Experimental film, experimental cinema or avant-garde cinema is a mode of filmmaking that rigorously re-evaluates cinematic conventions and explores non-narrative forms and alternatives to traditional narratives or methods of working. Many experimental films, particularly early ones, relate to arts in other disciplines: painting, dance, literature and poetry, or arise from research and development of new technical resources.
While some experimental films have been distributed through mainstream channels or even made within commercial studios, the vast majority have been produced on very low budgets with a minimal crew or a single person and are either self-financed or supported through small grants.
Experimental filmmakers generally begin as amateurs, and some used experimental films as a springboard into commercial film making or transitioned into academic positions. The aim of experimental filmmaking is usually to render the personal vision of an artist, or to promote interest in new technology rather than to entertain or to generate revenue, as is the case with commercial films.
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.
A film, also called a movie, motion picture or photoplay, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations.
The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry.
An experiment is a procedure carried out to verify, refute, or validate a hypothesis. Experiments provide insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated. Experiments vary greatly in goal and scale, but always rely on repeatable procedure and logical analysis of the results. There also exist natural experimental studies.
A child may carry out basic experiments to understand gravity, while teams of scientists may take years of systematic investigation to advance their understanding of a phenomenon. Experiments and other types of hands-on activities are very important to student learning in the science classroom. Experiments can raise test scores and help a student become more engaged and interested in the material they are learning, especially when used over time. Experiments can vary from personal and informal natural comparisons (e.g. tasting a range of chocolates to find a favorite), to highly controlled (e.g. tests requiring complex apparatus overseen by many scientists that hope to discover information about subatomic particles). Uses of experiments vary considerably between the natural and human sciences.

Keepsake, an experimental short film by Callum Linden. This film won Best Experimental Film at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Next Wave Jump Cuts Filmmakers Showcase. This film was done for a film project, for film school. The purpose of the project, was to find an object that had great meaning to myself, and through my film, I had to show that the object I chose wasn't only an inanimate object, but something more. I had to change the viewer's opinion on my object, changing it from their view of it being just the object, to my personal view by subjectifying it, and showing what my object means to me. The film had to have 70% of it's footage as the object, and the other 30% could be extra narrative elements to help enhance the story. KEEPSAKE Artist's Statement The obje...
A short experimental film for QUT KPB 201 Experimental Cinema, Semester 1, 2011. Just my tribute to the most invasive force nature has to offer - time. This was done in a bit of a rush (as most university assignments tend to be!) and I don't think it's my best work, but I think I'm shameless enough to share it with the world :3 Music is Solarwindscythe's fantastic Chrono Current. The color of infinity
inside an empty glass
I'm squinting my eye and turning
off and on
and on and off the light
It's for this experimental film
which nobody knows about and which
I'm still figuring out
what's going to go
in my experimental film
Yeah- You're all gonna be in this
experimental film
and even though I can't explain it
I already know how great it's
I already know the ending
it's the part
that makes
your face implode
I don't know what makes
your face implode
but that's the way
the movie ends
And in my experimental film
which nobody knows about but which
I'm still figuring out
your face implodes
with my experimental film
Yeah- You're all gonna be in this
experimental film
and even though I can't explain it
I already know how great it's
even though I can't explain it
I already know how great it's
