As a passionate wildlife lover, everyone wishes to take award winning photographs or to make interesting short film. With advance DSLR cameras, taking good quality photographs has become much easier. However when we think about making a short film, we feel that it is a quite time consuming, which also needs lot of money. We also end up concluding that unless we have some special permissions, we cannot take video footage in tiger reserves. Another excuse that we often give is that making short film needs high end cameras with long telephoto lenses, which again needs lot of money.
“Silent Observer” – is our first attempt to make a short film on Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra. Below are the key points, which will prove that making a short film on wildlife isn’t that difficult.
1. About 90% footage has been taken using Sony HX50 Point and Shoot Camera, which costs less than 25000 INR. It can capture HD video footage.
2. We did not take any special permission neither we got access to any special zone. We took all the footage during only 8 safaris that we did in Tadoba as a regular tourist.
3. About 75% footage has been taken by a girl (Preity) who is just 17 years old.
There might be many flaws that you can find easily in this film, however considering equipments that we have used and the duration for which we took the footage, we are extremely happy about our outcome. This film has inspired us to make 2nd attempt with proper preparation. We hope that it will encourage some of you to make such interesting short film.
Please put speakers on high volume, let it buffer properly and enjoy the journey to Tadoba – Land of Tigers!!

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra state in central India. It is notable as Maharashtra's oldest and largest national park. It is one of India's 43 "Project Tiger" - tiger reserves.
Etymology
The name 'Tadoba' is the name of the God "Tadoba" or "Taru", praised by the tribal people who live in the dense forests of the Tadoba and Andhari region, while the Andhari River that meanders through the forest. gives the 'Andhari' name.
History
Legend holds that Taru was a village chief who was killed in a mythological encounter with a tiger. A shrine dedicated to the God Taru now exists beneath a huge tree, on the banks of the Tadoba Lake. The temple is frequented by adivasis, especially during the fair held every year in the Hindu month of Pausha, between December and January.
The Gond kings once ruled these forests in the vicinity of the Chimur hills. Hunting was completely banned in 1935. Two decades later, in 1955, 116.54 km2 (45.00 sq mi) was declared a National Park. Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created on the adjacent forests in 1986, and in 1995, both the park and the sanctuary were merged to establish the present tiger reserve.

Project Tiger
Project Tiger is a tiger conservation programme launched in 1973 by the Government of India during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. The project aims at ensuring a viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats and also to protect them from extinction, and preserving areas of biological importance as a natural heritage forever represented as close as possible the diversity of ecosystems across the tiger's distribution in the country. The project's task force visualized these tiger reserves as breeding nuclei, from which surplus animals would migrate to adjacent forests. The Funds and commitment were mastered to support the intensive program of habitat protection and rehabilitation under the project. The government has set up a Tiger Protection Force to combat poachers and funded relocation of villagers to minimize human-tiger conflicts.
During the tiger census of 2006, a new methodology was used extrapolating site-specific densities of tigers, their co-predators and prey derived from camera trap and sign surveys using GIS. Based on the result of these surveys, the total tiger population has been estimated at 1,411 individuals ranging from 1,165 to 1,657 adult and sub-adult tigers of more than 1.5 years of age. Owing to the project, the number of tigers has improved to 2,226 as per the latest census report released on January 20, 2015.

Tiger
The tiger (Panthera tigris) is the largest cat species, reaching a total body length of up to 3.38 m (11.1 ft) over curves and exceptionally weighing up to 388.7 kg (857 lb) in the wild. Its most recognisable feature is a pattern of dark vertical stripes on reddish-orange fur with a lighter underside. The species is classified in the genus Panthera with the lion, leopard, jaguar and snow leopard. Tigers are apex predators, primarily preying on ungulates such as deer and bovids. They are territorial and generally solitary but social animals, often requiring large contiguous areas of habitat that support their prey requirements. This, coupled with the fact that they are indigenous to some of the more densely populated places on Earth, has caused significant conflicts with humans.
Tigers once ranged widely across Asia, from Turkey in the west to the eastern coast of Russia. Over the past 100 years, they have lost 93% of their historic range, and have been extirpated from southwest and central Asia, from the islands of Java and Bali, and from large areas of Southeast and Eastern Asia. Today, they range from the Siberian taiga to open grasslands and tropical mangrove swamps. The remaining six tiger subspecies have been classified as endangered by IUCN. The global population in the wild is estimated to number between 3,062 and 3,948 individuals, down from around 100,000 at the start of the 20th century, with most remaining populations occurring in small pockets isolated from each other, of which about 2,000 exist on the Indian subcontinent. Major reasons for population decline include habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation and poaching. The extent of area occupied by tigers is estimated at less than 1,184,911 km2 (457,497 sq mi), a 41% decline from the area estimated in the mid-1990s.

Recently separated cubs CG5 and CG6 hunt down a large sambar in the TigerTrails Jungle Lodge wildlife conservancy in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. Tiger Trails is a colonial style forest lodge set in the Chichghat valley on restored private wildlife conservancy adjacent to the exclusive Khutwanda gate of the reserve. The Tadoba River which flows through the lodge has three lakes, adjacent to the cottages having En-suite rooms. Numerous waterholes with observation machans provide undisturbed wildlife viewing. Travel tips
01 The cuisine is spicy, and sometimes unbearably so. For those not used to spicy food, it is best that you tell your hotel staff in advance. Most hotel staff are courteous, even if not highly trained in the hospitality industry
02 Only one mobile network works reliably at TATR: Reliance. If you need your mobile and data connectivity, take a backup Reliance SIM card. I tried all other networks. None of them worked
03 It is warm in TATR in this season. Keep yourself hydrated at all times
04 It is best that you drink mineral water, or at the very least, ask for filtered water
05 Keep a good quality sunscreen handy. Sunburns can be annoying
06 Keep a first-aid kit handy: Medical plasters for cuts and bruises, pills/tabs/syrups for major and minor stomach infections, painkillers, are a must
07 Do not talk loudly once inside the jungle. Any human noise scares away the animals
08 Although people go to TATR to sight leopards and tigers, there are more than 200 species of birds in the park. There are crocodiles, sambar deer, neelgai, gaur, langur, spotted deer, barking deer and many other animals you’d want to not miss. Keep an eye out for all

Tiger Trails is a colonial style forest lodge set in the Chichghat valley on restored private wildlife conservancy adjacent to the exclusive Khutwanda gate of the reserve. Recently separated cubs CG5 and CG6 hunt down a large sambar in the TigerTrails Jungle Lodge wildlife conservancy in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve.

05 Keep a good quality sunscreen handy. Sunburns can be annoying

The TCUs in tropical moist evergreen forests represent the less common tiger habitats, being largely limited to the upland areas and wetter parts of the Western Ghats, and include the Tiger Reserves of Periyar, Kalakad-Mundathurai, Bandipur and Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary.
