WONDERMINTS - HOUSE OF BLUES (1996)

This rare live performance of the Wondermints was recorded in 1996 at the House Of Blues, Los Angeles. The other acts of the event were The Negro Problem, Cockeyed Ghost, Velouria and The Andersons!.

Special note: I got both performances on a registered website in FLAC format around 2008. I made a custom slim case artwork.

After his two acclaimed solo albums Star (1994) and Wayout Lane (1995), Devin Hill (ex-Dangtrippers frontman) recorded these demos for what would supposed to be his 3rd solo album. As you might know, it was never released.

Australian label Zero Hour has reissued the two Dangtrippers albums, plus the first two Devin Hill albums. All releases include plenty of bonus and rare tracks.

THE SCRUFFS - TAKE A BATH (1997)

Hailing from Australia, The Scruffs were a pretty unorganised and disorderly band and this comes across in their music. This was their debut EP "Take A Bath", the band's rough style of power pop soon enveils a likeable charm. Lead singer Ryan Ellsmore has a nasal twang to his voice that is perfectly suited to this style of music and on their cover of the dB’s classic, "Black & White", he sounds remarkably like Chris Stamey. Another highlight is the surprisingly acoustic song "Slumber". PopMatters
The band also released "The Actual Size" in 2002.

VARIOUS - BEATLESQUE AGAIN (2011)

In 2007, "Meet the Beatlesque!" was my CD attempt at compiling artists who have had a Beatlesque moment, whether consciously or not. As i was writing back then, candidates were plentiful and the 2cd set had not enough space.

But i didn't want to make some kind of a rehash, so on this second collection, i made the decision to not include any bands or artists already featured on "Meet The Beatlesque!". It meant no Rutles, no Spongetones, no Utopia...but some bands who have always worshipped the Fab Four. More than 40 years after the band had split, the Fab Four are more influential than ever.

Maybe the moptops influences are not always obvious, but at least the collection is "Pure Power Pop For Now People".

Today is the beginning of the 5th year of PPC.

4 years is a long, long time in bloglife. When i started this blog, i thought it would last a year or two, but you know what happened, PPC is still alive and well. Until when?, i really don't know....anyway...

As a taster for the new compilation, here's a some pure fun.

Some 25 years ago, i made a tape (i just found it in a box at home) of 33 songs excerpts. At the time it was made with an old tape deck, so no tricks have been used.

Here's the game if you want to play it. Please name all of the 33 Fab Four songs and the first to do so will be the winner. The medley is not really hard to find but this is just fun for the anniversary.

BUCKETFULL OF GROOVIES - THE FLAMIN' GROOVIES STORY (1987)

Bucketfull of Brains was a proper fanzine, one of the very finest, starting back in 1979 under the editorship of Nigel Cross, and occupying the same kind of area as Zigzag at its best.

In 1983, Voxx Records (a subsidiary of BOMP) released a Flamin' Groovies' album named "Bucketful of Brains".

In 1987, the fanzine gave us a special issue "Bucketfull Of Groovies - The Flamin' Groovies Story". It traced the Groovies twenty-two year history. A tribute to a great rock'n'roll band.

A Free flexi disc was included with a then previously unreleased tribute to John L. "Thanks John". The 7" promo was on hard vinyl with a limited edition picture sleeve.

Special note: The 36 page booklet has been scanned in 400dpi, and then printed in PDF. The bookmarks have been added. The FLAC and mp3 (320) files of "Thanks John" have also been included.
