The museum is open every day from 9am and closing times vary by season. The busiest times are in the middle of the day, between 11am and 3pm, so visit outside of these areas for the best experience. Just like other museums in Amsterdam, we recommend booking your tickets online ahead of your visit.
Tucked away down Pijlsteeg, just off Dam Square, is Wynand Fockink, a traditional jenever tasting tavern. You can try from over seventy different varieties and you’re encouraged to try the traditional way, hands-free, from a tulip-shaped glass.
Stroopwafels are Dutch waffles made from two layers of baked dough, with a layer of syrup in the middle. And the best place to try them is at the Albert Cuypmarkt. The market is mainly for locals but it’s a fascinating place to visit and its surrounding area of De Pijp is the best place in the city to go out for food.
And, finally, what visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to the Red Light District? Known locally as De Wallen, it’s home to coffee shops, legalised prostitution, peep shows, sex shops and just about anything in between. Millions of tourists flock here every year and, even if you’re not into what the Red Light District has to offer, we still recommend doing what we did and booking yourself onto a walking tour. We booked with AmsterdamRedLightDistrictTour.com. They were friendly and informative, talking us through some crazy places, many of which we weren’t even allowed to film.

Welcome to Amsterdam. Ten top things to do in Amsterdam.
First up is the Rijksmuseum. There’s a vast array of exhibitions here but the museum is most famous for its collection of Rembrandt paintings. And it’s here that you can see his masterpiece, The Night Watch.
The Rijksmuseum is really popular and the queues can get really long. Book an e-ticket before you arrive to avoid queuing at the ticket desk.
A great thing to do when you first arrive is to take a canal tour. We booked with Gray Line, which you can find on Damrak, near Amsterdam Centraal. The tour lasts for an hour and takes you all around the city.
Live like a local and hire a bike for the day. We recommend Star Bikes; they provided us with a friendly service and the bikes cost just €9 for 24 hours.
Anne Frank’s House is on Prisengracht, in central Amsterdam.No cameras are allowed to be used inside as the museum believes that photography disturbs the emotional experience of the visit. And, as for tickets, from 9:30am - 3:30pm, entry is only available to those who have booked an online time slot. You can buy tickets on the gate, between 3:30pm and closing, but by then the queue will have gotten really big, so we recommend booking it online first.
The tulip fields at Keukenhof are only open for eight weeks a year, so if you’re in Amsterdam between late March and mid-May, they’re an absolute must-visit. It’s worth it just for the photos. Keukenhof has really gone out of its way to make it perfect for younger kids too. There’s loads for the whole family to do here. From parks and playgrounds to a petting zoo, Keukenhof caters for everyone.
Another idea for a day trip is to head to the Zaanse Schans windmills, there’s loads to do here. Take a walk or a bike ride along the canals. Have a look around the small cheese farm, see traditional clog-making or head inside the windmills themselves. We’re inside the Schans Molen, it’s the last remaining paint windmill in the world. To get in, it costs €4 for an adult and €2 for a child.
Next we’re heading back into the city centre, to the Vincent Van Gogh museum. Born in 1853, Van Gogh was one of the leaders in the post-impressionist movement. And it’s here in this museum that you’ll find the largest collection of his artworks, including the famous Sunflowers. The museum is open every day from 9am and closing times vary by season. The busiest times are in the middle of the day, between 11am and 3pm, so visit outside of these areas for the best experience. Just like other museums in Amsterdam, we recommend booking your tickets online ahead of your visit.
Tucked away down Pijlsteeg, just off Dam Square, is Wynand Fockink, a traditional jenever tasting tavern. You can try from over seventy different varieties and you’re encouraged to try the traditional way, hands-free, from a tulip-shaped glass.
Stroopwafels are Dutch waffles made from two layers of baked dough, with a layer of syrup in the middle. And the best place to try them is at the Albert Cuypmarkt. The market is mainly for locals but it’s a fascinating place to visit and its surrounding area of De Pijp is the best place in the city to go out for food.
And, finally, what visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to the Red Light District? Known locally as De Wallen, it’s home to coffee shops, legalised prostitution, peep shows, sex shops and just about anything in between. Millions of tourists flock here every year and, even if you’re not into what the Red Light District has to offer, we still recommend doing what we did and booking yourself onto a walking tour. We booked with AmsterdamRedLightDistrictTour.com. They were friendly and informative, talking us through some crazy places, many of which we weren’t even allowed to film.

This is a city that’s defined by its museums and tulips. Throw in the beautiful windmills, clogs and cheese and you’re all set for a Dutch experience.
