Hargeisa (Somali: Hargeysa, Arabic: هرجيسا Hargeisa serves as the capital of Somaliland, a self-declared state that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia.
During the Middle Ages, Hargeisa was part of the Adal Sultanate's domain. The city later succeeded Berbera as the capital of the British Somaliland protectorate in 1941. In 1960, the protectorate gained independence and united as scheduled days later with the Trust Territory of Somaliland (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the Somali Republic (Somalia) on July 1.
Hargeisa is situated in a valley in the Galgodon (Ogo) highlands, and sits at an elevation of 1,334 m (4,377 ft). Home to rock art from the Neolithic period, the city is also a commercial hub for precious stone-cutting, construction, retail services and importing/exporting, among other activities.
The place-name Hargeisa literally means "the place where hide is sold". Although little is known about the city's pre-19th century history,Encyclopaedia Aethiopica suggests that the settlement may have evolved in the latter half of the 1800s as a Qadiriyya settlement established by Shaykh Maddar, near a water-stop used by nomadic stock-herders on the way to the town of Harar. It thus proposes that the name "Hargeisa" was possibly derived from the sobriquet Harar as-sagir, meaning "Harar the little".

A travel promo video showing a recent trip to the Horn of Africa to visit both Ethiopia and the self declared independent state of Somaliland. We traveled overland from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa visiting towns such as Dire Dawa and Harar the crossing the border into Somaliland. From here we visited Hargeisa, the capital plus the costal settlement of Berbera. The people of Somaliland have been fighting for international recognition ever since the civil war and declaration of independence in 1991. With deserted beaches, 5000 year old cave paintings and a tiny capital city full of warm friendly people, Somaliland is a extremely unique side of Africa, that is so far empty of tourists, yet full of adventure and potential!
When most people think of the country Somalia, they associate it with the only areas national media cover, pirates, extremist terrorism, famine and war. A self declared independent state of this country named Somaliland seemed to be different from the rest, the people were happy, it was safe to travel too and they seek peace following the 1988 Somali war. Somaliland is a self declared independent state, that has been fighting for recognition since the 1960’s. Since then, Somaliland has managed to instate its own visa’s, currency, police force and even access to reliable internet. I wanted to discover more about the somali people are what they are really like, and how they live their lives. So i researched ways to get into the country. Crossing the border is relatively easy in fact, you ju...
Somalia was country number 155/196 on my Expedition promoting Positive Peace through Sustainable Tourism. Please note that this experience was my own, and I think it's important to respect that we each have our own experiences when we travel and share that however we'd like to. I went into Somalia with an open mind and had a truly educational experience thanks to the Peace Hotel 1 and everyone who helped me out there, ensuring my safety while also making sure that I saw the true, raw and beautiful aspects of Mogadishu. Please spare all negative comments as they are not welcome in this community. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to experience Somalia and the truly kind people and I hope to go back again soon! One thing I took away from this trip and the many I've been on, is that d...
Planned for a long time, we made a journey to Ethiopia and Somaliland in October 2016. In Ethiopia we visited the hot desert & alien looking volcanic landscapes of the Danakil Depression. In contrast, spiritual Lalibela and the green & lush highlands in the area, and Aksum & some of the rock-hewn churches in Tigray. And ancient Harar in the east. In Somaliland, we visited the capital Hargeisa, the terrific rock carvings of Laas Geel and the port town of Berbera. We did not meet any other foreign visitor in Somaliland, however we felt it was much safer than many western governments state in their formal travel advices. It could be useful to hire a personal guide, like we did. Both countries were highly fascinating.
After leaving Djibouti by land across the Somaliland border, the voyage continues in this videos as I traverse Zeila, Hargeisa, Laas Gaal, and Berbera. See the birds, animals, and people of Somaliland and the ancient cave paintings in Laas Gaal. Stay tuned for more videos from the trip coming soon.
Alhamdulilaah I was lucky enough to go on holiday with my family to Somalia this year. It was so lovely to be back home, and to see my family and friends I haven't seen in over a decade!! I really hope you guys enjoyed this video, and seeing how Mogadishu is rising! We still have a long way to go, but the progress is undeniable.

CARWADA QURUX BILA HARGEISA SOMALILAND
Take a trip to Somaliland and travel off the international map. Despite winning independence in a brutal civil war 20 years ago, Somaliland remains to be unrecognized by the international community. Eclipsed by Somalia's ongoing and complex troubles, Somaliland's milestones of restoring law and order, a rich democracy, and a running infrastructure without any aid from external sources tend to go unnoticed. Project Somaliland is a documentary about traveling to an internationally isolated nation. In this short film, MapMaker's Amy & Mike investigate the people and perspectives that helped to establish durable peace, security and democracy in Somaliland. Amazed by the role clan politics and nationalism play in establishing stable infrastructure -- this new view on relationships was one...
