Commodore customer looks to make $100,000 in a week

The last drive in Australia's HSV GTSR W1
A day in HSV's GTSR W1 will be one to remember.

Holden customers looking to leverage emotion surrounding the manufacturer’s imminent factory closure are cashing in on the appeal of Australia’s last muscle cars.

HSV’s 474kW GTSR W1 is the ultimate rendition of the Australian V8 sedan, packing a supercharged engine along with world-class suspension and tyres that make it the most potent Commodore sold for the road.

Plenty of potential customers missed out on the sold-out sedan, which was originally listed for $169,990 plus on-road costs – almost $200,000 by the time you get it home.

A handful of customers have listed cars for sale online for prices starting from $250,000, running to “offers over $300,000” for cars yet to be built or delivered to customers.

Manheim Australia will be the first auction house to put a GTSR W1 under the hammer when a black example crosses the block on August 10.

Manheim auctioneer Aaron Lofts says the car is the 35th example to be built by HSV, and the first to be publicly available since the cars were originally offered to loyal HSV customers.

“We have a customer who got theirs pretty early in the piece - most people haven't got theirs yet,” Lofts says.

“They received the car on Tuesday through their dealership. We received it the day after. “All the delivery plastics are on the car, they’ll stay on there for the new owner.”

Lofts estimates that the car will sell for $280,000 to $320,000, landing the lucky owner a $100,000 profit in just over a week.

“I think the high $200,000-range is fair and reasonable,” Lofts says.

“I know dealers who paid $200,000 to get on a list to get hold of the car. It might sell for more than $300,000.”
