ALICE COOPER A PARIS TV SHOW (1982)

In 1981 Alice Cooper shot a TV Special in Paris which was aired on french TV n January 1982 . This scarce program has never been released on VHS or even now on DVD. Some unofficial copies (VHS or DVD) are changing hands.

Basically the show is a promo event with tracks from "Flush The Fashion" and "Special Forces" albums plus some vintage tunes from his golden days. The show was recorded in Paris in December 1981 just before the launching of the "Special Forces" european tour. The first part of the broadcast was filmed in several typical and touristic places of Paris : le Sacré-Coeur church, la Rue Saint-Denis, Pigalle, and the Centre Beaubourg. Most of the songs seen here remain thus officially unreleased to this day.

Special note: I transferred the show from a master VHS tape and made a DVD PAL with TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 with DivX Authoring, then i converted the DVD to a XviD4 PAL video (Two pass compression, resolution 640x480). Running Time 46'57. Size: 520 mb. You need all parts to unrar the file.

VARIOUS - CLOSET POP FOLK (1997)

This follow-up to "Closet Pop Freak", a classic document of the indie pop scene in mid-'90s L.A., will probably be most interesting to TNP and Wondermints fans in search of rare tracks. They won't be disappointed by what they find here: from the Wondermints, a pair of minor gems - one faintly countryish ("Runnin' Thru the Nite"), the other typically lush ("Reality Check") - from TNP, a beautiful full-band version of "Smudges" (a solo-acoustic bonus cut on their first album), plus two otherwise unavailable songs. "She's Flying Naked Through the Air" is sheer lilting lunacy, while "Amsterdam" is as willfully obnoxious as the Velvet Underground at their most experimental, but without the aid of electric instruments. Yes, this album is an all-acoustic affair, and it's hard not to be impressed by the sophistication and skill these virtually unknown bands bring to the party. The hooks are subtler than on "Closet Pop Freak", but after a few listens, they sink in just as deeply. Each group gets at least a couple of songs to make an impression and it turns out that some of the more obscure contributors steal the show. The Shambles' "Clouds All Day" is ingeniously constructed and lyrically astute; Dreamworld's delightful "This Time" might as well be the second coming of the Bangles; and Martin Luther Lennon's delicate, whimsical offerings ("Joan of Mark," "Aquarium") never fail to draw a grin. "Closet Pop Folk" is a worthy sequel and a convincing argument for the joys of independent, scene-based music. AMG

BRIAN JONES WAS MURDERED - DEATH OF A POPSTAR (1997)

Don't mix up this great, "sweaty band with the other more alternative and dark band named Brian Jonestown Massacre. This band rocks...hard! This is like a power poppin' Dead Boys and Buzzcocks on tour with the Plimsouls, folks...and, boy is that something! Something totally cool, that is! Sounding like a Great punky power pop band from 1978 (a British one), BJWM lay hard into all 15 trax (+ 1 hidden), full of high energy, high-octane, propeller strummed guitars and sloppy but clean vocals colliding with great frenetic Jam inspired band energy. this band would be touring the country and selling bucketfuls of records in a fairer world. Help the cause of giving power pop a very hip face and plow into this one and put it on at your next party!! Watch the sweat fly! Crucially Highly Recommended. Bruce Brodeen

Number 1 / So Long Now / On It Goes / You Were Mine / Nothing To Do / Remember / I Like You / By Your Side / Na Na Na / Say / So Alone / Lost And Found / 15 Minutes Of Fame / Please / The Last Time / Help! (hidden)

VARIOUS - CLOSET POP FREAK (1996)

If programmers were more interested in craft and wit than glossy production and good looks, this compilation of songs from L.A.'s indie pop scene would have been Now That's What I Call Music! 1996. As it is, TNP have become critics' darlings and the Wondermints have gained some attention as Brian Wilson's back-up group, but otherwise, the mid-'90s surge of melody-conscious, harmony-drenched bands slowed to a trickle. This disc captures the movement in its prime. On first listen, many of the sounds here might seem awfully derivative of the Big B's (Beatles, Beach Boys, Bacharach, Big Star, Badfinger, et al.) and other pop heroes. While it's true that the Wondermints' "Invisible Paint" channels latter-day XTC, and Walter Clevenger ("Angels") clearly has some mid-period Nick Lowe in his record collection, they and all the other artists manage to put their individual stamps on some top-quality material. None of them attempt anything too emotionally intense or challenging (with the exception of Carolyn Edwards' haunting "Secret Monster"), but their lyrics are uniformly clever and specific, tackling subjects that don't often get an airing in mainstream music. The Jigsaw Seen's "Pop Celebrity Interview," for instance, is a brilliantly snide attack on the fawning Hollywood star system ("I have just received a lesson or two about the joys of being you"). Other standouts include Cockeyed Ghost's garage-rocking "Disappear" and Spanish Kitchen's "Flowers of Theory," which will have you singing along to its inscrutable chorus ("You've spent too long in the attic/with your body on automatic") after a single spin. All in all, this album has a great spirit of community (everyone contributes to everyone else's tracks) and more hooks than a meat locker. AMG

DWIGHT TWILLEY - LIVE AT ROCKABILLY'S (1982)

Dwight Twilley became the star of one of the first ever live MTV concerts in a terrific 70-minute live concert that featured Bill Pitcock IV, John Cowsill, and Susan Cowsill, along Randell Kirsch and Tom Fowle (Randell Kirsch and John Cowsill later joined Jeffrey Foskett in The Pranks.) The show was recorded live at Rockabilly's North in Houston, and aired on July 23, 1982. It is hoped that one day there can be either/both a live album and DVD release of this show. Incidentally, if you saw it at the time and wondered why there was only a small audience, the venue for the taping was changed because they found a pole directly in front of the stage at the scheduled venue. So at the last possible minute, it was changed to Rockabilly's North. There was no advertising aside from Twilley's name on the marquee, it was a Sunday show, and frankly, no fans knew it was being taped, so the audience was just kind of the regulars at the club and some folks who were ‘hired' to be the audience. The video show can be ordered at the official Dwight Twilley Web Store. Click Here.

92 DEGREES - MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND (1990)

Hailing from the Illinois area just like their labelmates Material Issue, 92 Degrees released in 1990 this little known mini LP full of catchy power pop hooks produced by the fabulous Adam Schmitt and the late Jay Bennett.

Mike Galassini (vocals/ bass), Steve Steffens (vocals/ guitar) and Dane Svoboda (drums) were later produced by Jeff Murphy of Shoes fame and they released their only full length album in 1995 on Black Vinyl Shoes. 92 Degrees were also featured on the classic Christmas compilation "Yuletunes".

Today, Mike Galassini is playing with the Valley Downs who recorded an incredibly haunting version of The Beatles’ “For No One” (available on IPO Vol 8) for BBC Radio Merseyside in support of its appearance at the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool. They are currently working on their first album.

DWIGHT TWILLEY - MOON SHADOW (1984)

This show, recorded in 1984 for the KBFH, nearly a decade after the success of his first hit single ("I'm On Fire") delivers on the promise that he writes and performs some of the best, intelligent pop music out there. Though no longer billed as the Dwight Twilley Band, he continued to work with DT Band lead guitarist Bill Pitock, whom many feel contributed greatly to the Twilley sound.

Special note: This special 9-song concert edition was recorded for the KBFH and was sent to local radio stations as a promo tape coupled with The Bongos 1983 short edition of the Columbia concert. So, the rip was made from the original promo tape and i did a custom artwork for the blog. You can purchase the full length concert at your local record store. LEE ROBINSON - TOTALLY LEE (2002)

Lee Kenneth Robinson played with various bands, of which the Barracudas and the Fortunate Sons were the most famous in the power pop world. Lee Robinson joined Robin Wills and Steve Robinson in the Fortunate Sons just after the Barracudas had disbanded. Though originally a drummer, Lee Robinson had some song writing skills and was also a great singer (he was the lead singer on the Fortunate Sons "Burning". Then, he fronted A-10 and relocated to Madrid performing with The Sin City Six. He died in 2001.

LIQUOR GIANTS - HERE (1994)

After playing mutant swamp-blues-rockabilly guitar with the Gun Club in the early '80s, Ward Dotson embarked on a less contrived musical course as guitarist, main writer and de facto leader of the Pontiac Brothers. Dotson subsequently formed the Liquor Giants. "You're Always Welcome" (1992) (aka "America's #1 Recording Artists" in Japan) was a dynamic debut. "Here" is nearly as good, with one of many highlights provided by "Everybody's a Genius," a tart commentary on indie-scene backbiting from someone who's obviously been there.

Songs
67 East 2nd Street / An Arm Around You Too / Stick Around / Now That / Disgusted / This Paper Cup / Something's Always On Fire / Everybody's a Genius / I Don't Mind / Play Along / Here's to You / Hold My Hand / Wanna Belong / Happy New Year

TRIBUTE TO THE FAB FOUR - SGT PEPPER (2009)

Penultimate volume of the "Fab Four Experience". No need to introduce one of the most famous rock albums of all-time. But i can't help myself to quote Bob Segarini : "I loved The Beatles up to Sgt Pepper, then they ruined pop what could be forever, but it's never too late to hope..."(Gotta Have Pop - 1978)

Special note: The cover version of "When I'm 64" could sound weird to a lot of readers, as i made a special mix with the Julian Lennon version recorded in 2002 for an advertisement and the Fab Four's Yellow Submarine mix. For your info, i'm not the first one who ever did this, but i made it myself.

YUKIO YUNG - (MOSTLY) WATER (1996)

In 1986, Yukio Yung (real name Terry Burrows) met Alan Jenkins, leader of The Deep Freeze Mice, and together they formed The Chrysanthemums, with Burrows as lead singer and keyboard player until 1991. A cult psychedelic art pop band, they released three albums and four EPs.
After the Chrysanthemums disbanded, Burrows released new solo Yukio Yung material, commencing with 1993's LP "Art Pop Stupidity" and CD "A Brainless Deconstruction of the Popular Song". Over the next few years he released a single and four EPs. In 1996, Burrows rejoined with his ex-Chrysanthemums bandmate Martin Howells to form a new version of that group, renamed with the visual pun Chrys&themums to distinguish it from the original lineup.
Terry Burrows has been responsible for over 40 commercial releases in a wide variety of styles and under many different aliases. His solo or group projects have included: Yukio Yung; The Chrysanthemums; Jung Analysts; Tonesucker; Push-Button Pleasure; The Yung & Moore Show (with R.Stevie Moore); Test Tone Five; and The Aspergillum. He also produces bespoke music for TV and film. Terry Burrows website.
