Year 1541 (MDXLI) was a common year starting on Saturday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar.
The Commodore 1541 (also known as the CBM 1541 and VIC-1541) is a floppy disk drive which was made by Commodore International for the Commodore 64 (C64), Commodore's most popular home computer. The best-known floppy disk drive for the C64, the 1541 is a single-sided 170-kilobyte drive for 5¼" disks. The 1541 directly followed the Commodore 1540 (meant for the VIC-20).
The disk drive uses group code recording (GCR) and contains a MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor, doubling as a disk controller and on-board disk operating system processor. The number of sectors per track varies from 17 to 21 (an early implementation of zone bit recording). The drive's built-in disk operating system is CBM DOS 2.6.
The 1541 was priced at under US$400 at its introduction. A C64 plus a 1541 cost about $900, while an Apple II with no disk drive cost $1295. The first 1541 drives produced in 1982 have a label on the front reading VIC-1541 and have an off-white case to match the VIC-20. In 1983, the 1541 was switched to having the familiar beige case and a front label reading simply "1541" along with rainbow stripes to match the Commodore 64.
Disk storage is a general category of storage mechanisms where data are recorded by various electronic, magnetic, optical, or mechanical changes to a surface layer of one or more rotating disks. A disk drive is a device implementing such a storage mechanism. Notable types are the hard disk drive (HDD) containing a non-removable disk, the floppy disk drive (FDD) and its removable floppy disk, and various optical disc drives and associated optical disc media.
(The spelling disk and disc are used interchangeably except where trademarks preclude one usage, e.g. the Compact Disc logo. The choice of a particular form is frequently historical, as in IBM's usage of the disk form beginning in 1956 with the "IBM 350 disk storage unit").
Audio information was originally recorded by analog methods (see Sound recording and reproduction). Similarly the first video disc used an analog recording method. In the music industry, analog recording has been mostly replaced by digital optical technology where the data are recorded in a digital format with optical information.
A floppy disk, also called a diskette or just disk, is a type of disk storage composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric that removes dust particles. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive (FDD).
Floppy disks, initially as 8-inch (200 mm) media and later in 5¼-inch (133 mm) and 3½-inch (90 mm) sizes, were a ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange from the mid-1970s well into the 2000s.
By 2010, computer motherboards are rarely manufactured with floppy drive support; 3½-inch floppy disks can be used with an external USB floppy disk drive, but USB drives for 5¼-inch, 8-inch, and non-standard diskettes are rare to non-existent. These formats are usually handled by older equipment.
While floppy disk drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy industrial computer equipment, they have been superseded by data storage methods with much greater capacity, such as USB flash sticks, flash storage cards, portable external hard disk drives, optical discs, and computer networks.
Commodore generally refers to Commodore (rank), a naval rank. It may also refer to:

My review of the Commodore 1541 disk drive. I take you through the setup and see what happens when you connect two drives. I go through some drive commands and there's a little bit of development history of the Commodore disk drive. "The show is inspired from the famous humorous column 'Duniya Ne Undha Chasma' written by the eminent Gujarati writer Mr. Tarak Mehta. This story evolves around happenings in ""Gokuldham Co-operative Society"" and covers topical issues which are socially relevant. The show predominantly - Promoolves around 'Jethalaal' (Dilip Joshi) who is an uneducated Gujarati businessman. Your 'Taarak Mehta' (Sailesh Lodha), is his neighbour. 'Jethalaal' finds a friend and philosopher in 'Taarak Mehta' and often goes to him for advice whenever he is in trouble. Jethalaal's family includes his simpleton wife 'Daya Ben' (Disha Wakani) and a mischievous son 'Tapu' (Bhavya Gandhi). Tapu is a menace and a constant source of trouble to all the members of Gokuldham. They have often warned 'Jethalaal' to reform ...
Repairing and cleaning an old Commodore 1541 Floppy Disk Drive for the C64. The drive didn't spin up if you turned it on and didn't react at all to commands from the computer. LEDs were working. Spindle spun for a brief moment if you turned the drive off. I suspected some problem with the controller ICs. Join me in this adventure and see if I can fix it. (Spoiler: yes.) I purchased a copy of JiffyDOS for my 1541C, so I wanted to install and test it.
I dusted off my old C64 disks which have'nt seen the light of day since 1988 to show a couple of the performance boosting mods I worked on during my C64 hacking days. This is a C64 fast loader I developed back in 1987 using a technique I discovered to exploit the 18 processor cycles between GCR byte reads from the 1541 floppy disk. This allowed me to use lookup conversion tables to 2/3 convert the sectors back to 8-bit as the data was being read in. Further performance gains could be obtained from track alignment to reduce latency. This is all on a standard IEC bus connection and standard format disk. It loads raw 182 blocks in about 9 seconds. Data was transferred using both the data & clock lines syncing up the C64 and 1541 CPUs after each byte is transferred. Once the screen goes l...
