Cadaqués (Catalan pronunciation: [kəðəˈkes]) is a town in the Alt Empordà comarca, in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It is on a bay in the middle of the Cap de Creus peninsula, near Cap de Creus cape, on the Costa Brava of the Mediterranean. It is only a two-and-a-quarter hour drive from Barcelona, and thus it is very accessible and not only attracts tourists but people who want a second home for weekends and summers. In 2002, Cadaqués had an official population of 2,612, but up to ten times as many people can live in the town during the peak of the summer tourism season.
Cadaqués has a special place in art history. Commanding charcoals, by local artist Eliseu Meifrèn, of the 19th century Cadaqués beleaguered by a winter tramontane, can be seen at the Cadaqués museum. Fren was the first modern artist to live in Cadaqués and gave the town many of his works and a marble top table on which he sketched many of its turn-of-the-century fishermen.
Salvador Dalí often visited Cadaqués in his childhood, and later kept a home in Port Lligat, a small village on a bay next to the town. A summer holiday here in 1916, spent with the family of Ramon Pichot is seen as especially important to Dalí's artistic career. Other notable artists, including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Richard Hamilton, Albert Ràfols-Casamada, Antoni Pitxot, Henri-François Rey, Melina Mercouri and Maurice Boitel also spent time here. Cadaqués is mentioned in the story "Tramontana" by Gabriel García Márquez.
The Costa Brava (Catalan: [ˈkɔstə ˈβɾaβə], Spanish: [ˈkosta ˈβɾaβa]; "Wild" or "Rough Coast") is a coastal region of northeastern Spain, consisting of Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà and Selva, in the province of Girona. The Costa Brava stretches from Blanes, 60 km (37 mi) northeast of Barcelona, to the French border. In the 1950s, the Costa Brava was identified by the Spanish government and local entrepreneurs as being suitable for substantial development as a holiday destination, mainly for package holiday tourists from Northern Europe and especially the United Kingdom and France. The combination of a very good summer climate, nature, excellent beaches and a favourable foreign exchange rate, which made Spain a relatively inexpensive tourist destination, was exploited by the construction of large numbers of hotels and apartments in such seaside resorts as Blanes, Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar. Tourism rapidly took over from fishing as the principal business of the area.
The coast was named Costa Brava by Ferran Agulló (in Catalan, Ferran Agulló i Vidal) in an article published in the Catalan newspaper La Veu de Catalunya in September 1908. Agulló, a journalist born in Girona, referred to the rugged landscape of the Mediterranean coast which runs from the River Tordera, near Blanes, to Banyuls with the name Costa Brava.Costa is the Catalan and Spanish word for 'coast', while Brava means 'rugged' or 'wild'. This term was officially recognized and promoted in the 1960s as it was deemed suitable to promote tourism in the region. Before Costa Brava became the official name, other names were suggested, such as Costa Grega (Greek Coast), Costa del Corall (Coral Coast), Costa Serena (Serene Coast), Costes de Llevant (Levant Coasts) or Marina de l'Empordà (Empordà Marine).
Facing the Mediterranean Sea at the head of a crystal clear bay, Cadaqués was a favourite of both Picasso and Salvador Dalí who were drawn to the area's incredible light and sea breezes. Cadaques remains a favourite spot for artists and is popular with weekenders from Barcelona and visitors from farther afield. The town has been developed carefully over the years and retains its charm. Most who discover it return again and again.

Take a tour of Coastal Village of Cadaqués in Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. One of the most famous fishing villages of Catalonia is the small town of Cadaques. The harbor here is filled every day with the boats of Spanish fishermen. In addition to the fishing industry, Cadaques enjoys the business of its many annual visitors. Although it's a small village, it has many beautiful houses and store fronts. Between the painted doors and the bright flowers, Cadaques is a very colorful place for pedestrians. One of the village's main attractions is the home of the famous surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. The climate is mild and Cadaques is often considered one of the loveliest villages in Catalonia.

Visit: http://www.brendansadventures.com/travel-photography-workshops/ I'm on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/brendanvanson As a way of trying to do some different style episodes, I'm starting a thing I'm calling 4K Friday. Although, I know that by the time I get edited and this stuff online it's like Monday. But, the idea is obvious. I want to shoot some 4K travel vlogs. I started by shooting this 4k video in Cadaques, Costa Brava. The idea here is that these vlogs I shoot in 4k will be less about me, and more about the destination. So, although I do talk a lot in this episode, look for the 4k videos in the future to have a lot less of me, and more of the destination being features. Like, in this video, the footage is from Cadaques, Cos...
