Giant is a 1956 American Warner Color drama film, directed by George Stevens from a screenplay adapted by Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat from Edna Ferber's 1952 novel. The film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean and features Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Mercedes McCambridge, Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Rod Taylor, Elsa Cardenas and Earl Holliman. Giant was the last of James Dean's three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination – he was killed in a car accident before the film was released. Nick Adams was called in to do some voice dubbing for Dean's role.
In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The movie follows a Texas family over a quarter century from the 1920s until after World War II. Themes of discrimination along race, class and gender lines, as well as the role they played in the social evolution of post-war Texas, are prominent.
The year 1956 in film involved some significant events.

Giant or Giants may refer to:
A film, also called a movie, motion picture or photoplay, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations.
The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry.

1956 - George Stevens movie with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean
***Not mine, no copyright intended*** This is, IMO, Dean's greatest scene (along with the birthday scene from EAST OF EDEN), and it's the one he should remembered for. Jett Rink is a great rise-and-fall story, embodied by a 24-year old Dean in his swan song. He would infamously die just 2 weeks after wrapping up his scenes for this HUGE movie.
Resently discovered color slides, and stills from the making of an American movie classic set to the music of Dimitri Tiomkin.
A great of example of visual story telling from George Steven's 1956 epic. Jett Rink (James Dean) walks the boundaries of his small patch of land inside the massive Benedict cattle estate. Filmed almost entirely in long shot, and with no dialogue, the scene conveys the essence of the young Jett's character and his yearning to succeed. The rousing score is by Dimitri Tiomkin.

This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. This could not have been possible without the complete and total encouragement from my wife Tiffany ... you rock! The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. The Leiden International Film Festival recently requested a version of this montage to screen at their festival. This was an extremely humbling request that I was more than happy to accommodate. This is the version the festival received. There are some notable changes, some low resolution clips swapped out but overall, this is the best and FINAL version of this montage. The response to this, both positive and negative has been tremendous. I mention negative because the criticisms helped me to grow as an editor and realize that no matter what, you truly can't please everyone. Thanks so much again everyone for checking out this montage. Shadow of a Giant is an interactive web documentary that tells the story of one Canada’s largest environmental disasters, Yellowknife’s Giant Mine. Buried in collapsing chambers, within the municipal boundary of Yellowknife, and beside the 9th largest lake in the world, sits 237,000 tons of the highly toxic contaminant, arsenic trioxide, a byproduct of the defunct gold mine. The city of Yellowknife and the surrounding aboriginal communities depend on a remediation plan that will refrigerate the arsenic into place, until a permanent solution can be found. Shadow of a Giant tells the story of Giant through the people who live on top of it and call it home. Based on the controversial Edna Ferber novel of the same name, the film, Giant did not shy from strong social-issue themes experienced throughout post-WWII America. George Stevens, its producer and director, purposely gravitated to the drought-ridden community of Marfa for most all of the exterior scenes. TV & Film - You Must Remember This - EP.#69: MGM Stories Part 14 Elizabeth Taylor, The MGM Years Elizabeth Taylor grew up on the MGM lot, spending 18 years as what she referred to as “MGM chattel.” The last four years of that 18 year sentence were arguably the most interesting. From 1956-1960, she made a run of really interesting films including Giant, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Butterfield 8, and she met the “love of her life”, Mike Todd, and turned him into her third husband. When Todd died a year later Liz sought comfort in the arms of Todd’s friend - and Debbie Reynolds’ husband — Eddie Fisher. Taylor capped off the decade by almost dying, winning her first Oscar, and breaking free from MGM to become the highest paid actress up to that time. SUBCRIBE https://goo.gl/VhVTjl Twitter: ...
