The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 54 countries in Africa. The only African state that is not a member is Morocco, due to the status of the Western Sahara, although Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic have had their memberships suspended due to the recent coup d'état and ongoing civil war, respectively. The AU was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa, with the aim of replacing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The most important decisions of the AU are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual meeting of the heads of state and government of its member states. The AU's secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa.
The objectives of the AU are:

Somalia (/səˈmɑːliə, soʊ-, -ljə/so-MAH-lee-ə; Somali: Soomaaliya; Arabic: الصومال aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Federal Republic of Somalia (Somali: Jamhuuriyadda Federaalka Soomaaliya, Arabic: جمهورية الصومال الفدرالية Jumhūrīyat aṣ-Ṣūmāl al-Fidirālīyah), is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest. Somalia has the longest coastline on the continent's mainland, and its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains and highlands. Climatically, hot conditions prevail year-round, with periodic monsoon winds and irregular rainfall.
Somalia has a population of around 10.8 million. Around 85% of its residents are ethnic Somalis, who have historically inhabited the northern part of the country. Ethnic minorities are largely concentrated in the southern regions. The official languages of Somalia are Somali and Arabic, both of which belong to the Afroasiatic family. Most people in the country are Muslim, with the majority being Sunni.
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is an active, regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations in Somalia. It is mandated to support transitional governmental structures, implement a national security plan, train the Somali security forces, and to assist in creating a secure environment for the delivery of humanitarian aid. As part of its duties, AMISOM also supports the Federal Government of Somalia's forces in their battle against Al-Shabaab militants.
AMISOM was created by the African Union's Peace and Security Council on 19 January 2007 with an initial six-month mandate. On 21 February 2007 the United Nations Security Council approved the mission's mandate. Subsequent six-monthly renewals of AMISOM's mandate by the African Union Peace and Security Council have also been authorised by the United Nations Security Council.
The duration of AMISOM's mandate has been extended in each period that it has been up for review, lastly in October 2014. The current mandate expires on 30 November 2015. Until that time its maximum allowed strength is 22,126 troops.
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and experiences extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.
During the Second World War, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated talks on a successor agency to the League of Nations, and the United Nations Charter was drafted at a conference in April–June 1945; this charter took effect 24 October 1945, and the UN began operation. The UN's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in its early decades by the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union and their respective allies. The organization participated in major actions in Korea and the Congo, as well as approving the creation of the state of Israel in 1947. The organization's membership grew significantly following widespread decolonization in the 1960s, and by the 1970s its budget for economic and social development programmes far outstripped its spending on peacekeeping. After the end of the Cold War, the UN took on major military and peacekeeping missions across the world with varying degrees of success.
Hussein (/huːˈseɪn/; also spelled Husein, Husain, Hussain, Husayin, Hussayin, Hüseyin, Husseyin, Huseyn, Hossain, Hosein, Hossein, or Husseyn) (Arabic: حُسَين, Ḥusayn), is an Arabic name which is the diminutive of Hassan, meaning "good", "handsome" or "beautiful". It is commonly given as a male given name, particularly among Shias. In some Persian sources the forms Ḥosayn, Hosayn, or Hossein are used. On the Subcontinent or South Asia, the form used is "Hussain" or "Hossain" in the Bengal region.
This name was not used in the pre-Islamic period, and is recorded to have been first used by the Islamic prophet Muhammad when he named his grandson Husayn ibn Ali, saying he had been commanded to do so by the archangel Gabriel.
Somalia has been ravaged by 20 years of civil war. Widely publicised atrocities prompted the US government to step in to restore order, it was a disaster. If the most powerful country of all had failed, who could possibly bring peace to Mogadishu? AMISOM: an African solution to an African problem.

It's been 10 years since the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as AMISOM began its operations. AMISOM's has been credited with restoring a sense of order in the capital Mogadishu, having pushed out the Al-shabaab militants in 2011. But a lack of funding is threatening AMISOMS operations. Coletta Wanjohi reports from Addis Ababa
This month marks a decade since the forces of the Africa mission in Somalia set foot inside the country to counter the al shabaab terror group. Chief of Defense Forces Gen. David Muhoozi has urged soldiers leaving for Somali Mission to be vigilant and watch their conduct not to reverse the gains the country has achieved on the mission. The CDF was leading the final briefing for fresh soldiers who are to leave for Somalia on Thursday this week.
The African Union has announced it will end its peacekeeping mission in Somalia soon. A gradual exit strategy is planned. Many say the peaceful Somali power transition after this week's elections have motivated the AU to fully hand back security control of the nation to its people. CGTN's Girum Chala has more.
STORY: Members of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are conducting daily patrols in the southern port city of Kismayo in Somalia. Fierce fighting broke out between rival militias fighting for control of the town earlier this month. The patrols are conducted by Kenyan and Sierra Leonean troops serving with the AU Mission, and have helped restore relative calm to the country's second largest city. Kismayo is located just over 500 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu - the capital. The city and its port were formerly under the control of Islamist extremist group al Shabaab until October last year. The severely weakened al Qaeda-linked group was pushed out by Somali National Forces supported by AMISOM's Kenyan contingent, as has been the case in most Somali towns. At the Kismayo Gener...
At least 15 people have been killed in Somalia when al-Shabaab bombed the intelligence headquarters in Mogadishu, and clashed with security forces. That comes after African Union peacekeepers and Somali troops recaptured a southern town from the militant group. CCTV’s Clementine Logan reports
The United Nations is Somalia's number one development partner. UN officials however claim that the United Nations Support Office for the African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM, was working in a significantly non-permissive environment. The report presented to the UN Security Council cited insecurity as the main threat and called for strengthening of it's Somalia's mission". CCTV's Abdulaziz Billow has the details.

For 16 years following the collapse of the Siad Barré regime in 1991, Somalia remained the only country in the world without an effective central government. Six months of relative stability under the rule of the Union of Islamic Courts was brought to a rapid close in the final days of 2006, as Ethiopian militia allied to the forces of a transitional government (which was formed in Kenya in 2004, but had never assumed power) took over the capital Mogadishu.
