Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.
The International Energy Agency projected in 2014 that under its "high renewables" scenario, by 2050, solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar power would contribute about 16 and 11 percent, respectively, of the worldwide electricity consumption, and solar would be the world's largest source of electricity. Most solar installations would be in China and India.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. As the cost of solar electricity has fallen, the number of grid-connected solar PV systems has grown into the millions and utility-scale solar power stations with hundreds of megawatts are being built. Solar PV is rapidly becoming an inexpensive, low-carbon technology to harness renewable energy from the Sun.

A short introduction to Solar Photovoltaic energy generation
Solar cells integrated into new construction, particularly skyscrapers, are an enticing energy option. However, this effort can be hampered by the cost and architectural considerations sometimes needed to mount traditional photovoltaic (PV) cells. What if engineers could make it easier with a lightweight, clear and flexible solar cell? Traditional solar panels, such as silicon, soak up much of the sun's light, including visible light, and convert it to energy. A transparent panel allows visible light to shine through, by making the light we can't see with our eyes--such as ultraviolet and infrared--do the work. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Michigan State University materials scientist and chemical engineer Richard Lunt and his team are developing transparent s...
April 2016 edit: On March 31, 2016, I sold this house and the panels. It all now belongs to the new owner. During my nearly six years of ownership, all the panels, the wiring and the installation were completely trouble-free. However, six of the Enphase M190 inverters failed. All were replaced at no cost to me, although it took considerable coordination with Enphase and the installer to make that happen. The Enphase Envoy control box (shown toward the end of the video) also died and we bought a replacement. Otherwise, we never had any leaks or panel failures in our 5 years and 9 months of ownership. Back to the original description: During the week of June 21, 2010, I had a photovoltaic solar system installed at my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The installation took place...

Concentrated solar systems make 0.23m² of PV cell generate the same power as 350m² worth reducing the amount of silicon cell needed by a factor of 1000. Each dish is 50 foot diameter and generates up to 31.6 Kw using triple junction PV cells @ 36.5% eff.
In this video, I give a simple explanation on how Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) works. This is the type of solar power that uses thousands of mirrors over hundreds of acres to reflect sunlight on a tower. This heats up molten salt to over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heated molten salt then creates steam from water, driving a steam turbine to produce electricity. CSP plants are used in primarily in the western United States. A big advantage of CSP is that power can produced at night time for at least several hours after the sun has set. ---- Here is my DIY Solar and Wind book that was published on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1508454310/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp;=1789&creative;=390957&creativeASIN;=1508454310&linkCode;=as2&tag;=erilaysyoucha-20&linkId;=URNF3DPORKY4M5YR Barnes...

Find out in this animation how GE’s Concentrated Solar Power Plant with Storage works, and how this new technology transforms the heat of the sun into electricity and above all, how it can store it.
From towers to dishes to linear mirrors to troughs, concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies reflect and collect solar heat to generate electricity. A single CSP plant can generate enough power for about 90,000 homes. This video explains what CSP is, how it works, and how systems like parabolic troughs produce renewable power. For more information on the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's CSP research, see the Solar Energy Technology Program's Concentrating Solar Power Web page at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/solar/csp_program.html.
Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. The concentrated heat is then used as a heat source for a conventional power plant. For additional information visit: www.murraypowerandgeneration.com

Concentrating solar power uses the sun’s rays to create thermal energy that is used to produce electricity, then store it for use when it’s needed. A SunShot Initiative project with Sandia National Laboratories is perfecting new technology that allows heat to be stored at higher temperatures, improving the efficiency of concentrating solar power plants and allowing utilities to provide customers with clean energy even after the sun has set. The Noor Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) complex is Morocco’s first utility-scale solar energy complex and serves as a critical step of the Moroccan Solar Energy Program. The three-plant Noor-Ouarzazate CSP complex seeks to contribute to the commercial viability of CSP and its potential throughout Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Operating with an installed capacity of 160 megawatts (MW), the first phase expects 240,000 tons of CO₂ emissions to be avoided per annum. By 2018, the three-phase project will be the largest of its kind in the world with over 500 MW of installed capacity, and will produce enough clean power to meet the needs of 1.1 million Moroccans.

The Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Park is a $130 million project on nearly 500 acres of land in the Cholistan desert in Punjab. When the entire project is complete in 2017, the site could have 5.2 million photovoltaic cells, “producing as much as 1,000 MW of electricity—and enough to power about 320,000 households,”. The area’s 13 hours of daily sunlight and its flat expanse of desert make it ideal for a solar farm. “The solar park will also shrink Pakistan’s carbon footprint,” according to Najam Ahmed Shah, the chief executive of the solar park, “displacing about 57,500 tonnes of coal burn and reducing emissions by 90,750 tonnes every year.”
