Jean Merilyn Simmons, OBE (31 January 1929 – 22 January 2010) was a British actress. One of J. Arthur Rank's "well-spoken young starlets", she appeared predominantly in films, beginning with those made in Great Britain during and after the Second World War, followed mainly by Hollywood films from 1950 onwards.
Simmons was born in Lower Holloway, London, to Charles Simmons, a bronze medalist in gymnastics at the 1912 Summer Olympics, and his wife, Winifred (née Loveland) Simmons. Jean was the youngest of four children with siblings Edna, Harold and Lorna. She began acting at the age of 14. During the Second World War, the Simmons family was evacuated to Winscombe, Somerset. Her father, a physical education teacher, taught briefly at Sidcot School, and some time during this period Simmons followed her elder sister on to the village stage and sang songs such as "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow Wow". Returning to London and just enrolled at the Aida Foster School of Dance, Simmons was spotted by the director Val Guest, who cast her in the Margaret Lockwood vehicle Give Us the Moon.

A tender drama from 1985 with Jean Simmons looking as lovely as ever - and giving a wonderful performance as a caring widow meeting her aunt for the first time only to find her in a dreadful state being held a virtual prisoner by her controlling, unpleasant and greedy son, played by Bryan Forbes in his first major acting role since "Guns of Navarone" in 1961, and with June Ritchie portraying an equally unpleasant character as his wife, both who hope to gain from her Will. Support roles are played by Mona Washbourne, Pat Heywood, Richard Warner, Richard Hope, Ann-Marie Gwatkin, Christopher Fulford and Jim Carter (long before "Downton Abbey"!). The quality of this video tape transfer is not good, but the drama makes it worth suffering! Best not to watch it full-screen...

The Living Legend Guitarist from KISS that is Gene Simmons is back in Australia prepping for the Bands 40th. Anniversary, although Gene admits it's actually the 41st. year of KISS and Gene really tells alot about the Band early on which was very enlightening especially for KISS Army members who will probably find some things out about Gene and KISS they never knew about before. Fact: Did you know that Gene Simmons is a dual National of both the United States & Israel! A tremendous thriller from 1950 with the entire cast at the top of their game - and that includes one of Jean Simmons' best roles at this period of her life, also a typically tough performance by Trevor Howard, and then there's manic Barry Jones, so superb in "Seven Days to Noon", with good support from Kenneth More, Sonia Dresdel and Maxwell Reed. In my opinion this is definitely one of the best British movies from 1950. The story concerns an ex-Secret Service man (Howard) who takes a job with a butterfly-collector (Jones) and gets involved with his ‘disturbed' niece (Simmons) who becomes framed for the murder of the gardener (Reed). When things get heavy, Howard goes on the run with Simmons, believing/knowing that she's innocent. The finale ‘chase' is somewhat reminiscent of "The 39 Step...
The original copy of this film was so bad I held off posting it for a long time but with an immense amount of attention, combatting the stretching, correcting the out-of-sync soundtrack, adding a little sharpness and more colour, it is by no means up to the standard this film should be but although the four sections of the film are in different ratios it's certainly just a little better than what I'd originally intended to post, and as the film is unavailable anywhere, in any form, as far as I can discover, it might just be of interest to those who are particular fans of Jean Simmons - who was never lovelier than in this movie! It's still best not to watch it on full screen... It is the original version of Henry de Vere Stacpoole's novel (omitting the silent 1923 production) many, many ye...
Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. Having said that, it's another of her ‘outrageous' female characterisations, if in a slightly lower-key to her pre...
