Fairport Convention are an English folk rock and electric folk band. Formed in 1967, they are widely regarded as a key group in the English folk rock movement.
Their seminal album Liege & Lief is considered to have launched the electric folk or English folk rock movement, which provided a distinctively English identity to rock music and helped awaken much wider interest in traditional music in general. The large number of personnel who have been part of the band are among the most highly regarded and influential musicians of their era and have gone on to participate in a large number of significant bands, or enjoyed important solo careers.
Since 1979, they have hosted the Cropredy Festival, which is the largest such annual event in England. Individually and collectively the members of Fairport Convention have received numerous awards recognizing their contribution to music and culture. As of 2016, they continue to record and tour.
Bassist Ashley Hutchings met guitarist Simon Nicol in North London in 1966 when they both played in the Ethnic Shuffle Orchestra. They rehearsed on the floor above Nicol's father's medical practice in a house called "Fairport" on Fortis Green in Muswell Hill, North London (the same street on which Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks grew up), which lent its name to the group they formed together as Fairport Convention in 1967 with Richard Thompson on guitar and Shaun Frater on drums. After their first performance at St Michael's Church Hall in Golders Green, North West London on 27 May 1967, they had their first of many line-up changes as one member of the audience, drummer Martin Lamble, convinced the band that he could do a better job than Frater and replaced him. They soon added a female singer, Judy Dyble, which gave them a distinctive sound among the many London bands of the period.
Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny (6 January 1947 – 21 April 1978) — known as Sandy Denny — was an English singer and songwriter, perhaps best known as the lead singer for the folk rock band Fairport Convention. She has been described as "the pre-eminent British folk rock singer".
After briefly working with British folk band the Strawbs, Denny joined Fairport Convention in 1968, remaining with that band until the end of 1969. She formed the short-lived band Fotheringay in 1970, releasing one album with them (another unreleased album surfaced over thirty years later), before focusing on a solo career. Between 1971 and 1977, Denny released four solo albums: The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, and Rendezvous. She is also noted as the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin studio album, when she shared a duet with Robert Plant for "The Battle of Evermore" on Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album (1971).
Music publications Uncut and Mojo, as well as the Sunday Express, have all called Denny Britain's finest female singer-songwriter. Her composition "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" has been recorded by many artists as diverse as Judy Collins, Nina Simone, 10,000 Maniacs and Cat Power.

Dave Swarbrick (born 5 April 1941) is an English folk musician and singer-songwriter. He has been described by Ashley Hutchings as 'the most influential [British] fiddle player bar none' and his style has been copied or developed by almost every British, and many world folk violin players who have followed him. He was one of the most highly regarded musicians produced by the second British folk revival, contributing to some of the most important groups and projects of the 1960s, and he became a much sought-after session musician, which has led him throughout his career to work with many of the major figures in folk and folk rock music.
His work for the group Fairport Convention from 1969 has been credited with leading them to produce their seminal album Liege and Lief (1969) which initiated the electric folk movement. This, and his subsequent career, helped create greater interest in British traditional music and was highly influential within mainstream rock. After 1970 he emerged as Fairport Convention's leading figure and guided the band through a series of important albums until its disbandment in 1979.
Fairport Convention were one of the most innovative and influential British bands of the late 1960's and are still recording and touring today. The lead singer during their greatest period was Sandy Denny who was in my opinion the greatest female vocalist of that or any era. The enormous emotional range of her voice has been unsurpassed by any other singer. Sandy died tragically in 1978 of a cerebral haemorrhage after falling down a flight of stairs.

Rare, earliest performance of this great band with original vocalist Judy Dyble. She would soon be replaced by Sandy Denny. Judy was very underrated! This song though has Ian Matthews on lead vocals. Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicol, and Martin Lamble are the other members during this time.

Fairport Convention's version of this poignant traditional song marks a pivotal point in the development of folk-rock, representing as it does a brilliant fusion of a traditional form with all the dynamic, exploratory approach of modern rock playing. The song had been a part of Sandy Denny's repertoire when she joined Fairport. As a traditional song it had been known in many forms. A Sailor's Life starts as a plaintive lament on the fickleness of sailors and the agonised waiting endured by their sweethearts until their return. The terrible irony of her rather bitter condemnation of the sailor's life as 'merry' is brought home by the subsequent tragedy. The singer extols her beloved's virtues before she sets off to find him. She hails a passing ship and is told that he is feared drowned...

1976-03-23 While Gottle o' Geer is often considered to be a "forgotten" (intentionally or not) Fairport recording, there was a real band from that recording that played live. The lineup that made the Gottle recording performed on the Rockpalast TV show for its only time. Prior to receiving this DVD, I had only seen (3) of these songs on a compilation DVD that has been around. I was told that this particular concert was not show in its entirety on TV. However, the trader had a contact at WDR who managed to find this. I asked this trader if he might get the Steeleye Span performance from the previous year, but that was not felt to be likely. So, everybody get busy on that that one! The tracks on this DVD are: 1. Introduction (English translation welcome) 2. come and Get It 3. The...

From their debut Album recorded in 1967 and released in 68 this was the original incarnation of Fairport convention with Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Martin Lamble, Judy Dyble and Iain Matthews. At the time aluding more to American folk rock sutch as the Byrds and Dylan and due to the duel vocals of Judy Dyble and Iain Matthews they were dubbed the brittish Jefferson Airplane. To learn more just look them up on Wikipedia ;). This is my version of the TV footage that exists of them which is unfortunately pretty poor quality. Although the original footage is actually a live recording (quite a bit faster) there wasnt really much i could do with my copy so I replaced it with the original Album version which was more or less the same (albeit slightly slower) as the live r...

A little home made homage using some low resolution videos and pictures with different formations of Fairport Convention that I found on YouTube and the web. I don't want to make money or anything like this. it's just a homage. Thanks for the owner of the music and all the owners of these videos and pictures I used and edited to make this simple homage. "A sailor's life" is a eighteenth-century traditional english folk song and was brought to us as an amazing folk-rock and psychedelic song by Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention in the 1969 album "Unhalfbricking". For me this is one of the 10 best rock songs of all time and the most representative of the work of Fairport Convention, with enchanting, powerful, and delightful vocals from Sandy Denny added to the incredible rock power of al...
Recorded in March 2012 at Union Chapel during the band's 45th Aniversary Tour.
This is mainly going up because I have no idea where it's from. I found it on a "Best of British Folk" Collection released by Castle in 1995. At first I thought it was from the "Rising for the Moon" era, but I'm not sure the singer is Sandy Denny, and the voice at the beginning sounds like Simon Nicol's (though I could be wrong about that). The clarity of the recording and the way the fiddle appears to be treated suggests a modern performance to me. Can anyone shed any light?

Fairport Convention's co-founder Simon Nicol doing justice to (the late) Sandy Denny's famous song and re-introducing Dutch singer Linde Nijland in Zaandam, The Netherlands in a church, named De Vermaning van de Doopsgezinde Gemeente. Linde Nijland is known in the Lowlands for her Sandy Denny interpretations. She has been invited by producer Joe Boyd to perform with a large Fairport Convention line-up before, some years ago, at the Barbican in London. This film, directed and restored by renowned British film director Tony Palmer, captures the band at the Maidstone Fiesta during the summer of 1970 as they run through their set of the time which included various jigs and reels and the songs Sir Patrick Spens and Now Be Thankful. This line up was, and still is, considered one of the key line ups of Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson (Vocals, Guitar), Dave Swarbrick (Vocals,Fiddle, Mandolin), Dave Pegg (Vocals, Bass Guitar, Mandolin), Dave Mattacks (Drums, Percussion), and Simon Nicol (Vocals,Guitar,Electric Dulcimer). Apart from the footage contained on this DVD, the Full House line up were never filmed commercially until reunions at the bands regular Cropredy Festival years later. All eyes upon the mighty Dave Swarbrick, fiddler for the ages with the enduring Fairport Convention at Glastonbury Fair in 1971. Quite a sight with hundreds of dancing hippies, and starry eyed children...another tyme, another place. Such amazing music by one of the greatest bands.

What We Did on Our Holidays is the second album release by the band Fairport Convention and was the first to feature Sandy Denny, whose "haunting, ethereal vocals gave Fairport a big boost", according to Allmusic's reviewer.[1] The album also showed a move towards the folk rock for which they became noted, including tracks later to become perennial favourites such as "Fotheringay" and the song traditionally used to close live concerts, "Meet on the Ledge".[2] Sandy Denny (as Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny) - vocals, acoustic & 12-string acoustic guitars, organ, piano, harpsichord Iain Matthews - vocals, congas Richard Thompson - electric, acoustic & 12-string acoustic guitars, piano accordion, vocals Ashley Hutchings - bass, backing vocals Simon Nicol - electric & acoustic guitars, electric...

Hosted by Mike Harding, this captures the "Full House" line-up of Fairport - Dave Swarbrick, Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg and Dave Mattacks with guest Linda Thompson - in the period when the band was in hiatus. They reformed with a somewhat different line-up in 1985 and continue to this day. BBC feature on the 1985 Cropredy festival, for the program London Plus, broadcast 9th August that year. Things I'd suggest ignoring - 1. the video quality, 2. the commentary (count the inanities and inaccuracies). For the rest, there's various musical excerpts from a rare Fairport line-up with Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Richard Thompson, Jerry Donahue (singing!), Dave Swarbrick, Dave Mattacks (keyboards) and Bruce Rowland, plus some interesting interviews. Particularly interesting as they make no mention of reforming the band permanently later the same year, without Swarb.

From Fairport Convention's inspired album, "Liege & Lief" where Sandy sings this tune by her fellow bandmates Richard Thompson & Dave Swarbrick. Amy McCann, guitar & vocals live backyard birds: chirping, live! (all strings are tuned down a half step) For my other Sandy Denny covers, see my playlist.
As known, Sandy was very fond of Bob Dylan's songs. This cover was made in February 1974, LA Troubadour, Los Angeles, only about 7 months after the release of Dylan's records. Only 3 covers of 1973 by another musicians is in the list of covers of this song, and we can guess this is one of the first recorded cover versions of that great song, and thereafter a lot of ones were done.
Sense of Occasion is a studio album by British folk-rock Fairport Convention, released in February 2007. The title comes from the fact that 2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the band (although only one member, Simon Nicol, remains from the original line-up). " The occasion is the band's 40th anniversary, and, although it's virtually all changed in terms of personnel now, they continue to mine the folk-rock seam exquisitely. They've made a career of it, having largely moved from the traditional fare that really made their name into contemporary work. In Chris Leslie they have an excellent songwriter, and Ric Sanders can provide memorable tunes. But they still keep one foot in the traditional camp, here with "Tam Lin" and "Polly on the Shore." The real oddity, though, is a cover of XTC's ...

Robert Plant and Kristina Donahue guest with Fairport Convention to perform Led Zeppelin's "The Battle Of Evermore" at Cropredy 2008. This was played as tribute to Sandy Denny on the 30th Anniversary of her death.
How to interview a rock legend live on air to a an ITV teatime audience and still work in the phrase "spank the monkey!" It makes me proud - and done against a very VERY loud background almost ONSTAGE at the CRopredy festival.

The separate tracks from this programme are elsewhere on the channel in lesser quality. Now, here is the whole thing (minus ads) in its entirety as telecast on Granada TV in August 1981. Material is a combination of songs they recorded in 1970, then-current tunes from Swarb's "Smiddyburn" album and rarities such as Bright Lights Tonight and the then-unreleased Wall Of Death. 0:28 Dirty Linen 3:03 Poor Will & The Jolly Hangman 9:47 Sir Charles Coote / Smiths 13:04 Wall Of Death 16:5...

The...

Deep and dark are my true love's eyes
Blacker still is the winter turning
As the sadness of parting proves
Brighter now is the lantern burning
That lightens my path to him
No fiddle tune will take the air
But I'll see his swift feet a-dancing
And the swirl of his dark brown hair
His smiling face and his dark eyes glancing
As we stepped up from Banbury Fair
Oh oh oh oh if my waiting prove in vain
Then I'll pack and track ever take me
And the long road will ease my pain
No jewelled man kind would ever make me
Whisper love's words again
For in drink I'll seek good company
My ears will ring with the tavern's laughter
And I'll hear not his last sweet sigh
And who's to know in the morning after
How I long for his dear dark eyes
How I long for his dear dark eyes
