EVENTS MANAGER

The Henry Jackson Society (HJS) – a fast-growing and dynamic international relations focused Think Tank (www.henryjacksonsociety.org) – is looking to fill the position of Events Manager.

This is a proactive role that will require you to manage and broaden our events programme both within Parliament and other prestigious venues, including abroad when necessary. The successful candidate will ensure smooth running of all events in run in Parliament and other prestigious venues, including abroad when necessary. This position is an opportunity for a well-rounded individual to contribute to one of the best regarded events schedules in Westminster and to develop relationships with international and domestic policy figures.

Main Duties:

  • Work with the Research Team to target new events.
  • Ensure attendance of appropriate stakeholders at events.
  • Identifying speakers for the parliamentary programme, and approaching them, confirming them, securing host MPs/peers and acting as the main point of contact for the organisation of each event.
  • Publicising events appropriately and ensuring that traditional and social media avenues are used to their full potential to maximise the quality and quantity of attendees.
  • Attend all events and ensuring that they proceed smoothly (e.g. greeting speaker and host, keeping meeting to time, dealing with crowd control etc.).
  • Manage HJS seminars, conferences and briefings, as well as those of HJS associated projects, including travel abroad where appropriate.
  • Provide new event ideas, to be discussed with colleagues and the Executive Director.
  • Work with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure events are budgeted properly and that costs are kept to a minimum.
  • Ensure that events are staffed appropriately, security requirements are assessed and all follow-up administration is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain an event provider database that can act as a source of reference for future events (e.g. venue charges, menu options, equipment providers etc.).
  • Look after VIP attendees at events.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker who is highly motivated, energetic and understands the pivotal role of communications in the strategic success of an organisation. They must have:

  • Previous experience in an administrative and/or events management role;
  • Confident writing and speaking skills;
  • Experience with use of databases;
  • Understanding of Parliament and parliamentary processes, desirable;
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office packages;
  • Accurate data entry skills;
  • Team-working experience;
  • Excellent time management and project management skills;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to multi-task;
  • Pro-active and self-motivated with a drive to develop and willingness to undertake further training if necessary;
  • Willingness to work outside of normal working hours without time of in lieu;
  • Sympathy with our ideals expected.

COMMUNICATIONS AND POLICY OFFICER 

The Henry Jackson Society (HJS) – a fast-growing and dynamic international relations focused Think Tank (www.henryjacksonsociety.org) – is looking to fill the position of Communications and Policy Officer.

The Communications and Policy Officer is a key member of the Communications and Policy Team. Working closely with both the Parliamentary Affairs Manager and the Communications Director, the C&P Officer will divide their time equally between communications and parliamentary engagement activities.

The C&P Officer will help improve the external communications and parliamentary relations for The Henry Jackson Society, working with management and research teams, and within the communications and policy team, to conceive ideas, build engagement plans and execute communication through various media channels.

This role will require a proactive and ambitious approach, able to marry the detail-oriented and fast-paced nature of the job in building awareness, interest and support for HJS, its initiatives, projects and policies. Serving as one of the organisation’s media point-people and external representatives, you will play a major part in identifying and exploiting communications and policy education opportunities, working with management and the research team in producing material, managing the media outreach and assisting colleagues with media and parliamentary related tasks.

The hybrid nature of this position means that it will suit candidates with parliamentary or political backgrounds, and who have been engaged in campaigning or media work in the past. Social media communication experience is particularly highly valued. Design and editing skills would be a plus.

Main Duties

  • To assist with the management of HJS’s media and external communication, monitoring media in line with HJS’s remit, keeping colleagues informed of stories relevant to HJS, writing press releases and website copy, identifying new media channels and helping HJS to establish thought leadership in its areas of work.
  • To support the Parliamentary Affairs Manager in assisting with parliamentary and political outreach to work with those in this sphere who can contribute to HJS’s work.
  • Take the lead in ensuring HJS’ databases are up to date and effective.
  • To assist the Parliamentary Manager in ensuring information about HJS research issues of concern in the political domain is accurate and relevant, while ensuring the information is stored in accordance with data protection laws.
  • To assist with the management and extension of HJS’s network of influencers and media contacts, developing a structured approach to acquiring new and relevant media relationships, maintaining a database of journalists and managing key processes such as the submission of op-eds, briefing invitations, etc.  To work with colleagues in identifying key publication opportunities for HJS issues within the policy domain and work with policy specialists to ensure such opportunities are maximised.
  • To work with the events team to develop and expand HJS’s presence at events and conferences, in line with the wider communications strategy.
  • To ensure all events and time-sensitive work is covered by way of social media to ensure no opportunity to educate about HJS’s work is missed.
  • To deliver, and where necessary create, communications templates requiring elements of design, formatting and management of brand standards and consistency.
  • To assist, where appropriate, with the design and publication of HJS printed and published content.
  • To maintain and develop the websites, social media, media outreach and marketing components – as appropriate – of HJS and its projects.
  • To lead on design and video/audio editing within the organisation, producing a range of marketing material and publications using your graphic design and editing skills.
  • To cover for the Communications Director and Parliamentary Affairs Manager when absent and appropriate.

Person specification

  • Minimum 1 years’ relevant parliamentary/political/media/PR/communications experience in a full time capacity
  • Confident writing skills, particularly in the context of press releases and newsletters;
  • Demonstrable evidence of ability to cold call and deliver results;
  • Knowledge and practical usage of social media in a professional context a must;
  • A wide-ranging interest in areas of our work;
  • Team-working experience;
  • Excellent time management and project management skills;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to multi-task;

  • Audio and video editing experience would be helpful, but not essential;

HEAD OF EVENTS AND SPONSORSHIP

The Henry Jackson Society (HJS) – a fast-growing and dynamic international relations focused Think Tank (www.henryjacksonsociety.org) – is looking to fill the position of Head of Events and Sponsorship.

 This is an exciting opportunity to create your own events programme and continually identify and act on new opportunities for corporate and sponsored engagement as a means of supporting our broader work. This proactive role requires you to develop new revenue streams through content driven events, nationally and internationally, based around our areas of research. You will conceptualise events programmes and sponsorships, and deliver on these in both revenue and content.

In conjunction with the Events Manager, you will also broaden our existing events programme. You will lead and develop many relationships that the Henry Jackson Society needs to engage with in order to carry out and fulfil its potential as a leading international affairs think tank.

Finally,  in consultation with colleagues, you will oversee the events programme, and ensure that the Henry Jackson Society develops the branding required for instant name recognition, successful events and new opportunities, and member, donor and partner gratification.

This position is an opportunity for a well-rounded individual, with a proven record of sales and sponsorship, to contribute to one of the best regarded events schedules in Westminster and to develop relationships with international and domestic policy figures.

Main Duties:

  • Develop and deliver a programme of revenue-generating conferences, events and other potential new event-related innovations (e.g. Corporate Engagement Programme) supported by the Events Manager. Developing themes, sourcing speakers, audiences and researching event content and speakers.
  • Building compelling and engaging agendas for conferences and events, researching the issues, identifying speakers and taking advice from colleagues and external partners.
  • Taking charge of the sales process for these events and processes, and leading on this.
  • Overseeing all technical aspects of these events and processes including programme production, supplier selection and management, marketing, operations and logistics.
  • Cultivating strong relationships with members, speakers, corporate and key supporters, and seeking out opportunities for engagement, such as attendance at relevant events, arranging meetings and developing discussion over HJS programme and activity output.
  • Researching potential sponsors, putting bespoke packages together and securing sponsors for particular events.
  • Identifying, managing and extending HJS’s network of core partners ensuring the highest standards of communication are maintained at all times.
  • Overseeing the delivery of the existing events programme by the Events Manager.
  • Identifying appropriate corporates and high net worth individuals to approach for event funding and new events and process based opportunities, playing a key role in pitching and tenders.

Internships

The Henry Jackson Society offers a variety of internships aimed at politically-minded, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individuals. Our internships offer a valuable immersion into the world of international relations and are designed to foster career development.

Internship programmes are available mainly within The Henry Jackson Society’s research centres but also in some non-research departments, such as Communications, Parliamentary and Events.

CRT Interns – Human Trafficking 

The Henry Jackson Society is seeking interns for a project within its Centre for the Response to Radicalisation and Terrorism (CRT). Applicants should have an interest in the role of women within terrorist organisations, an understanding of legal and international directives on human trafficking, and a passion for ending the use of sexual violence in conflict. A master’s degree qualification is desirable, but not essential. Candidates with a background in law, criminology, terrorism, and/or gender studies are encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate for the Henry Jackson Society internship will have the following skills / capabilities:

  • Proven interest in the Henry Jackson Society’s work;
  • Graduate or postgraduate qualification in international relations, politics, or another related field;
  • Excellent writing and research skills;
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills;
  • Be a motivated self-starter who is capable of acting independently and who possesses the capacity to absorb and execute instructions quickly in a busy environment.
  • Have experience of research, either academically or professionally;
  • Have sympathy with our principles;

Other Information

Internships can be undertaken on a full- or part-time basis, and usually last for a duration of up to three months. They are offered on a flexible basis so that individuals can, for example, fit their internship around part-time work, studies, or other commitments.
