Flanders (Dutch: Vlaanderen [ˈvlaːndərə(n)], French: Flandre) today normally refers to the Dutch-speaking northern portion of Belgium. It is one of the communities, regions and language areas of Belgium. The demonym associated with Flanders is Fleming, while the corresponding adjective is Flemish. The official capital of Flanders is Brussels, although Brussels itself has an independent regional government, and the government of Flanders only oversees some cultural aspects of Brussels life.
Historically, the name referred to the County of Flanders, which around 1000 CE stretched from the Strait of Dover to the Scheldt estuary. The only parts of historical Flanders that lay within modern-day Flanders are the provinces West Flanders and East Flanders. Nevertheless, during the 19th and 20th centuries it became increasingly commonplace to use the term "Flanders" to refer to the entire Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, stretching all the way to the River Maas. In accordance with late 20th century Belgian state reforms the area was made into two political entities: the "Flemish Community" (Dutch: Vlaamse Gemeenschap) and the "Flemish Region" (Dutch: Vlaams Gewest). These entities were merged, although geographically the Flemish Community, which has a broader cultural mandate, covers Brussels, whereas the Flemish Region does not.

Belgium (i/ˈbɛldʒəm/; Dutch: België [ˈbɛlɣijə]; French: Belgique [bɛlʒik]; German: Belgien [ˈbɛlɡiən]), officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a sovereign state in Western Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts several of the EU's official seats and as well as the headquarters of many major international organizations such as NATO. Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres (11,787 sq mi) and has a population of about 11 million people.
Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups: the Dutch-speaking, mostly Flemish community, which constitutes about 59% of the population, and the French-speaking, mostly Walloon population, which comprises 41% of all Belgians. Additionally, there is a small group of German-speakers who live in the East Cantons located around the High Fens area, and bordering Germany.
Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region. A German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia. Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political conflicts are reflected in its political history and complex system of government.

Now for our Europinion segment we go to Belgium. After the latest round of elections held there in June, negotiations on forming a Belgian government have stranded because of ongoing tensions between French speaking and Dutch speaking politicians. Some French-speaking Wallonian politicians have already stated that separating Belgium into an independent Flanders and Wallonia might be the only way to solve the problem. We went to the city of St. Truiden and asked people on the streets for their opinion. "I think that would be a good idea. Then all that fighting would be over." "I just read an article about it. I'm not in favor. I still feel Belgian." "It'll have its positive and negative sides for the Flemish, as well as for the people of Wallonia." "That's a good idea. They...
Under Belgium's federal system of government, responsibility for education policy lies with its three linguistic communities, the Dutch-speaking Flemish community, the French-speaking community and the German-speaking community. The regional government of Flanders, combining both regional and community powers, oversees an education system that is among the world's top performers.

The Koppenberg is a famous climb featured in the world's biggest one day cycling event, The Tour of Flanders. It is far from the finish of the race, but its very steep gradient, narrow profile, and wet cobblestones make it a very taxing climb for even the best professionals. I rode a 50 mile loop around Flanders, which is not a long distance, but these climbs really take it out of you: I felt like I'd ridden 100 miles. Of the 25 climbs I did in Belgium and Holland, this one is my 4th hardest.

The 2016 Tour of Flanders was a one-day classic cycling race that took place in Belgium on Sunday 3 April 2016. It was the 100th edition of the Tour of Flanders; it was the eighth event of the UCI World Tour and the third of the cobbled one-day classics.[1] It was the second Monument race of the 2016 cycling season. The race started in Bruges and finished in Oudenaarde. The total distance was 255 kilometres (158 mi), covering 18 categorized climbs and seven flat cobblestoned sectors. The principal favourites for the overall victory were Fabian Cancellara (Trek–Segafredo), Tom Boonen (Etixx–Quick-Step) and Peter Sagan (Tinkoff). After several riders had abandoned the race due to crashes and injuries, the decisive break was formed with 30 kilometres (19 mi) to go by Sagan, Michał Kwiatkows...
Flanders (Dutch: Vlaanderen , French: Flandre) today normally refers to the Dutch speaking northern portion of Belgium. It is one of the regions and communities of Belgium. Historically, the name referred to a region located in the north-western part of present-day Belgium and adjacent parts of France and the Netherlands. Both in the historical and the contemporary meaning, the demonym associated with Flanders is Fleming, while the corresponding adjective is Flemish. Brussels is the capital of Flanders, though it is also autonomous and only partially under Flanders' jurisdiction. Over the course of history, the geographical territory that was called "Flanders" has varied, and usage in English was at most periods much vaguer and imprecise than in the region itself. From around 1000 AD, Fla...
April 2008 The nation's politicians are bickering over an issue that's plagued the country since its creation in 1830: how do you reconcile the French speaking Walloons in the south and the Dutch speaking Flemish in the north? How can you have national co-operation when the people who make up the nation don't share a common language let alone read the same newspapers, watch the same television or vote for the same politicians? Asked "What is Belgium actually for?" those on the Flemish far right have a devastating answer. "Belgium in my opinion is an occupier, because basically it was created to let the French culture dominate the Dutch culture, so in my opinion it's an occupier." That's the opinion of the new leader of the Flemish far-right, Bruno Valkeniers. The conflict even intru...
History The Ronde van Vlaanderen was founded in 1913 by Karel van Wijnendaele and is known as the most important flemish classic race. The race was always characterized by cobblestone and short but steep climbs. Achiel Buysse, Fiorenzo Magni and Eric Leman each won the race 3 times. Johan Museeuw (2 wins) can add himself to these famous Flandriens. Analysis of the Route Compared to previous version of the Ronde van Vlaanderen, the route is changed quite a bit. The main modification is that the Oude Kwaremont is closer now to the finish, 60 km (previously 110 km). Between the Oude Kwaremont and the finish there are 8 more hills to conquer : Paterberg, Kortekeer, Taaienberg, Steneberg, Berendries, Tenbosse, Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg. With nine climbs in the last 60 km, the final...
