The Antarctic (US English /æntˈɑːrktɪk/, UK English /ænˈtɑːrktɪk/ or /æntˈɑːrtɪk/ and /ænˈtɑːrtɪk/ or /ænˈɑːrtɪk/) is a polar region, specifically the region around the Earth's South Pole, opposite the Arctic region around the North Pole. The Antarctic comprises the continent of Antarctica and the ice shelves, waters, and island territories in the Southern Ocean situated south of the Antarctic Convergence. The region covers some 20% of the Southern Hemisphere, of which 5.5% (14 million km2) is the surface area of the continent itself.
The maritime part of the region constitutes the area of application of the international Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), where for technical reasons the Convention uses an approximation of the Convergence line by means of a line joining specified points along parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. The implementation of the Convention is managed through an international Commission headquartered in Hobart, Australia, by an efficient system of annual fishing quotas, licenses and international inspectors on the fishing vessels, as well as satellite surveillance.
An iceberg that scientists have been monitoring for months has finally broken off from Antarctica's Larsen-C ice shelf. Swansea University research officer Martin O'Leary, an iceberg expert on the UK-based Project MIDAS Antarctic team, spoke to CBSN about the impact of the ice shelf split. There are some strange events happening in Antarctica. Images taken by scientists from NASA's Icebridge mission shows a rift in Larsen C, an ice shelf off the Antarctic Peninsula. The rift is 75 miles long, 300 feet wide and one third mile deep. The crack is expected to spread across the entire ice shelf causing a massive separation. . A defecting Russian scientist has surfaced with a mind-bending account of what REALLY occurred when he and his colleagues went missing for five days in a mysterious lake 12,366 feet beneath the Antarctic ice. Dr. Anton Padalka told authorities in Switzerland that the researchers discovered a bizarre and deadly life form dubbed Organism 46-B – a highly intelligent octopus-like creature that claimed the lives of three of the team members. One of the biggest icebergs ever recorded has just broken away from Antarctica. The giant block is estimated to cover an area of roughly 6,000 sq km; that's about a quarter the size of Wales. An US satellite observed the berg on Wednesday while passing over a region known as the Larsen C Ice Shelf. Scientists were expecting it. They'd been following the development of a large crack in Larsen's ice for more than a decade. The rift's propagation had accelerated since 2014, making an imminent calving ever more likely. The more than 200m-thick tabular berg will not move very far, very fast in the short term. But it will need to be monitored. Currents and winds might eventually push it north of the Antarctic where it could become a hazard to shipping. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUo...
Huge Antarctic iceberg finally breaks free After months of ‘hanging by a thread’ a vast iceberg the size of Norfolk has finally broken off Antarctica’s Larsen C Ice Shelf. Around 30 metres of this 190m thick block of ice sits above the sea surface. Scientists now have opportunities to study the stability of the remaining ice shelf, as well as understanding how new biological communities might occupy the newly exposed ocean and underlying seabed areas.
A giant section of an Antarctic ice shelf has finally broken off. The split in the Larsen C ice shelf of the Antarctic peninsula has released an iceberg 5,000 sq km in size – an area about a quarter of the size of Wales. the bottom of the world is a mysterious place. Have you looked at it seriously???? Or is so far downunder that Australia barely thinks about it?
Some interesting claims have come to my attention about a planned expedition to Antarctica in the next 4-5 months. I'm totally skeptical, but I'd be remiss if I didn't share it. If you're around tonight, pop in as I go through the information in a live and interactive format so we all can listen together and see what's up with this expedition to the EDGE! (Notice I did NOT say "END"). You will see a claimed picture of the edge you've not seen before. Antarctica trip 2016, Antarctica Tourism, Antarctica Travel Guide, Antarctica vacations Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Antarctica is a land of extremes: it is the coldest and driest continent on Earth and has the highest average elevation. As the fifth largest continent in the world, Antartica is also the most Southern, overlying the "South Pole". Scarcely touched by humans, the frozen land boasts breathtaking scenery, broken by only a handful of scientific bases and a "permanent" population of scientists numbering only a few thousand. Visitors to Antarctica generally must brave rough sea crossings aboard ice-strengthened vessels, but those who do are rewarded with amazing scenery and tremendous and unique wildlife. De...
Travel video about destination Antarctica. Travelling the Arctic by ship has always been one of those special dream destinations, particularly in the Northern Polar Sea area, the icy world around the North Pole where little life exists. Our expedition begins in Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen from where we are going to travel by cruise ship to the remotest locations of the Arctic. Our ship, the Plancius, was originally the oceanographic research ship of the Dutch monarchy. In Zodiacs - robust inflatable boats - we get our first real sense of the Arctic Ocean. We travel alongside the 14th of July Glacier while the boatman skilfully manoeuvres between fragments of floating icebergs. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. This area was mined un...
Travel video about destination Antartica. Antarctica is situated far from civilization and is one of the last large ecosystems on our planet. Indeed, it is a continent that is still in a primeval state. Seeing its snow covered mountains and beaches covered with wildlife, one becomes even more aware of the amazing beauty of this region yet also the delicate balance of the Antarctic and its wildlife. It is a tranquil natural landscape where thousands of penguin inhabit the bays and hills along with endearing seals living in a habitat of icebergs, glaciers and vast empty spaces of ice. No other continent is as unexplored and undiscovered and for scientists, it continues to possess many enigmas and secrets yet to be revealed. The Antarctic is one of the last paradises on Earth and a marvel of ...
Travel video about destination Antarctic. The Antarctic lies far away from the civilised world and is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, a spectacular wilderness of snow, ice and rock: the last, large eco system on the planet. In Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, we begin our expedition by cruise ship to some of the most remote locations in the Antarctic. The boat makes its way along the coastline of a land of icebergs, glaciers and snow covered islands on the coldest, driest and most deserted continent on Earth. The journey through the Lemaire Channel is one of the most spectacular maritime passages one could ever experience. Everything looks absolutely newly-created. The channel is about fifteen kilometres long and up to a hundred metres wide, with snow covered islands ...

Antarctica: the great white continent and one of the last true wilderness areas on earth – largely unchanged since the early explorers. It’s home to the world’s greatest concentration of wildlife, where penguins, seals and whales are the only permanent residents. Learn more about Quark's Antarctic voyages: http://goo.gl/HOI2hn
Ever wondered what a trip to Antarctica would be like? Got a spare 8mins 36secs spare today? Here's a taster for what it's like to visit the bottom of the World.
Have you ever wondered why you have been sunburnt on a cloudy day? Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can still penetrate the earth's atmosphere. To help understand why you can still get burnt in these (and other) situations, we've produced a short video on why UV levels vary. Produced by Clinuvel http://www.clinuvel.com The total dose of UV radiation reaching the earth's surface, and hence the potential damage to human skin and tissues, varies, depending on many factors. The sun's elevation in the sky depends on the time of the day and year. The shorter the distance that photons of UV radiation need to travel though the earth's atmosphere, the greater the intensity of UV on earth. The altitude of a location also effects UV radiation levels, as the higher a location is above sea level, the sh...
PRODUCED WITH CYBERLINK POWERDIRECTOR 12 Hi in July 2014 my hubby and I went for a sea adventure in the Kingdom of Tonga. This clip is only part of our adventure but one of the most WOW moments of our lives. The Humpback whales travel from the Antarctic to these group of islands to give birth and breed. The Tongans are conservation aware and have measures put in place to protect the welfare of the whales. The charter boats usually take 8 people and you can scout and follow from a distance, pods of whales for hours. Only while the whales are resting are the boats allowed to approach and then from a fair distance a guide jumps into the water to assess if it is safe or not for only 4 snorkelers at a time to approach. There is no duck diving or attempts to touch, but don't be disappointe...

Long before I ever saw
The frost upon your face
I was haunted by your beauty
And it drew me to this place
I felt the chill of mystery
With one foot on your shore
And then and there resolved to go
Where no man had before
CHORUS
Maybe I was snowblind
But it seemed the wind spoke true
And I believed it's stories then
As dreamers sometimes do
In Antarctica
In Antarctica
Who knows what the powers may be
That cause a man to go
Mindless of the dangers
Out across the virgin snow
Seduced by this ambition
I easily forget
The hopeless quest of Shackleton
The dreamlike death of Scott
CHORUS
Maybe I was snowblind
Perhaps it sapped my will
But something of my innocence
Is wandering there still
In Antarctica
In Antarctica
In Antarctica
In Antarctica
