Economics PhD Sebastião Salgado only took up photography in his 30s, but the discipline became an obsession. His years-long projects beautifully capture the human side of a global story that all too often involves death, destruction or decay. Here, he tells a deeply personal story of the craft that nearly killed him, and shows breathtaking images from his latest work, Genesis, which documents the world's forgotten people and places.

Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944. He grew up on a farm with his seven sisters. Salgado originally pursued a career in economics graduating with his masters degree from the University of São Paulo. After beginning his doctorate, he moved to London and worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization.
Around the age of 26, he began to develop an interest in photography. It didn’t take long to develop his skill and within several years he decided to pursue a second career as a photo journalist. In 1979 he joined Magnum Photos of which he was a member until starting his own agency in 1994.

Sebastião Salgado
Sebastião Salgado (born February 8, 1944) is a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist.
He has traveled in over 120 countries for his photographic projects. Most of these have appeared in numerous press publications and books. Touring exhibitions of this work have been presented throughout the world.
Salgado is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant in 1982, Foreign Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992 and the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) in 1993.
Biography
Salgado was born on February 8, 1944 in Aimorés, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. After a somewhat itinerant childhood, Salgado initially trained as an economist, earning a master’s degree in economics from the University of São Paulo in Brazil. He began work as an economist for the International Coffee Organization, often traveling to Africa on missions for the World Bank, when he first started seriously taking photographs. He chose to abandon a career as an economist and switched to photography in 1973, working initially on news assignments before veering more towards documentary-type work. Salgado initially worked with the photo agency Sygma and the Paris-based Gamma, but in 1979, he joined the international cooperative of photographers Magnum Photos. He left Magnum in 1994 and with his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado formed his own agency, Amazonas Images, in Paris, to represent his work. He is particularly noted for his social documentary photography of workers in less developed nations. They reside in Paris.

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, GOIH (born 5 February 1985), known as Cristiano Ronaldo (Portuguese pronunciation: [kɾɨʃtiˈɐnu ʁuˈnaɫdu]), is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Real Madrid and the Portugal national team. Michael Salgado (born Miguel Salgado, 1971, in Barrancas, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Biography
Norteño/Tejano singer/accordionist Michael Salgado gained prominence in the mid-1990s by looking back to the 'norteño' sound influenced by Ramon Ayala, and by subsequently introducing the style to the younger generation. He positioned his backing musicians, brothers Ernie and James, to play guitar and drums respectively, with the bass player being Joe Tanguma — at the age of only 19. He began climbing the Latin American music charts in 1995 after releasing his single "Cruz de Madera". Salgado's 1996 album "En Concierto" introduced his most successful single, "Sin Ella", which reached the top 20 of the Latin American music charts. His album "Mi Primer Amor" was released in 1997.

He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and an honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States. In 2004, Sebastião Salgado began a project named Genesis, aiming at the presentation of the unblemished faces of nature and humanity. It consists of a series of photographs of landscapes and wildlife, as well as of human communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures. This body of work is conceived as a potential path to humanity's rediscovery of itself in nature. Together, Lélia and Sebastião have worked since the 1990's on the restoration of a small part of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In 1998 they succeeded in turning this land into a nature reserve and created the Instituto Terra. The Instituto is dedicated to a mission of reforestation, conservation and environmental education. - Sebastião Salgado (Aimorés, Brasile 8 febbraio 1944) è un fotografo brasiliano, che attualmente vive a Parigi. Dopo una formazione universitaria di economista e statistico decide, in seguito ad una missione in Africa, di diventare fotografo. Nel 1973 realizza un reportage sulla siccità del Sahel, seguito da uno sulle condizioni di vita dei lavoratori immigrati in Europa. Nel 1974 entra nell'agenzia Sygma e documenta la rivoluzione in Portogallo e la guerra coloniale in Angola e in Mozambico. Nel 1975 entra a far parte dell'agenzia Gamma ed in seguito, nel 1979, della celebre cooperativa di fotografi Magnum Photos. Nel 1994 lascia la Magnum per creare, insieme a Lelia Wanick Salgado, Amazonas Images, una struttura autonoma completamente dedicata al suo lavoro. Salgado si occupa soprattutto di reportage di impianto umanitario e sociale, consacrando mesi, se non addirittura anni, a sviluppare e approfondire tematiche di ampio respiro. A titolo di esempio, possiamo citare i lunghi viaggi che, per sei anni, lo portano in America Latina per documentarsi sulla vita delle campagne. Questo lavoro ha dato vita al libro "Other Americas". Durante i sei anni successivi Salgado concepisce e realizza un progetto sul lavoro nei settori di base della produzione. Il risultato è "La mano dell'uomo", una pubblicazione monumentale di 400 pagine, uscita nel 1993, tradotta in sette lingue e accompagnata da una mostra presentata finora in oltre sessanta musei e luoghi espositivi di tutto il mondo. Dal 1993 al 1999 Salgado lavora sul tema delle migrazioni umane. I suoi reportages sono pubblicati, con regolarità, da molte riviste internazionali. Oggi, questo lavoro è presentato nei volumi "In Cammino" e "Ritratti di bambini in cammino", due opere che accompagnano la mostra omonima edite in Italia da Contrasto. Nel 2013 Salgado ha dato il suo sostegno alla campagna di Survival International per salvare gli Awá del Brasile, la tribù più minacciata del mondo. The novel was originally broadcast during nine months, and all Brazilians were discussing Ana and Clara's rights, and the problems arising from the science's new possibilities.

Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944. He grew up on a farm with his seven sisters. Salgado originally pursued a career in economics graduating with his masters degree from the University of São Paulo. After beginning his doctorate, he moved to London and worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization. Around the age of 26, he began to develop an interest in photography. It didn’t take long to develop his skill and within several years he decided to pursue a second career as a photo journalist. Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944. He grew up on a farm with his seven sisters. Salgado originally pursued a career in economics graduating with his masters degree from the University of São Paulo. After beginning his doctorate, he moved to London and worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization.
Around the age of 26, he began to develop an interest in photography. It didn’t take long to develop his skill and within several years he decided to pursue a second career as a photo journalist. In 1979 he joined Magnum Photos of which he was a member until starting his own agency in 1994.

Sebastião Salgado was born on February 8th, 1944 in Aimorés, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He lives in Paris. Having studied economics, Salgado began his career as a professional photographer in 1973 in Paris, working with the photo agencies Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos until 1994, when he and Lélia Wanick Salgado formed Amazonas images, an agency created exclusively for his work.
He has travelled in over 100 countries for his photographic projects. Most of these, besides appearing in numerous press publications, have also been presented in books such as Other Americas (1986), Sahel: l'homme en détresse (1986), Sahel: el fin del camino (1988), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations and Portraits (2000), and Africa (2007). Touring exhibitions of this work have been, and continue to be, presented throughout the world.
Sebastião Salgado has been awarded numerous major photographic prizes in recognition of his accomplishments. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and an honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States.
In 2004, Sebastião Salgado began a project named Genesis, aiming at the presentation of the unblemished faces of nature and humanity. It consists of a series of photographs of landscapes and wildlife, as well as of human communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures. This body of work is conceived as a potential path to humanity's rediscovery of itself in nature. Together, Lélia and Sebastião have worked since the 1990's on the restoration of a small part of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In 1998 they succeeded in turning this land into a nature reserve and created the Instituto Terra. The Instituto is dedicated to a mission of reforestation, conservation and environmental education.

Dopo una formazione universitaria di economista e statistico decide, in seguito ad una missione in Africa, di diventare fotografo. Nel 1973 realizza un reportage sulla siccità del Sahel, seguito da uno sulle condizioni di vita dei lavoratori immigrati in Europa. Nel 1974 entra nell'agenzia Sygma e documenta la rivoluzione in Portogallo e la guerra coloniale in Angola e in Mozambico. Nel 1975 entra a far parte dell'agenzia Gamma ed in seguito, nel 1979, della celebre cooperativa di fotografi Magnum Photos. Nel 1994 lascia la Magnum per creare, insieme a Lelia Wanick Salgado, Amazonas Images, una struttura autonoma completamente dedicata al suo lavoro. Salgado si occupa soprattutto di reportage di impianto umanitario e sociale, consacrando mesi, se non addirittura anni, a sviluppare e approfondire tematiche di ampio respiro.
A titolo di esempio, possiamo citare i lunghi viaggi che, per sei anni, lo portano in America Latina per documentarsi sulla vita delle campagne. Questo lavoro ha dato vita al libro "Other Americas".
Durante i sei anni successivi Salgado concepisce e realizza un progetto sul lavoro nei settori di base della produzione. Il risultato è "La mano dell'uomo", una pubblicazione monumentale di 400 pagine, uscita nel 1993, tradotta in sette lingue e accompagnata da una mostra presentata finora in oltre sessanta musei e luoghi espositivi di tutto il mondo.
Dal 1993 al 1999 Salgado lavora sul tema delle migrazioni umane. I suoi reportages sono pubblicati, con regolarità, da molte riviste internazionali. Oggi, questo lavoro è presentato nei volumi "In Cammino" e "Ritratti di bambini in cammino", due opere che accompagnano la mostra omonima edite in Italia da Contrasto.
Nel 2013 Salgado ha dato il suo sostegno alla campagna di Survival International per salvare gli Awá del Brasile, la tribù più minacciata del mondo.
"Genesi" è l'ultimo grande lavoro di Sebastião Salgado ed offre uno sguardo appassionato, teso a sottolineare la necessità di salvaguardare il nostro pianeta, di cambiare il nostro stile di vita, di assumere nuovi comportamenti più rispettosi della natura e di quanto ci circonda.

Traveling constantly across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, Sebastião Salgado has documented the human toll of violence and migration in visually stunning photographs of manual laborers, refugees, and sprawling metropolises. The 2001 documentary Salgado: The Spectre of Hope chronicled the creation of his series of photographs, published as Migrations: Humanity in Transition. In 1998 he established the Instituto Terra with his wife to restore biodiversity to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, encourage sustainable development, and conduct research and environmental education. He has been honored with the Hasselblad Award, Photographer of the Year by the International Center for Photography, and an honorary doctorate from the New School.

Sebastião Salgado
Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944. He grew up on a farm with his seven sisters. Salgado originally pursued a career in economics graduating with his masters degree from the University of São Paulo. After beginning his doctorate, he moved to London and worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization. Around the age of 26, he began to develop an interest in photography. It didn’t take long to develop his skill and within several years he decided to pursue a second career as a photo journalist. Meet the acclaimed Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado in this interview about his latest project 'Genesis' - a photographic homage to our planet in its natural state, dedicated to capturing the beauty of our planet and preserving it for the future.
"I really believe that we must deal with things in a different way, we must create another model of life." Salgado's photography is about what he believes, he explains: that humanity should rediscover itself in the nature of our planet, and that we should reverse the damage done to it. Humans have changed the planet without understanding our place on it: "We don't understand the life on our planet." The idea of the exhibition is to show us the forgotten people and places of the world, that we are in risk of loosing: "My wish is that you come to see a small sample of the planet, just a 100-150 pictures of what is pristine."
Genesis is the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society -- the land and life of a still pristine planet. The idea for 'Genesis' began with Salgado becoming very ill after making the project 'Migration' and experiencing the horrific violence in Rwanda. In an attempt to recover he returned to his childhood home, a farm in Brazil surrounded by a vast landscape covered with rain forest and full of incredible beauty. From the time when Salgado was a child till the time he took over the farm as an adult, Brazil had, along with the rest of the world, been destroying the environment in a most brutal way. When they took over the farm Salgado's wife got the "crazy idea" that they should replant the rain forest. As they did so, the birds, animals and water began to reappear.
Sebastião Salgado (b.1944) is a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist. Salgado initially trained as an economist, and worked for the International Coffee Organization, often travelling to Africa on missions for the World Bank, when he first started seriously taking photographs. He switched to photography in 1973, working initially on news assignments before veering more towards documentary-type work.
Salgado was part of the international cooperative of photographers Magnum Photos between 1979 and 1994, after which formed his own agency, Amazonas Images, in Paris, to represent his work.Salgado has travelled in over 100 countries for his photographic projects, which have been presented in books such as Other Americas (1986), Sahel: l'homme en détresse (1986), Sahel: el fin del camino (1988), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations and Portraits (2000), and Africa (2007). Salgado has won numerous awards, amongst others The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) - and is an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Between 2004 and 2011, Salgado worked on the project "Genesis," aiming at the presentation of the unblemished faces of nature and humanity. It consists of a series of photographs of landscapes and wildlife, as well as of human communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures.

Salgado was part of the international cooperative of photographers Magnum Photos between 1979 and 1994, after which formed his own agency, Amazonas Images, in Paris, to represent his work.Salgado has travelled in over 100 countries for his photographic projects, which have been presented in books such as Other Americas (1986), Sahel: l'homme en détresse (1986), Sahel: el fin del camino (1988), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations and Portraits (2000), and Africa (2007). Salgado has won numerous awards, amongst others The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) - and is an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Between 2004 and 2011, Salgado worked on the project "Genesis," aiming at the presentation of the unblemished faces of nature and humanity. It consists of a series of photographs of landscapes and wildlife, as well as of human communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures.

The 2001 documentary Salgado: The Spectre of Hope chronicled the creation of his series of photographs, published as Migrations: Humanity in Transition. In 1998 he established the Instituto Terra with his wife to restore biodiversity to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, encourage sustainable development, and conduct research and environmental education. He has been honored with the Hasselblad Award, Photographer of the Year by the International Center for Photography, and an honorary doctorate from the New School.

Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944. He grew up on a farm with his seven sisters. Salgado originally pursued a career in economics graduating with his masters degree from the University of São Paulo. After beginning his doctorate, he moved to London and worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization.
Around the age of 26, he began to develop an interest in photography. It didn’t take long to develop his skill and within several years he decided to pursue a second career as a photo journalist. In 1979 he joined Magnum Photos of which he was a member until starting his own agency in 1994.
