The Practice is an American legal comedy-drama created by David E. Kelley centering on the partners and associates at a Boston law firm. Running for eight seasons on ABC from 1997 to 2004, the show won the Emmy in 1998 and 1999 for Best Drama Series, and spawned the successful and lighter spin-off series Boston Legal, which ran for five more seasons, from 2004 to 2008.
The Practice focused on the law firm of Robert Donnell and Associates (later becoming Donnell, Young, Dole, & Frutt, and ultimately Young, Frutt, & Berluti). Plots typically featured the firm's involvement in various high-profile criminal and civil cases that often mirror current events. Conflict between legal ethics and personal morality was a recurring theme. Some episodes contained light comedy. Kelley claimed that he conceived the show as something of a rebuttal to L.A. Law (for which he wrote) and its romanticized treatment of the American legal system and legal proceedings.
At the start of the series, attorney Bobby Donnell employs associate attorneys Ellenor Frutt, Eugene Young (who joined Bobby's practice seven years earlier), Lindsay Dole, and receptionist/paralegal Rebecca Washington (with whom Bobby started his practice). By the fourth episode, Bobby's friend Jimmy Berluti is hired as an associate. Before that, Jimmy is an attorney working as a loan officer. When he falsifies loan documents to help Bobby's struggling practice, he loses his job, and Bobby hires him.
Dylan McDermott (born Mark Anthony McDermott; October 26, 1961) is an American actor. He is known for his role as lawyer and law firm head Bobby Donnell on the legal drama series The Practice, which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
McDermott is also known for his roles in the first two seasons of American Horror Story, entitled American Horror Story: Murder House and American Horror Story: Asylum, portraying Ben Harmon and Johnny Morgan, respectively. He was also the series lead on the TNT series Dark Blue, portraying the role of Lt. Carter Shaw. He also starred as Detective Jack Larsen on the CBS series Stalker.
McDermott was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, the son of Diane and Richard McDermott. He is of Italian (from his maternal grandfather), Irish, English, and French descent. Diane was 15 and Richard was 17 when McDermott was born; by 1967, the couple had divorced, and Diane and her two children were living with her mother, Avis (Rogers) Marino. On February 9, 1967, Diane was killed. Her death was originally ruled an accident, but police later claimed that evidence they had found would be enough to file murder charges against John Sponza, who had been living with Diane at the time. Sponza told authorities that Diane accidentally shot herself after picking up a gun he had been cleaning. Sponza, who police say had ties to organized crime, was killed in 1972; his body was found in the trunk of a car in a Waltham, Massachusetts grocery store parking lot.

Genres: Documentary,Winner 1998 | ABC, David E. Kelley Productions The creation of executive producer and writer David E. Kelley, The Practice is consistently clever and emotionally gripping. This compelling drama features a group of young Boston trial lawyers who fight for the disenfranchised, and often with each other, while viciously taking on prosecutors in the process. The show benefits from one of network television’s strongest ensemble casts, who adeptly transform Kelley’s vision into a weekly hour of smart repartee. Overseeing the firm is idealistic Bobby Donnell (played by Dylan McDermott), with a cool, Bond-like ruthlessness and a willingness to take on any client ... as long as the money’s good. Girlfriend/partner Lindsay Dole (Kelli Williams) is a rising star in the firm, much to the dismay of E...

This radical reinterpretation of the TONY-winning musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's 1890 play features both deaf and hearing actors in this story about sexual repression and adolescent angst in pre-World War I Germany. Guests include Michael Arden, who conceived and directed this new production of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's 2006 rock musical, which makes the story not only about young people struggling with societal restraints and their burgeoning sexuality, but the additional problem of deaf adolescents in a hearing community unwilling to communicate with them. Actors Alex Boniello, Daniel Durant, Marlee Matlin and Camryn Manheim also appear on our show, along with Jack Jason...

Hannah Higgins (Julia Stiles) is a smart, driven education consultant. She’s so driven she runs for Congress to advance the cause of education reform. Hannah’s not a likable candidate, though; her elitism turns off Boston voters, big-time. Hannah and her business partner, Colleen Pickering (Camryn Manheim) don’t give up easily. For the next election, they recruit a candidate – beer vendor Elliot Doolittle (David Walton) – who is definitely a man-of-the-people. His mother Allie (Frances Fisher) is the definition of "piece of work," as is his sister Bonnie (Georgia Lyman). Elliot – whose thick South Boston accent masks considerable intelligence – is the polar opposite of prim-and-proper Hannah. Hannah takes Elliot on as a modern day Pygmalion-like "project." If she can just teach him to spea...
