Cairo
Cairo (/ˈkaɪroʊ/ KYE-roh; Arabic: القاهرة, al-Qāhirah) is the capital and largest city of Egypt. Greater Cairo is the largest metropolitan area in the Middle East and the Arab world, and 15th-largest in the world, and is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area. Located near the Nile Delta, modern Cairo was founded in 969 CE by Jawhar al-Siqilli ("the Sicilian") of the Fatimid dynasty, but the land composing the present-day city was the site of ancient national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Cairo has long been a center of the region's political and cultural life, and is nicknamed "the city of a thousand minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture.
Egyptians today often refer to Cairo as Maṣr ([mɑsˤɾ], مصر), the Egyptian Arabic pronunciation of the name for Egypt itself, emphasizing the city's continued role in Egyptian influence. Its official name is القاهرة al-Qāhirah , means literally: "the Defeater", in reference to the fact that the planet Mars ("Al Najm Al Qahir") was rising at the time when the city was founded as well as, "the Vanquisher"; "the Conqueror"; Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [elqɑ(ː)ˈheɾɑ], "the Defeater" or, " "the Victorious" (al-Qahira) in reference to the much awaited Caliph al-Mu'izz li Din Allah who arrived from the old Fatimid Ifriqiyan capital of Mahdia in 973 to the city. The Egyptian name for Cairo is said to be: Khere-Ohe, meaning: "The Place of Combat", supposedly, in reference to a battle which took place between the Gods Seth and Horus. Sometimes the city is informally also referred to as كايرو Kayro [ˈkæjɾo]. It is also called Umm ad-Dunya, meaning "the mother of the world".

Magic carpet
A magic carpet, also called a flying carpet, is a legendary carpet that can be used to transport humans who are on it instantaneously or quickly to their destination.
In literature
One of the stories in the One Thousand and One Nights relates how Prince Husain, the eldest son of Sultan of the Indies, travels to Bisnagar (Vijayanagara) in India and buys a magic carpet This carpet is described as follows: "Whoever sitteth on this carpet and willeth in thought to be taken up and set down upon other site will, in the twinkling of an eye, be borne thither, be that place nearhand or distant many a day's journey and difficult to reach." The literary traditions of several other cultures also feature magical carpets, in most cases literally flying rather than instantly transporting their passengers from place to place.
Solomon's carpet was reportedly made of green silk with a golden weft, sixty miles long and sixty miles wide: "when Solomon sat upon the carpet he was caught up by the wind, and sailed through the air so quickly that he breakfasted at Damascus and supped in Media." The wind followed Solomon's commands, and ensured the carpet would go to the proper destination; when Solomon was proud, for his greatness and many accomplishments, the carpet gave a shake and 40,000 fell to their deaths. The carpet was shielded from the sun by a canopy of birds. In Shaikh Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Tadifi al-Hanbali's book of wonders, Qala'id-al-Jawahir ("Necklaces of Gems"), Shaikh Abdul-Qadir Gilani walks on the water of the River Tigris, then an enormous prayer rug (sajjada) appears in the sky above, "as if it were the flying carpet of Solomon [bisat Sulaiman]".

Quadro Nuevo
Quadro Nuevo is a German acoustic quartet which was founded in 1996 and can be categorized as World Music and Jazz. The band is composed of Robert Wolf, Mulo Francel, D.D. Lowka and Andreas Hinterseher (original Heinz-Ludger Jeromine).
Within the last decade the band played about 1500 concerts all over the world and is with its numerous awards and Chart Positions among the internationally most successful German Jazz Bands.
Their style is a composition of (cit. Quadro Nuevo) "Tango, Valse Musette, Flamenco, lovely dedusted filmmusic and an almost faded Italy".

This video captures some high points of an Overseas Adventure Travel trip to Egypt (November 3-15, 2010). Most people in our group flew EgyptAir from New York to Cairo. The airline was a pleasant surprise. Many pilgrims flew with us to Cairo and were starting their trip for Haj, a trip of a life time for devout Muslims. They would continue on to Mecca. It was interesting talking to these gentle people about their faith and how it plays such a central point in their lives. Islam and its facets would be a topic of discovery for many on the trip. We found some men with dark marks on their fore heads caused by touching their heads to the ground five times a day during their prayers. These marks are considered signs of piety and devotion. Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Due to all the negative media coverage in the middle east, countries in the area are heavily affected by the dwindling number of tourists. I took this opportunity to visit Egypt, Jordan and Turkey for 2 months. This video is the first part of the video where I spent 10 days in Egypt traveling alone from Cairo, Aswan to Luxor.
Even though, the number of tourists in Egypt has gone down considerably after the revolution, the country still hold one of the most historic sites and ruins of an Ancient civilization the ruled the area, the Ancient Egypt. After all, this is the only Egypt we have in the world, so don't let the media stop you from coming to this place.

Once on the bus, Mimo (short for Mohammed), our tour guide, introduced us to another Mohammed, our very own man in black armed security guard; and our driver, I can’t remember his name...but to make the trifecta we will assume that he is Mohammed as well.
Even though we were travelling privately we were still required to join the Princess convoy out of Port Said for the journey to Cairo. It was a three hour drive but I think we spent more time in the traffic in Cairo than on the motorways to get there. Here is another country where they drive with no direct rules, just an understanding on what the cars are going to do around you. If you drive up behind someone you just toot to let them know to get out of the way.

This video captures some high points of an Overseas Adventure Travel trip to Egypt (November 3-15, 2010). Most people in our group flew EgyptAir from New York to Cairo. The airline was a pleasant surprise.
Many pilgrims flew with us to Cairo and were starting their trip for Haj, a trip of a life time for devout Muslims. They would continue on to Mecca. It was interesting talking to these gentle people about their faith and how it plays such a central point in their lives.
Islam and its facets would be a topic of discovery for many on the trip. We found some men with dark marks on their fore heads caused by touching their heads to the ground five times a day during their prayers. These marks are considered signs of piety and devotion.
In Cairo we saw the Pyramids and the Sphinx. We visited a Coptic church, a mosque, and a synagogue. Another high point was Cairo's Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. We found it interesting that many Egyptians drive at night with no lights, believing that it saves their batteries. This custom seems to be even more common outside of Cairo.
From Cairo we flew to Aswan and saw the famous dam. We continued on to Philae Temple and to Abu Simbel, two of Egypt's most famous sites. We sailed the Nile on faluccas, Egyptian sailing vessels that have not changed in many hundreds of years.
A camel ride to St. Simeon's Monastery was followed by a visit to a Nubian family for tea. Later in the trip we would visit a home of a farmer. We boarded the MS Royal Rhapsody in Aswan for a wonderful cruise up the Nile, stopping at the Greco-Roman temple at Kom Ombo and Edfu. One night most of the tour group dressed up in classic Egyptian clothing for a party with dancing and traditional Egyptian food.
The cruise ended in Luxor and most of us hated to leave the boat. The vistas of desert and lush growth were breathtaking. At Luxor, the old Thebes, we visited the beautiful temples of Luxor, and Karnak. Across the Nile awaited the Valley of the Kings with tombs of King Tut, Ramses II, and many other pharaohs. Queen Hapshepsut's timeless temple was nearby.
One night we traveled around Luxor by carriage and visited the markets as people did last minute shopping for the Haj Feast that was to follow the next day.
At 5:00am most of the tour gathered to cross the Nile to the West Bank for a balloon flight over the Valley of the Kings. The weather was clear that day and as the balloons soared at dawn we could hear the Mullahs and their congregations in prayer.
We flew back to Cairo before either going home or continuing on to Jordan. Most of our party continued to Jordan.
The trip itself was an exercise in sensory overload. Security teams armed with sub-machine guns were part of our tours and were on our bus every day. Everywhere we went security was at a high level. Many places had scanners like those found at airports. These places included hotels, tourist sites, and many restaurants. Despite this reality, Egyptians we met were welcoming and warm people.
Street vendors everywhere were assertive and hard to evade or escape once they approached you. You learned never to make eye contact. While haggling for price is expected, some never took no for a final answer. Once you became used to it such behavior seemed normal and somewhat humorous.
Everything was new, but very old at the same time. New sounds, sights, smells, and tastes bombarded us day by day. The culture shock was somewhat tiring, but exhilarating. It caused you to reevaluate what you thought you knew about Egypt, its culture, and its people.
Everyone felt our tour guide, Mona, was an exceptional person and a wonderful tour guide -- probably the best any of us had in our varied travels. We will always remember her and the wonderful time in Egypt.

The vast, isolated country of Egypt in the North Eastern corner of African is central to studies of the world’s oldest civilisations. Traveller Megan McCormick begins her journey in the sprawling city of Cairo where the most impressive monuments and fascinating sights and relics can be discovered in the old city.
The Bazaar of Khan al-Khalili is a huge market, which has been open for business since the middle ages. Megan learns about herbal medicine from a “doctor’s” clinic and sees craftsmen in the workshops at the bazaar. From here she pays a visit to the mosque at Ibn Tulun; although the site has been Islamic since the mosque was built in the 9th century AD, according to legend this was the spot where Noah’s Arc came to rest and where Moses confronted Pharaoh’s magicians.
No one comes to Cairo without seeing it’s most famous landmark, the Great Pyramids at Giza, just outside the city. They were built as the tombs of three Pharaohs, the first in a string of pyramids running all the way down the Nile to the Sudanese border. Evidence suggests that the first pyramid took hundreds of thousands of workers thirty years to construct.
Egypt was one of the earliest places where Christianity took hold and the monastery at St Antony’s, three hours to the south east of Cairo, was reputedly the very first monastery. St Antony lived as a hermit in a nearby cave for twenty years. Father Lazarus, a former university lecturer who emulates St Antony’s way of life, tells Megan why he chose to live on this mountain saturated with prayer.
En route to Siwa in Egypt’s Western Desert Megan stops at the war cemetery at El Alamein, commemorating the soldiers who fought in World War Two. Tens of thousands of young men on both sides died in the Battle of El Alamein. When she arrives in the remote oasis town of Siwa, close to the Lybian border, Megan is invited to a Siwan stag celebration. The laid-back town is famous for its dates and olives and the town centre is dominated by the crumbling remains of the 13th century fortress of Shali.
From Siwa Megan embarks on a five day desert trek to Luxor. On the way she pays a visit to the oasis town of Bahariyya, where every traveller is greeted personally by the mayor. She joins a family celebrating sebuwa, a ceremony held a week after the birth of a new baby. The following day the group heads for the historic ruins of Bagawat. Here there are 263 Coptic tombs dating back 1800 years, some of which have biblical murals painted on the interior.
Megan is relieved to arrive in Luxor at last. The West Bank of Luxor is known as Monument Valley and it’s here that you’ll find the famous Valley of the Kings. The government has invested heavily in security at major sites since the Shi’ite massacre of fifty people at Luxor in November 1997 which cast a cloud over the Egyptian tourist trade. Nevertheless Megan finds an Egyptologist to guide her around the working archaeological site and to teach her about burial practice. The next morning she has an early a breathtaking view of the entire site – by hot-air balloon.
For the final leg of her trip Megan takes a short flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel, the gateway to southern Egypt. It’s here that Ramses had his sun temple built over three thousand years ago. Four massive statues over sixty five feet tall impress upon the traveller the ruler’s strength and divinity. The temple was moved block by block to a man made mountain sixty five metres higher than its original site so as to prevent submersion by the newly created Lake Nasser.

On another dimension, Mona is the Director of Heya Hayah “L’Eve Institute – LEI”, a social enterprise focused on improving the quality of life for the family in general and the feminine entity in specific. As part of LEI’s community mission, Mona provides volunteer Development Training for various NGOs and Associations on Body, Mind, Heart and Soul topics.
