Doctors say euthanasia gives terminally ill patients experiencing constant and unbearable suffering a practical and humane way to die peacefully. But even in a country with far-reaching acceptance, controversy still remains.

In early May, a law took effect in the Netherlands that allows owners of legalized cannabis cafés in the southern Netherlands to sell the substance only to Dutch residents, no longer to foreigners. Now Belgium's first cannabis club is enjoying a membership boom.
The possession of marijuana was decriminalized in Belgium over a decade ago, a ruling that sparked the creation of the Cannabis Social Club "Trekt Uw Plant" ("Grow Your Plant"). The club has established a collective cannabis plantation, where each member is allowed to harvest several times a year. Both recreational and medical marijuana users praise the model as a way of avoiding the illegal drug trade - but the club remains a source of controversy.

24 & ready to die is the tragic case of Emily, a young Belgian woman granted the right to a doctor’s help to end her own life because of her persistent, severe depression.
Belgium and the Netherlands are the only countries which permit doctor-assisted dying for those experiencing unbearable mental suffering.
Several American states allow doctor-assisted dying for the terminally ill, including, from next year, California.
Majorities in 13 of the 15 countries polled by The Economist and IPSOS MORI in June support doctor-assisted dying.
The Economist has championed doctor-assisted dying in articles and editorials since the 1990s, including most recently a cover story in June this year. The Economist ran a video advert in London in September and Berlin asking: “Could you live a life like this?” to encourage people to start talking about the right to die.
Support for doctor-assisted dying is growing globally. Bills have recently been debated in Britain and Germany, and a ruling in Canada’s Supreme Court means that country will soon have legal doctor-assisted dying too. California’s governor signed an assisted-dying bill into law in October.
A recent poll by Ipsos-MORI for The Economist found majorities in support of doctor-assisted dying laws in 13 out of 15 countries surveyed—including the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and Germany. But only in Belgium and the Netherlands were majorities in favour of allowing doctor-assisted dying in cases of unbearable suffering that is mental, rather than physical.
The Economist supports the introduction of legalised doctor-assisted dying around the world. Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, says: “For The Economist, the case for allowing doctor-assisted dying relies on personal choice and individual autonomy. Our liberal values and respect for human dignity mean that for this paper, doctor-assisted dying is a cause worth championing.”

With a civil law system based on the French civil code, property rights and trade freedom seem to be right in line in comparison with the united states. Belgium's transparency rank is at 15. Their transparency score is currently 77, but that number has been increasing annually over the last few years. However, voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence and terrorism, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption have been on a decline. Especially with the recent appearance of ISIS in the Brussels area.

Additionally, there is a small group of German-speakers who live in the East Cantons located around the High Fens area, and bordering Germany.
Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region. A German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia. Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political conflicts are reflected in its political history and complex system of government.

The Economist

Dr. Mortier was invited by the Coalition of Physicians for Social Justice. http://coalitionmd.org He shared the story of the loss of his mother, to Euthanasia. During his visit, the Coalition interviewed him in the following videos on his personal story and what he has witnessed as a Belgian in a society where euthanasia has been legal for 10 years. In this very personal interview, Dr Mortier candidly discuses his mother's own passing - she was taken by euthanasia - the cause, as he discusses, not due to a terminal illness, but simply by her choice. Tom's mother was suffering from depression. In Belgium, with the current laws, this is possible... Tom goes on to express that this issue is not about the right to die for the terminally ill, but rather about the doors that this opens, like it has in Belgium, where this likely started to protect doctors from being legally prosecuted in cases where people were at end of life and in severe pain, but has ended up creating situations where people for many reasons, other than terminal illness, are turning to euthanasia, and dying as a result. BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgium has received proposals from Britain and the United States to replace its ageing fleet of fighter jets, while a French proposal that was not part of the tender process will be looked at separately, Belgium’s defense minister said. Belgium invited government-led proposals in March for the replacement of its fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16 planes with 34 new fighters, in a deal that could be worth more than 3.5 billion euros ($4.2 billion). Last month, France proposed a wide-ranging military deal with Belgium instead of responding to the tender. The deal goes beyond the terms of the tender whilst including the sale of Rafale fighter jets. While the French offer would be discussed by the government, it could open Belgium to criticism that it was not treating candidates equally, Vandeput said. “To be very clear, the French offer is not part of the contest,” minister Steven Vandeput told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday. Offers from the U.S. for Lockheed F-35 Lightning II planes and British offers for the Eurofighter Typhoon did meet the tender rules, the minister added. A spokeswoman for the defense ministry said the French proposal was being checked by its legal services and forwarded to the government which would decide at a later stage whether or not to respond. The Rafales are made by France’s Dassault Aviation which declined to comment on Thursday. Boeing pulled out of the race last spring. The French government said that its proposal was in line with Belgium’s request. “We have made an extended proposal which is legally relevant and we are waiting for a proposal by the Belgian government,” a spokeswoman for the French defense ministry said. Belgium will make a decision on which jet fighter to pick next year. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld Belgium’s ban on the Islamic full-face veil on Tuesday (July 11), rejecting a legal challenge by two Muslim women wearing the niqab. The court in Strasbourg, France found that the 2011 Belgian law banning clothing that partly or totally covers the face did not violate the right to respect for private and family life nor freedom of religion, and that it did not disproportionately discriminate the Muslim community. Now Belgium's first cannabis club is enjoying a membership boom. The possession of marijuana was decriminalized in Belgium over a decade ago, a ruling that sparked the creation of the Cannabis Social Club "Trekt Uw Plant" ("Grow Your Plant"). The club has established a collective cannabis plantation, where each member is allowed to harvest several times a year. Both recreational and medical marijuana users praise the model as a way of avoiding the illegal drug trade - but the club remains a source of controversy.

Legal revision. I separated legal from political and added transitions. I enlarged the individual graphs instead of keeping them clumped together. I kept the script the same. With a civil law system based on the French civil code, property rights and trade freedom seem to be right in line in comparison with the united states. Belgium's transparency rank is at 15. Their transparency score is currently 77, but that number has been increasing annually over the last few years. However, voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence and terrorism, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption have been on a decline. Especially with the recent appearance of ISIS in the Brussels area.

With a civil law system based on the French civil code, property rights and trade freedom seem to be right in line in comparison with the united states. Belgium's transparency rank is at 15. Their transparency score is currently 77, but that number has been increasing annually over the last few years. However, voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence and terrorism, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption have been on a decline. Especially with the recent appearance of ISIS in the Brussels area.

Similar to Amsterdam's De Wallen, expect to window shop, as young scantily clad women in Antwerp also peddle their wares behind storefront glass.
The city's best brothel, Villa Tinto, has been dubbed “Europe's most high-tech bordello” and boasts 51 suites, safes to store cash, a biometric scanner to identify workers, an onsite police station, a panic button under the beds for the women's safety, and a control room to oversee the operation. There are also massage parlors and strip clubs that offer sex shows, where, for example, you can pay to watch a monkey slap a naked woman. We're just reporting the facts.
What it’ll cost: Full-release massages start at about $66 (€60). Or, for just under $2.20 (€2), you get about 90 seconds of action in one of the peep shows. Window prostitutes start at the standard rate of $55 (€50) for 15 minutes, although you can pay more for extras like kissing and not having to use a condom. Bonus STDs, however -- totally free!

Dr. Tom Mortier (PhD) lecturer of chemistry at University College Leuven in Belgium, critiqued the Belgian euthanasia law at a press conference in Montreal, Quebec, where there is currently a law under review similar to the one in Belgium, Blll 52.

He shared the story of the loss of his mother, to Euthanasia.
During his visit, the Coalition interviewed him in the following videos on his personal story and what he has witnessed as a Belgian in a society where euthanasia has been legal for 10 years.
In this very personal interview, Dr Mortier candidly discuses his mother's own passing - she was taken by euthanasia - the cause, as he discusses, not due to a terminal illness, but simply by her choice. Tom's mother was suffering from depression. In Belgium, with the current laws, this is possible...
Tom goes on to express that this issue is not about the right to die for the terminally ill, but rather about the doors that this opens, like it has in Belgium, where this likely started to protect doctors from being legally prosecuted in cases where people were at end of life and in severe pain, but has ended up creating situations where people for many reasons, other than terminal illness, are turning to euthanasia, and dying as a result. He questions the humanity, when the solution to a problem is to take a persons life, rather than care...whether that be care of family and communities coming together - taking care of each other, or doctors.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgium has received proposals from Britain and the United States to replace its ageing fleet of fighter jets, while a French proposal that was not part of the tender process will be looked at separately, Belgium’s defense minister said.
Belgium invited government-led proposals in March for the replacement of its fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16 planes with 34 new fighters, in a deal that could be worth more than 3.5 billion euros ($4.2 billion).
Last month, France proposed a wide-ranging military deal with Belgium instead of responding to the tender. The deal goes beyond the terms of the tender whilst including the sale of Rafale fighter jets.
While the French offer would be discussed by the government, it could open Belgium to criticism that it was not treating candidates equally, Vandeput said.
“To be very clear, the French offer is not part of the contest,” minister Steven Vandeput told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday.
Offers from the U.S. for Lockheed F-35 Lightning II planes and British offers for the Eurofighter Typhoon did meet the tender rules, the minister added.
A spokeswoman for the defense ministry said the French proposal was being checked by its legal services and forwarded to the government which would decide at a later stage whether or not to respond.
The Rafales are made by France’s Dassault Aviation which declined to comment on Thursday.
Boeing pulled out of the race last spring.
The French government said that its proposal was in line with Belgium’s request.
“We have made an extended proposal which is legally relevant and we are waiting for a proposal by the Belgian government,” a spokeswoman for the French defense ministry said.
Belgium will make a decision on which jet fighter to pick next year.
The 34 jets are to be delivered from 2023, at a rate of 4-5 aircraft a year.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld Belgium’s ban on the Islamic full-face veil on Tuesday (July 11), rejecting a legal challenge by two Muslim women wearing the niqab.
The court in Strasbourg, France found that the 2011 Belgian law banning clothing that partly or totally covers the face did not violate the right to respect for private and family life nor freedom of religion, and that it did not disproportionately discriminate the Muslim community.
In its ruling, the court argued that the ban, however controversial, was “necessary in a democratic society” – because it seeks to guarantee the conditions of “living together” and the “protection of the rights and freedoms of others.”
“The question whether the full-face veil was accepted in the Belgian public sphere was… a choice of society,” it said in a statement.

Brussels, being the center of the European Union, is not only the capital of Belgium, but of whole Europe. The mediaval city core and square determine the atmosphere of the whole city. The Grand Palace is surrounded by magnificent baroque buildings, which were once centers of famous guilds. The building of the City Hall is remerkably beautiful. Not far away stands the Menneken Pils, one of the symbols of Brussels. In the elegant passages and on the streets one can find such Belgian rarities as lace, pralines, and beer. The most notable sights in the city are the Parliament and the City Hall, but we must not forget the Museums showing us the works of the authors of the Low Countries. Near the triumphal arch stands the famous Atomium, which was the symbol of the 1958 World Fair. We can take memorable trips to Bokrijk cultural village, to the shore os Oostende, the site of the battle of Waterloo, and to the cities of Antwerpen and Gent. And finally to Bruges, a real tourists’ paradise with its red brick buildings.

Its port, Zeebrugge, is an important center for fishing and European trade. Well, Hello and welcome to Brugge! We are excited to explore the city. We just got here in the afternoon. The light is perfect, the day is beautiful and we're going to go explore and see what the city is all about.
Once in Bruges we set off to see the Old Town. We watched horse-drawn carriages roll down the square, admired the buildings, and visited chocolate shops because if there's one thing you have to do in Belgium, it's sample all their delicious chocolate.
So good morning. It is the start of day 2 here in Bruges, so we're going to continue sightseeing. I think the first order of business is to try and find a boat so we can take a little tour down the canals and maybe after that we'll start thinking about food. I know there is a few Belgian dishes that we're itching to try so let's get started with the day.
We started off the morning with a cruise down the canals. Like many cities in Europe, Bruges too has earned the nickname 'The Venice of the North' due to the numerous waterways that run through the city. It was a great way to get a closer look at the city, and it didn't hurt that we had swans to keep us company.
So we have a very exciting taste test coming up today. We are in Bruges, Belgium and that means we have to try Belgian fries. Not French fries. So let's get a look at that and then I'm going to give you a bit of the history behind it.
So there is a bit of a heated debate about whether fries or French fries or Belgian fries. Where exactly did they originate? So our tour guide yesterday was telling us that apparently during World War I there were a lot of British and American soldiers who were between Belgium and France and sometimes they didn't know what country they were in. All they knew is that they could hear French being spoken. So they assumed we must be in France and these must be French Fries.
So it is time for our last taste test here in Belgium, so we stopped by a chocolate shop to pick up some hand made chocolate. And the Belgians actually used to have a colony in Africa, so that meant cocoa beans, and plenty of time to perfect the art of chocolate making. So that means today they are one of the leading experts in chocolate production, so today is a chocolate taste test.
Waffles! Waffles! We are having waffles!
Well, considering today is our last full day in Belgium we couldn't leave the country without trying at least one Belgian waffle.
And to prove its authenticity it even has a Belgian flag. Why don't you take out that flag and wave it. Come on, go wave it.
Wave the flag?
Wave that flag.
Belgian waffles, dun da da dun da da.
Belgian waffles. dun da da dun dah.
So the funny thing about Belgian waffles is that there is no such thing as Belgian waffles in Belgium.
Sure, in North America we call them Belgium waffles but here they are just regular old waffles.
And that is only because we have crappy waffles. Yes, we have to put them in the toaster. We usually buy them from the frozen section in Canada.
But anyway, what sets these waffles apart is that they are a lot larger, a lot fluffier and the squares are a lot bigger than your average waffles that you buy from the frozen section back in North America. So let's dig in before this starts melting.

In 2002, euthanasia by a physician (the intentional termination of a patient’s life at his or her request) was depenalized in Belgium for adults and emancipated minors. In 2014, the law was extended to competent minors, without an age limit. The frequency of performance of euthanasia is rising very rapidly, having more than doubled in the last five years (accounting for one death in twenty, about 8 per day in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region). Moreover, although the prevalence of euthanasia remains highest in patients with cancer, a clear shift is visible in the characteristics of patients who request euthanasia and whose requests are granted. The largest increases are among women, and those aged 80 or older, with lower education levels, and dying in nursing homes.
The patient must be “in a medical condition, without prospect of improvement, of constant and unbearable physical or psychological suffering that cannot be alleviated, resulting from a serious and incurable disorder caused by illness or accident”. Euthanasia is becoming ever more common in cases of non-physical suffering. Moreover, epidemiological data and preliminary interview data suggest that euthanasia requests for ‘tiredness of life’ are becoming an increasingly major issue.
This talk will focus on two very recent legal developments: the ruling by the Belgian Constitutional Court on 29 October 2015 on appeals to annul the extension of the euthanasia law to children; and the very first referral of a euthanasia case to the Public Prosecutor on 27 October 2015 (a tiredness of life case). The second topic will be discussed in the context of the establishment of a task force of the Belgian National Advisory Committee on Bioethics on the meaning of the concept ‘psychological suffering’ in the law. Professor Sterckx serves as Rapporteur for this task force, which was set up at the request of the Secretary of State for Health due to concerns regarding the increasingly broad interpretation of the legal criteria for euthanasia.

The patient must be “in a medical condition, without prospect of improvement, of constant and unbearable physical or psychological suffering that cannot be alleviated, resulting from a serious and incurable disorder caused by illness or accident”. Euthanasia is becoming ever more common in cases of non-physical suffering. Moreover, epidemiological data and preliminary interview data suggest that euthanasia requests for ‘tiredness of life’ are becoming an increasingly major issue.
This talk will focus on two very recent legal developments: the ruling by the Belgian Constitutional Court on 29 October 2015 on appeals to annul the extension of the euthanasia law to children; and the very first referral of a euthanasia case to the Public Prosecutor on 27 October 2015 (a tiredness of life case). The second topic will be discussed in the context of the establishment of a task force of the Belgian National Advisory Committee on Bioethics on the meaning of the concept ‘psychological suffering’ in the law. Professor Sterckx serves as Rapporteur for this task force, which was set up at the request of the Secretary of State for Health due to concerns regarding the increasingly broad interpretation of the legal criteria for euthanasia.

On 8th March, 2013 the Afghan community in Belgium staged a protest outside Gaucheretstraat 92 -- 94 in Schaarbeek (near Brussel Noord station), the offices of the 'Raad voor Vreemdelingenbetwistingen' (Council for contested decisions regarding 'Foreigners') on International Women's Rights Day.
The Belgian authorities, for reasons that are difficult to understand, keep refusing refugee status to Afghans who have not exactly followed the straight path to Belgium. If you only look at the legal aspect you can understand why some Afghans do not get permanent residence in Belgium, but as soon as you look at the situation in Afghanistan it should be clear that all members of ethnic and/or religious minorities like Hazara Shias, Hindus en Sikhs should be given refugee status.
The security situation in Afghanistan is now so bad and getting worse, even in Kabul, that nobody should be sent back to that country.
And we have not even discussed the position of women of all backgrounds. There was a good turnout of both Afghans and their supporters in Schaarbeek, the press was there, some UK Afghan Sikhs had come over.
