This week, Gary and Trevor revisit the Billboard Hot 100 this week in 1996 and count down the chart's top hits, from No. 40 to No. 1. As Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, continues its lock atop the Hot 100 for a 12th week (tying for the longest stay at No. 1 of 2017), 21 years ago Los Del Rio's "Macarena" began its 14-week command, the only rule longer than that of "Despacito" for a predominantly Spanish-language song in the Hot 100's history.

"Macarena" reigned thanks in large part to its Bayside Boys remix, and one of the Bayside Boys – Jammin Johnny Caride – joins the podcast to recount how he sparked the song's transformation from an obscure rumba to pop culture immortality.

Caride, program supervisor for SBS Radio's Miami properties and WXDJ (El Zol 106.7) program director, also muses about having recently interviewed Daddy Yankee. If "Despacito" bests the 14-week No. 1 Hot 100 run of "Macarena," will Caride pass the baton gracefully? "I said, 'Listen, I hope you guys do well, but don't break my record,' " Caride says with a laugh. He adds earnestly, "records are meant to be broken. The fact that we [have held the mark for a Spanish-language No. 1 for] 21 years … it's an honor.

"And, if it's somebody like a Daddy Yankee and a Luis Fonsi and the whole crew that put that song together – I know them all – they're good people."

On the way to No. 1 on the Aug. 3, 1996-dated Hot 100, Gary and Trevor recall 39 other hits, including LeAnn Rimes' breakthrough "Blue"; multiple Alanis Morissette hits at the heights of Jagged Little Pill; and Toni Braxton's first Hot 100 leader that snuck in a week at the top before "Macarena" dominated.
