Kazimierz (Polish pronunciation: [kaˈʑimʲɛʂ]; Latin: Casimiria; Yiddish: קוזמיר) is a historical district of Kraków and Kraków Old Town, Poland. Since its inception in the fourteenth century to the early nineteenth century, Kazimierz was an independent city, a royal city of the Crown of the Polish Kingdom, located south of Kraków Old Town and separated by a branch of the Vistula river. For many centuries, Kazimierz was a place of coexistence and interpenetration of Christian and Jewish cultures, its north-eastern part of the district was historic Jewish, whose Jewish inhabitants were forcibly relocated in 1941 by the German occupying forces into the Krakow ghetto just across the river in Podgórze . Today Kazimierz is one of the major tourist attractions of Krakow and an important center of cultural life of the city.
The boundaries of Kazimierz are defined by an old island in the Vistula river. The northern branch of the river (Stara Wisła – Old Vistula) was filled-in at the end of the 19th century during the partitions of Poland and made into an extension of ul. Stradomska Street connecting Kazimierz district with Kraków Old Town.
Kazimierz Dolny ([kaˈʑimʲɛʂ ˈdɔlnɨ] Yiddish: קאזמיר Kuzmir) is a small town in Central Poland, on the right (eastern) bank of the Vistula river in Puławy County, Lublin Voivodeship. Historically it belongs to Lesser Poland, and in the past it used to be one of the most important cities of the province.
It is a considerable tourist attraction as one of the most beautifully situated little towns in Poland. It enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 16th and the first half of the 17th century, due to the trade in grain conducted along the Vistula. It became an economic backwater after that trade declined, and this freeze in economic development enabled the town to preserve its Renaissance urban plan and appearance. Since the 19th century it has become a popular holiday destination, attracting artists and summer residents.
Kazimierz Dolny is an art center in Poland. Many painters retreat to this small town to paint and sell their work. Galleries can be found in almost every street, offering for sale sculptures, stained-glass, folk art, and fine art.

http://krakow.inyourpocket.com Kraków In Your Pocket editor Garet Van Reed tours Kazimierz, the district that housed Krakóws Jews for over 500 years. In the last decade it has been rediscovered, and its hollowed-out Jewish culture gradually reintroduced. Famous for its associations with Schindler and Spielberg, theres more to the historic Jewish quarter than cemeteries and synagogues. Lying between shops selling buttons and spanners, youll find the heart of Krakows artsy character. Peeling façades and wooden shutters hide dozens of smoky cafes, each one effecting an air of pre-war timelessness. Alternative, edgy and packed with oddities this is an essential point of interest to any visitor. For more information about Jewish Kraków check out Kraków In Your Pocket: http://krakow.inyourpock...
Kazimierz Jewish District, is the central district of Krakow, which is located over the hill of Wawel. Just get away from the elegant buildings of the Old City and walk to the south-east, to plunge, after just one kilometer, in a completely different. Instead of the wide streets traveled by cars, there are narrow streets and houses time-worn as a dress rumpled and worn with age. We visit the location where they filmed a scene in the movie Schindler's List, the scale and the child. Almost all identify with the Jewish quarter Kazimierz, in reality it is only the eastern part, and to be honest, even here the Jews are the majority. Were the ancient synagogues, historic buildings, a few shops and some kosher restaurants; for the rest of the population it is predominantly Catholic. We continue w...

May 7 was a rainy and overcast day in Krakow. My expert guide Monica first took me on a tour of the Krakow Ghetto, where from March 1941 about 15,000 Jewish residents were crammed into a small area of 320 buildings that used to be inhabited by only 3,000 people. The ghetto was liquidated by the Nazis between May 1942 and March 1943, when most of the inhabitants were deported to the Plaszow Labour Camp and to Auschwitz. The second stop on our walking tour on May 7, 2012 was the Schindler Factory, owned by the iconic entrepreneur Oscar Schindler who saved over 1,100 Jewish lives in his enamelware and ammunition factory during WWII. Since 2010 the factory has been turned into a museum that documents the Nazi occupation of Krakow with photos, movies, authentic artifacts and multimedia experien...
