Chao Phraya River
The Chao Phraya (Thai: แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา (Pronunciation)) is a major river in Thailand, with its low alluvial plain forming the centre of the country. It flows through Bangkok and then into the Gulf of Thailand.
Etymology
On many old European maps, the river is named Menam or Mae Nam (Thai: แม่น้ำ), Thai for "river". James McCarthy, F.R.G.S., who served as Director-General of the Siamese Government Surveys prior to establishment of the Royal Survey Department, wrote in his account:
H. Warington Smyth, who served as Director of the Department of Mines in Siam from 1891 to 1896, refers to it in his book first published in 1898 as "the Me Nam Chao Phraya." Thai royal and noble title Chao Phraya may be translated as "grand duke." In the English-language media in Thailand, the name is often translated as river of kings.
Geography
The Chao Phraya begins at the confluence of the Ping and Nan rivers at Nakhon Sawan (also called Pak Nam Pho) in Nakhon Sawan Province. After this it flows south for 372 kilometres (231 mi) from the central plains to Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand. In Chainat, the river then splits into the main course and the Tha Chin river, which then flows parallel to the main river and exits in the Gulf of Thailand about 35 kilometres (22 mi) west of Bangkok in Samut Sakhon. In the low alluvial plain which begins below the Chainat Dam, there are many small canals (khlong) which split off from the main river. The khlongs are used for the irrigation of the region's rice paddies.

Bangkok
Bangkok (English pronunciation: /ˈbæŋkɒk/) is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (กรุงเทพมหานคร, pronounced [krūŋ tʰêːp mahǎː nákʰɔ̄ːn]) or simply 
Krung Thep . The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in Central Thailand, and has a population of over 8 million, or 12.6 percent of the country's population. Over 14 million people (22.2 percent) live within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region, making Bangkok an extreme primate city, dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in terms of importance.
Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew in size and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of Siam's (as Thailand used to be known) modernization, during the later 19th century, as the country faced pressures from the West. The city was the centre of Thailand's political struggles, throughout the 20th century, as the country abolished absolute monarchy, adopted constitutional rule and underwent numerous coups and several uprisings. The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact among Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.

The express boat on the Chao Phraya River is a fast and inexpensive mean of transportation in Bangkok. Our hotel, the Navalai River Resort in Khao San is at pier 13. From there we can take the boat to Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin. On the boat ride, we enjoy a slight cooling by the air flow. The express boat also stops at many of Bangkok's attractions. The legendary Menam Chao Phraya is often referred to as, ‘The Royal River,’ and is the largest and also the most important river in Thailand. For several centuries the everyday life of Bangkok, formerly known as Krung Thep, has been closely associated with its canals.The most important sanctuary in the city’s historic royal palace in Bangkok is Wat Phra Keo, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, with its highly visible gilded Chedi. The devotion to Buddhism of the Royal Thai Chakri Dynasty is displayed here in impressive style. One treasure in particular stands out, the Emerald Buddha, the temple’s most sacred object. Boat tours through the Klongs, narrow and extensive canals, are a good way to enjoy the city’s sights. Even though the Klongs are not as important as they were a century or more ago they are an atmospheric reminder of the past. It is not surprising that Bangkok was once referred to as ‘The Venice of the East’. Even though shipping is no longer important on the three hundred and seventy kilometre long river, the Menam Chao Phraya is frequented by hordes of tourists. In addition to numerous historic buildings, the boat passes by many districts in which poverty is rife. Around sixty kilometres north of Bangkok the boat arrives at a natural island in the middle of the Chao Phraya. From the landing stage it is only a few steps to the former royal summer residence of Bang Pa In. A few kilometres upriver is the ruined city of Ayutthaya, the legendary capital of a kingdom that once influenced a huge area of southeast Asia for more than four hundred years. Due to the many historic sites and fascinating sanctuaries that were built along the banks of the Menam Chao Phraya, this great ‘royal’ river has played a vital role in the cultural development of Thailand, a land that even today still exudes the exotic ambience of a golden age.

TRIP TO MAHARAJ PIER:
For the first leg of our trip we went to Maharaj station where we can find the temple of Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace. A tour guide is on board to explain what passengers can see and do in varius stops of the tour. They speak in English and Thai.
Chao Phraya is the life blood of Bangkok. It runs through the Central plains of Thailand downwards to Gulf of Thailand. Importants landmarks lined the riverbanks of Chao Phraya river which can be seen in this tour.
You can sit on the front deck of the ship for better viewing. Maximum of 6 people can stay in the deck at a time. Mix of old and new establishments can be seen along the banks including five star hotels, temples, embasies and churches.
The mirror building River City is the first river shopping mall of Bangkok.
China town is the largest chinese community in Bangkok.
Yodpiman River Walk is a themed mall inspired by the architecture of Thailand's Ayuthaya period. It offers a great view of the river specially during sunset.
The grand palace as seen from the river bank and view from Maharaj Port. Riverboats carry people and cargo along and across the river.
THE EMERALD TEMPLE
Flocks of tourists visits the temple so it can really crowdy.
Phra Si Rattana Chedi, a gold pagoda is said to house Buddha's breastbone. Alongside it the the Mondop and Pantheon.
The Emerald temple or Wat Phra Kaew is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist Temple in Thailand. It houses the emirald Buddha. According to legend the Emerald Buddha came from Thailand and it is said to bring prosperity to the country that houses it. Unfortunately we are not allowed to take videos inside the temple.
THE GRAND PALACE
Grand Palace serves as the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782 when it was built by King Rama I. Several museums are located on the base of the palace showcasing weaponries that were previously used in Siam (which later became Thailand).
TRIP TO THA TIEN PIER:
Our next stop took us to Tha Tien port where the What Pho or Temple of the Rechining Buddha is located.
The temple of Reclining Buddha is considered the first public university of Thailand, teaching children religion, science and literature. The temple is famous for teaching traditional Thai medicine and Thai Massage.
After ringing the gong visitors are encourage to you donate money into the box. Please pay attention to these reminders while visiting the temple.
The statue of the reclining Buddha was built by King Rama III in 1832 to represent the entry of Buddha into Nirvana and the end of all reincarnation. The posture is refered to as 'sihasaiyas' or the posture of sleeping lion. The statue is 15m high and 46m long. The status is made of brick covered with plaster and gold leaves.
For 20 Batt (price may change) you will be given 108 coins to drop in the pots. These 108 coins represent the 108 auspicous character of Buddha and said to bring good fortunes to those who drop the coins in the pots.
We can see the great chedis or mound of Wat Pho Temple.
TRIP TO PAK KLONG TALAD PIER:
We took the boat again this time to Pak Klong Talad Pier to visit the flower market.
This flower market is one of the primary flower market in Bangkok. The market is open 24 hours, it is busiest before dawn when buses and trucks arrive with flowers from nearby provinces.
Here you can see a flower vendor skillfully turns the lotus flower bud into a full bloomed flower by bending and tucking its petals.
During sunset Pak Klong Talad Pier offers a great view of the Sunset. Yodpiman river walk has an open second floor balcony where you can take great photo or vidoes of the river.
GOING HOME:
After spending a fullfilling day in the river we must head back Central pier now.

IN TODAY'S EPISODE :
On day 8 in Bangkok, we’ve experienced our first tourist trap after our tour on the Chao Phraya Express Boat on the Chao Phraya River. We also attempted to visit Chinatown but failed to find it. Finally we booked our tickets to Chiang Mai only to find out that trains on Saturday were sold out and now, we’re leaving tomorrow for Northern thailand!
We ended up frustrated and back at Terminal 21 Mall for some diner before calling it a day.

The express boat on the Chao Phraya River is a fast and inexpensive mean of transportation in Bangkok. Our hotel, the Navalai River Resort in Khao San is at pie...
The express boat on the Chao Phraya River is a fast and inexpensive mean of transportation in Bangkok. Our hotel, the Navalai River Resort in Khao San is at pier 13. From there we can take the boat to Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin.
On the boat ride, we enjoy a slight cooling by the air flow. The express boat also stops at many of Bangkok's attractions.
Bangkok has different express boat lines, marked by different colored flags. Not all express boats stop at all piers. The boats without color and those with the orange flag stop at all important piers.
You can pay the fare right on the boat, but you should have small change ready, e.g. 20 Baht. See route map and fares of Chao Phraya Express Boats
Please note: You also find "Tourist Boats", which stop at the main attractions. On the boats, a guide gives explanations about the route and sights. However, you have to show that you like to exit the boat, otherwise the boat passes by. Moreover, the tourist boats are more expensive.
The first stop after departure from the hotel is the Siriraj hospital, where the deceased king has spent Bhumibol his last years. On the other side of the river is the Grand Palace with Wat Pra Kaeow and Wat Pho. Wat Arun is on the right riverside.
Also worthwhile to see are the flower market Pak Khlong Talat and the Oriental hotel. Already Ernest Hemingway and other writers have stayed in the Mandarin Oriental hotel during their stay in Bangkok.
It is always interesting to watch the maneuvers of the boats at the pier. The diesel exhaust gasses are less pleasant.

Das Express Boot auf dem Chao Phraya River ist ein schnelles und kostengünstige Verkehrsmittel in Bangkok. Unser Hotel, das Navalai River Resort liegt direkt an der Anlegestelle 13. Von dort können wir bequem zur Skytrain Haltestelle Saphan Taksin fahren.
Neben dem Vorzug der leichten Abkühlung durch den Fahrtwind, hält das Express Boot auch an vielen der Sehenswürdigkeiten Bangkoks.
Es gibt unterschiedliche Express Boot Linien, die durch verschieden farbige Flaggen gekennzeichnet sind. Nicht alle Express Boote halten an allen Haltestellen. Die Boote mit der orangen Flagge und diejenigen ohne Farbe halten an allen wichtigen Anlegestellen.
Den Fahrpreis kann man direkt auf dem Boot bezahlen, jedoch sollte man Kleingeld bereithalten, z.B. 20 Baht.

Hinweis: Es gibt auch Touristenboote "Tourist Boats", die ebenfalls an den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten anhalten. Auf den Booten gibt es einen Guide, der Erläuterungen über die Strecke und Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt. Jedoch muss man sich an der Anlegestelle bemerkbar machen, sonst fährt das Boot vorbei. Zudem sind sie teurer.
Die erste Haltestelle nach Abfahrt vom Hotel ist das Siriraj Hospital, in dem der verstorbene König Bhumibol seine letzten Jahre verbracht hat. Auf der anderen Flussseite folgen der große Palast mit dem Wat Pra Kaeow und Wat Pho. Auf der rechten Flussseite befindet sich das Wat Arun.
Weitere lohnenswert zu besuchende Orte sind der Blumenmarkt Pak Khlong Talat, und das Oriental Hotel. Im Manadarin Oriental Hotel haben bereits Ernest Hemingway und eine Reihe weiterer Schriftsteller ihren Bangkok Aufenthalt verbracht.
Es ist immer wieder interessant den Booten beim Manövrieren an der Anlegestelle zuzusehen. Die Diesel Abgase sind weniger erfreulich.

The express boat on the Chao Phraya River is a fast and inexpensive mean of transportation in Bangkok. Our hotel, the Navalai River Resort in Khao San is at pier 13. From there we can take the boat to Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin.
On the boat ride, we enjoy a slight cooling by the air flow. The express boat also stops at many of Bangkok's attractions.
Bangkok has different express boat lines, marked by different colored flags. Not all express boats stop at all piers. The boats without color and those with the orange flag stop at all important piers.
You can pay the fare right on the boat, but you should have small change ready, e.g. 20 Baht. See route map and fares of Chao Phraya Express Boats
Please note: You also find "Tourist Boats", which stop at the main attractions. On the boats, a guide gives explanations about the route and sights. However, you have to show that you like to exit the boat, otherwise the boat passes by. Moreover, the tourist boats are more expensive.
The first stop after departure from the hotel is the Siriraj hospital, where the deceased king has spent Bhumibol his last years. On the other side of the river is the Grand Palace with Wat Pra Kaeow and Wat Pho. Wat Arun is on the right riverside.
Also worthwhile to see are the flower market Pak Khlong Talat and the Oriental hotel. Already Ernest Hemingway and other writers have stayed in the Mandarin Oriental hotel during their stay in Bangkok.
It is always interesting to watch the maneuvers of the boats at the pier. The diesel exhaust gasses are less pleasant.

Das Express Boot auf dem Chao Phraya River ist ein schnelles und kostengünstige Verkehrsmittel in Bangkok. Unser Hotel, das Navalai River Resort liegt direkt an der Anlegestelle 13. Von dort können wir bequem zur Skytrain Haltestelle Saphan Taksin fahren.
Neben dem Vorzug der leichten Abkühlung durch den Fahrtwind, hält das Express Boot auch an vielen der Sehenswürdigkeiten Bangkoks.
Es gibt unterschiedliche Express Boot Linien, die durch verschieden farbige Flaggen gekennzeichnet sind. Nicht alle Express Boote halten an allen Haltestellen. Die Boote mit der orangen Flagge und diejenigen ohne Farbe halten an allen wichtigen Anlegestellen.
Den Fahrpreis kann man direkt auf dem Boot bezahlen, jedoch sollte man Kleingeld bereithalten, z.B. 20 Baht.

Hinweis: Es gibt auch Touristenboote "Tourist Boats", die ebenfalls an den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten anhalten. Auf den Booten gibt es einen Guide, der Erläuterungen über die Strecke und Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt. Jedoch muss man sich an der Anlegestelle bemerkbar machen, sonst fährt das Boot vorbei. Zudem sind sie teurer.
Die erste Haltestelle nach Abfahrt vom Hotel ist das Siriraj Hospital, in dem der verstorbene König Bhumibol seine letzten Jahre verbracht hat. Auf der anderen Flussseite folgen der große Palast mit dem Wat Pra Kaeow und Wat Pho. Auf der rechten Flussseite befindet sich das Wat Arun.
Weitere lohnenswert zu besuchende Orte sind der Blumenmarkt Pak Khlong Talat, und das Oriental Hotel. Im Manadarin Oriental Hotel haben bereits Ernest Hemingway und eine Reihe weiterer Schriftsteller ihren Bangkok Aufenthalt verbracht.
Es ist immer wieder interessant den Booten beim Manövrieren an der Anlegestelle zuzusehen. Die Diesel Abgase sind weniger erfreulich.

The express boat on the Chao Phraya River is a fast and inexpensive mean of transportation in Bangkok. Our hotel, the Navalai River Resort in Khao San is at pier 13. From there we can take the boat to Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin. On the boat ride, we enjoy a slight cooling by the air flow. The express boat also stops at many of Bangkok's attractions. Bangkok has different express boat lines, marked by different colored flags. Not all express boats stop at all piers. The boats without color and those with the orange flag stop at all important piers. You can pay the fare right on the boat, but you should have small change ready, e.g. 20 Baht. The express boat on the Chao Phraya River is a fast and inexpensive mean of transportation in Bangkok. Our hotel, the Navalai River Resort in Khao San is at pier 13. From there we can take the boat to Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin.
On the boat ride, we enjoy a slight cooling by the air flow. The express boat also stops at many of Bangkok's attractions.
Bangkok has different express boat lines, marked by different colored flags. Not all express boats stop at all piers. The boats without color and those with the orange flag stop at all important piers.
You can pay the fare right on the boat, but you should have small change ready, e.g. 20 Baht. See route map and fares of Chao Phraya Express Boats
Please note: You also find "Tourist Boats", which stop at the main attractions. On the boats, a guide gives explanations about the route and sights. However, you have to show that you like to exit the boat, otherwise the boat passes by. Moreover, the tourist boats are more expensive.
The first stop after departure from the hotel is the Siriraj hospital, where the deceased king has spent Bhumibol his last years. On the other side of the river is the Grand Palace with Wat Pra Kaeow and Wat Pho. Wat Arun is on the right riverside.
Also worthwhile to see are the flower market Pak Khlong Talat and the Oriental hotel. Already Ernest Hemingway and other writers have stayed in the Mandarin Oriental hotel during their stay in Bangkok.
