i/ˌɡwɑːtᵻˈmɑːləˌ ɡwæ-ˌ ɡɑː-/ GWAH-tə-MAH-lə, GWAT-ə-MAH-lə or GAH-tə-MAH-lə; Spanish: [gwateˈmala]), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, Honduras to the east and El Salvador to the southeast. With an estimated population of around 15.8 million, it is the most populous state in Central America. A representative democracy, Guatemala's capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved in 1841.

There's no telling what he'll be dealing with on any given night. One moment Dr. Chiu will be dealing with a house fire—the next he'll be treating gunshot wounds.

Guatemala Coffee Information
Coffee production in Guatemala began to develop in the 1850s. Coffee is an important element in the economy of Guatemala. Guatemala was Central America's top producer of coffee for most of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, until overtaken by Honduras in 2011. Illegal exports to Honduras and Mexico are not reflected in official statistics. The coffee industry began to develop in Guatemala in the 1850s and 1860s, initially mixing its cultivation with cochineal. Small plantations flourished in Amatitlán and Antigua areas in the southwest.[4] Initial growth though was slow due to lack of knowledge and technology. The construction of the inter-oceanic corridor of Guatemala, an ambitious infrastructure project of 12.000 million dollar, by which is intended to link the Pacific Ocean with the Guatemalan Caribbean, will start from April next year, official sources said. Economy: Guatemala’s economy is mostly agricultural, with its main exports being coffee, sugar, cardamom, bananas, and cotton. Agricultural exports contribute to about 75 percent of Guatemala’s export earnings.
Demographics: Guatemala’s population is about 16.95 million people as of May 4, 2017. The population is approximately 47% latino, 47% indigena, 5% garifuna and 1% other. Spanish is the main language, among many others, and Mayan Spirituality, Catholicism, and Evangelical Christianity are the main religions.
Food: Common foods in Guatemala include tortillas and tamales, black beans and rice, and wheat in the form of pasta and bread. Guatemalan food is traditionally made in the home, and going to restaurants to eat is not very common.
Holidays: The Guatemalan calendar is determined by the Roman Catholic Church. Because of this, their most important holidays include Christmas, Advent, Easter, and Three Kings Day. Other holidays include the Day of the Dead, which celebrates family members who have passed away, Revolution Day, which remembers the day Jorge Ubico was overthrown in 1944, and New Year’s Day, which they celebrate by wearing a new outfit.
Hobbies: In Guatemala, there are many things you can do fill your free time. You can enjoy sports, weave clothing and fabric, and dance. Most Guatemalans hand weave textiles, either to sell or making into clothing. Popular recreational activities include soccer, white-water rafting, spelunking, rock climbing, and kayaking. Popular dances include Cumbia and Punta.
Current Events: Today, Guatemala has recently endured some political troubles. In 2015, their President, Otto Pérez Molina was discovered to be heading a corruption ring. Their former vice president who had resigned not long before was arrested and over 14 cabinet members resigned. After its recent problems, Guatemala is back on its feet.

Most Guatemalans hand weave textiles, either to sell or making into clothing. Popular recreational activities include soccer, white-water rafting, spelunking, rock climbing, and kayaking. Popular dances include Cumbia and Punta.
Current Events: Today, Guatemala has recently endured some political troubles. In 2015, their President, Otto Pérez Molina was discovered to be heading a corruption ring. Their former vice president who had resigned not long before was arrested and over 14 cabinet members resigned. After its recent problems, Guatemala is back on its feet.

The construction of the inter-oceanic corridor of Guatemala, an ambitious infrastructure project of 12.000 million dollar, by which is intended to link the Pacific Ocean with the Guatemalan Caribbean, will start from April next year, official sources said.
President of the Inter-Oceanic Corridor Board, Guillermo Catalan, said at the launch of the initiative feasibility studies and opinions have been completed and approved by the authorities, so it is expected that in the next nine months to start with construction.
The interoceanic corridor, private sector project supported by the Government of Guatemala, seeks to unite the country's Pacific to Atlantic via a dry corridor to be built through a 372 km road and a railway and pipeline route. It is anticipated that in the coming months to acquire the 3,533 dedicated land owners to the same number of spaces where will be built the necessary infrastructure.
The project will cost between 10,000 and 12,000 million and construction is expected to last at least five years. Construction of the corridor will boost the country's economy and generate more than 30,000 direct jobs and will directly benefit 46 of the 333 municipalities, of which there is support from their mayors. He also termed as "dry canal", includes the construction of two ports, one on the Pacific and one in the Atlantic, which will be connected by a road, five pipelines and two railway lines for freight and passengers, as well as installation of industrial areas along the 372 kilometers thereof. The oceanic highway will cut sections 67, 33 tunnels and 21 viaducts.
Through this project, which began to take shape last fourteen years, Guatemala seeks to turn in an alternative route to world trade after the Panama Canal.

When I was a boy he and I traveled by bus from one end of Mexico to the other staying in the homes of random people and taking in all of what Mexico had to offer (large cockroaches, hot food and all!) . I guess some of that rubbed off on me. I speak Spanish and English fluently, and can get by in German, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese. Today, when I visit another country my favorite place to be is in someone’s house taking in the feeling of their lives and culture, and eating their food!
This course allows one to learn about world history by discussing the history and culture of individual countries. The countries selected for this series are ones that I have traveled to or are the homeland of a person with whom I am acquainted with, or both.
Some of the topics that are discussed to help learn about culture are:
i. Art
ii. Music
iii. Dance
iv. Politics/government
v. Language
vi. Money
vii. Food
b. Each lesson involves a brief history of the country and a printout that invites the learner to consider lessons that can be learned from that country’s history. Most of the lessons involve a recipe to make a meal common to that area. (because food says a lot about a culture and is really fun to make!)

Guatemala has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Latin American, a rate which increases significantly among the rural indigenous populations. As such, the Guatemalan Red Cross has identified maternal and child health as a priority area of work. One of the areas where the GRC's Maternal and Child Health program is currently being carried out is the western Department of San Marcos, with the support of the Norwegian Red Cross. The branch volunteers help to organize the women of the communities in support groups, to help each other learn about good practices relating to feeding and nutrition, prevention of illness, prenatal control, and the healthy development of children. Community health committees are formed and meet regularly to analyse the health situation of the community and to take actions to make improvements. The Guatemalan Red Cross also works with men and youth to talk about other health issues such as sexual health, rights, and family planning.

Here it is! I'm so thrilled to release this Guatemala Travel Guide, and share Albion Fit's top places (& secrets) to visit! This trip was not only an adventure, but so incredibly inspiring. To be there alongside the owners of Albion Fit (who are an absolute HOOT), and see where so much of their inspiration comes from was seriously so cool. I'm convinced that Guatemala is one of the worlds best kept secrets with it's endless beauty, and welcoming culture. We had the pleasure of meeting the talented Albion Fit team, who make the visions become a reality, and to be honest, it was one of my highlights of the trip! To see the process and hard work that goes into each swimsuit and piece of apparel we had been wearing, was mind blowing. Everything was cut and sewn with such precision and care. If you're in the mood for an inspiring entrepreneur story, you gotta listen to theirs -- you will be blown away! Other than that, my favorite places were the waterfall hot spring (Finea El Paraiso) because it was beautiful and had HOT WATER streaming down the falls! Like, is this real life!? AND the adventure hike we did at 4am to the Tikal Mayan Ruins. Can you believe the sound of those howler monkeys!? They sound like dinosaurs of some sort. It was seriously such a thrill, and so beautiful when the sun came up. No wonder they shot Star Wars there (By the way, have you seen the new one? Call me a geek, but I lovedddd it.). Another one of my highlights was being there with my sister and brother-in-law, they motivated me to get out and exercise and it was actually super fun. We were running through little groups of school kids and trying to not get hit by busses in Antigua! Ha! Working out is something I rarely do on vacation, and I'm making it a must from now on.

The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. The port is located next to a free trade zone, the Zona de Libre Industria y Comercio Santo Tomás de Castilla, called Zolic. The port currently employs 2,100 workers. In 2004, 4.56 million tons of trading goods went through the port from 1,372 ships.

In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here. Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua.

To see the process and hard work that goes into each swimsuit and piece of apparel we had been wearing, was mind blowing. Everything was cut and sewn with such precision and care. If you're in the mood for an inspiring entrepreneur story, you gotta listen to theirs -- you will be blown away! Other than that, my favorite places were the waterfall hot spring (Finea El Paraiso) because it was beautiful and had HOT WATER streaming down the falls! Like, is this real life!? AND the adventure hike we did at 4am to the Tikal Mayan Ruins. Can you believe the sound of those howler monkeys!? They sound like dinosaurs of some sort. It was seriously such a thrill, and so beautiful when the sun came up. No wonder they shot Star Wars there (By the way, have you seen the new one? Call me a geek, but I lovedddd it.). Another one of my highlights was being there with my sister and brother-in-law, they motivated me to get out and exercise and it was actually super fun. We were running through little groups of school kids and trying to not get hit by busses in Antigua! Ha! Working out is something I rarely do on vacation, and I'm making it a must from now on.

In this episode of Guatemala Unplugged, DBH heads to the center of Guatemala city at Kilometer Zero. After a brief history lesson on the constantly mobile capital, David tours us through the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral, with its Black Christ Statue, mummified bishop and exclusive Pope's quarters- constructed for the two visits by the Pope during the 20th and 21st Centuries. Before winding down from day one of the trip, David tours the Portal of Commerce followed by its main restaurant, The Portal. Here David enjoys a mixed brew, tapas and traditional music inside this lively, local spot.

In this episode of Guatemala Unplugged, DBH heads to the center of Guatemala city at Kilometer Zero. After a brief history lesson on the constantly mobile capital, David tours us through the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral, with its Black Christ Statue, mummified bishop and exclusive Pope's quarters- constructed for the two visits by the Pope during the 20th and 21st Centuries. Before winding down from day one of the trip, David tours the Portal of Commerce followed by its main restaurant, The Portal. Here David enjoys a mixed brew, tapas and traditional music inside this lively, local spot.

Here it is! I'm so thrilled to release this Guatemala Travel Guide, and share Albion Fit's top places (& secrets) to visit! This trip was not only an adventure, but so incredibly inspiring. To be there alongside the owners of Albion Fit (who are an absolute HOOT), and see where so much of their inspiration comes from was seriously so cool. I'm convinced that Guatemala is one of the worlds best kept secrets with it's endless beauty, and welcoming culture. We had the pleasure of meeting the talented Albion Fit team, who make the visions become a reality, and to be honest, it was one of my highlights of the trip! To see the process and hard work that goes into each swimsuit and piece of apparel we had been wearing, was mind blowing. Everything was cut and sewn with such precision and care. If you're in the mood for an inspiring entrepreneur story, you gotta listen to theirs -- you will be blown away! Other than that, my favorite places were the waterfall hot spring (Finea El Paraiso) because it was beautiful and had HOT WATER streaming down the falls! Like, is this real life!? AND the adventure hike we did at 4am to the Tikal Mayan Ruins. Can you believe the sound of those howler monkeys!? They sound like dinosaurs of some sort. It was seriously such a thrill, and so beautiful when the sun came up. No wonder they shot Star Wars there (By the way, have you seen the new one? Call me a geek, but I lovedddd it.). Another one of my highlights was being there with my sister and brother-in-law, they motivated me to get out and exercise and it was actually super fun. We were running through little groups of school kids and trying to not get hit by busses in Antigua! Ha! Working out is something I rarely do on vacation, and I'm making it a must from now on.

AWESOME DRONE VIDEO OF VOLCANO HIKE ACATENANGO IN GUATEMALA! LAVA, ASH & ERUPTING VOLCANO FUEGO!
Last week we hiked the active volcano Acatenango in Guatemala. This one of the coolest activities you can do near Antigua, Guatemala; hiking, climbing and camping on the active volcano Acatenango while having a perfect view on the highly active volcano Fuego.
The Acatenango hike is about 6 hours uphill to basecamp. At the basecamp the guide set up the tents and light the campfire to prepare dinner and keep us warm. The view from the basecamp is amazing! We were just above the clouds and therefore it felt like heaven, watching the sunset high in the white cloudy sky with highly active and erupting volcano Fuego just a stroll away. Volcano Fuego was erupting all night, spitting lava & ash high in the sky. Truly breathtaking!
The next morning we woke up very early to hike the last part of the volcano in order to experience the spectacular sunrise on top of volcano Acatenango, at almost 4000 meter hight, while overlooking Guatemala. Wow!

There are moments in life when you just need to be bold and follow your heart.
For me it came just before the end of my sophomore year of college. I realized I was on a path where I’d most likely graduate, get a job, start a family, and work until retirement, and where many people may aspire to have all this, I knew I needed something different.
With the help of a cousin I was able to get connected with an orphanage in Guatemala where I could volunteer. So I took a semester off and flew to Central America to begin what would be a life changing experience.
I once heard that life is 10 percent of what happens to us and 90 percent of how we react to it, and by being immersed in that culture and living with those children I learned this lesson firsthand. Despite the many challenges they faced, they still found ways to enjoy every single day.
After returning home I promised myself that once I finished my degree that I would find ways to continue traveling.
My name is Brennan Perry and I was born and raised in Encinitas, CA. It’s a surf town a half hour north of San Diego and it wasn’t until I left home that I really became aware of how fortunate I was to grow up in a place like that. On any given day you can drive a few hours and find the ocean, the desert, mountains, or even a foreign country and through all that I developed the need for adventure and a respect for Mother Nature.
In the 18 months since I graduated it’s been my mission to find interesting jobs that give me just enough money to travel for the rest of the year. I’ve worked as a resident camp counselor, bar security and an ocean lifeguard.
On my last trip I spent 3 months as a volcano tour guide in Nicaragua and then another 3 months traveling through the rest of Central America.
A few months ago I heard about an event called Baja-Haha. Every year over 100 boats sail from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I instantly knew that this would be a great opportunity to start another long trip and with less than a week before the group left I was able to secure a crew position on one of the boats.
I can’t deny there are risks involved in traveling alone through foreign countries and when you’re gut instincts tell you something isn’t right, it’s time to make a change. To make a long story short, the Captain of the boat I started on wasn’t as competent as I hoped he would be and refused to stop at the halfway point when his engine broke down.
I had no interest in heading out to deep offshore waters on a damaged boat and with a Captain I didn’t trust, so using the radio on board I was able to hail down another boat in the group that needed crew. As you can imagine, the Captain wasn’t exactly excited about losing his only crewmember, so I literally had to jump ship while we were moving. Luckily the owners of the 2nd boat were awesome and I was able to enjoy the rest of the ride down Baja. Personally I am trying to use it as a learning experience instead of viewing it as a mistake.
My dad tells me that one of my best attributes is that I always have a plan, even though it may be constantly changing. As of now I am just going to enjoy Mexico for a while before I figure out where I’ll go next. Eventually I’m hoping to make it to Panama and from there I can decide if I want to head towards the Caribbean Islands or South America. But who knows, I may wake up tomorrow with a brand new idea and everything could change. I guess that’s the beauty in living out of your backpack.

I lived in Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico which is actually Central America, Cuba and Guatemala. I speak Spanish, Maori and English. I've always had a connection with South America. I dance salsa. I've always loved that world since I was young, maybe age 12 or 13 ... I loved it....
