Direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) is a type of artificial satellite which usually sends satellite television signals for home reception.
The type of satellite television which uses direct-broadcast satellites is known as direct-broadcast satellite television (DBSTV) or direct-to-home television (DTHTV). This has initially distinguished the transmissions directly intended for home viewers from cable television distribution services that are sometimes carried on the same satellite. The term DTH predates DBS and is often used in reference to services carried by lower power satellites which required larger dishes (1.7 m diameter or greater) for reception.
In Europe, prior to the launch of Astra 1A in 1988, the term DBS was commonly used to describe the nationally commissioned satellites planned and launched to provide television broadcasts to the home within several European countries (such as BSB in the United Kingdom and TV-Sat in Germany). These services were to use the D-Mac and D2-Mac format and BSS frequencies with circular polarization from orbital positions allocated to each country. Before these DBS satellites, home satellite television in Europe was limited to a few channels, really intended for cable distribution, and requiring dishes typically of 1.7 m.
This is a list of satellites in geostationary orbit. These satellites are commonly used for communication purposes, such as radio and television networks, backhaul, and direct broadcast. Traditional global navigation systems do not use geostationary satellites, but some SBAS navigation satellites do. A number of weather satellites are also present in geostationary orbits. Not included in the list below are several more classified military geostationary satellites, such as PAN.
Listings are from west to east (decreasing longitude in the Western Hemisphere and increasing longitude in the Eastern Hemisphere) by orbital position, starting and ending with the International Date Line.
Some of these satellites are separated from each other by as little as one tenth of a degree longitude. This corresponds to an inter-satellite spacing of approximately 73 km. The major consideration for spacing of geostationary satellites is the beamwidth at-orbit of uplink transmitters, which is primarily a factor of the size and stability of the uplink dish, as well as what frequencies the satellite's transponders receive; satellites with discontiguous frequency allocations can be much closer together.
A communications satellite is an artificial satellite that relays and amplifies radio telecommunications signals via a transponder; it creates a communication channel between a source transmitter and a receiver(s) at different locations on Earth. Communications satellites are used for television, telephone, radio, internet, and military applications. There are over 2,000 communications satellites in Earth’s orbit, used by both private and government organizations.
Wireless communication uses electromagnetic waves to carry signals. These waves require line-of-sight, and are thus obstructed by the curvature of the Earth. The purpose of communications satellites is to relay the signal around the curve of the Earth allowing communication between widely separated points. The electromagnetic signals that communication satellites work with, have a large spectrum of wavelengths and frequencies. To keep these waves from interfering with one another, international organizations have certain rules and regulations describing which wavelength a certain company or group can use. By separating out wavelengths, communication satellites will have minimal interference and be able to communicate effectively.

We are putting up a antenna to receive over air broadcasts. We used the abandoned Dish bracket and box. I apologize for the sound problem. I will add captioning bubbles for the bits were I covered up the microphone with my thumb.... dumb operator error. We were spending 60 bucks a month for cartoon network and nickelodeon (because that is what i mainly watched) then we reduced to the bare package and it was still 40 dollars a month. The Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), India’s first attempt to use technology as an educational tool. Marking the first major India-U.S. partnership in space, SITE used National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s first direct broadcasting satellite to beam television programmes to remote Indian villages. Antennae measuring 3 metres, a far cry from today’s direct-to-home (DTH) dish antennae, were used to receive signals. In 1975, when television was a rarity even in urban India, TV sets for community viewing were set up in schools or Panchayat centres in 2,400 villages in six States — Bihar, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan. The selected villages — in the most backward and inaccessible parts of the States — included some in Ori...
Satellite television is a system of supplying television programming using broadcast signals relayed from communication satellites. The signals are received via an outdoor parabolic reflector antenna usually referred to as a satellite dish and a low-noise block downconverter (LNB). A satellite receiver then decodes the desired television programme for viewing on a television set. Receivers can be external set-top boxes, or a built-in television tuner. Satellite television provides a wide range of channels and services, especially to geographic areas without terrestrial television or cable television. The direct-broadcast satellite television signal can be either older analogue signals, or newer digital signals, both of which require a compatible receiver. Digital signals may include high-d...

Dating to 1965 and produced by Communications Satellite Corp., or COMSAT, "Live Via Early Bird" is a fascinating film about the assembly and launch by NASA of the Early Bird communications satellite. Intelsat I (nicknamed Early Bird for the proverb "The early bird catches the worm") was the first commercial communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit, on April 6, 1965. It was built by the Space and Communications Group of Hughes Aircraft Company (later Hughes Space and Communications Company, and now Boeing Satellite Systems) for COMSAT, which activated it on June 28. It was based on the satellite that Hughes had built for NASA to demonstrate that communications via synchronous-orbit satellite were feasible. Its booster was a Thrust Augmented Delta (Delta D). After a seri...
