The Bosphorus (/ˈbɒsfərəs/) or Bosporus (/ˈbɒspərəs/; Ancient Greek: Βόσπορος, Bósporos; Turkish: Boğaziçi) is a natural strait and internationally-significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, the Bosporus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and, by extension via the Dardanelles, the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.
Most of the shores of the strait are heavily settled, straddled by the city of Istanbul's metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants extending inland from both coasts.
Together with the Dardanelles (Hellespont) strait, the Bosphorus forms the Turkish Straits.
The original name of the channel comes from an Anglicization of the Ancient Greek Βόσπορος (Bosporos), which was folk-etymologized as βοὸς πόρος, i.e. "cattle strait" (or "Ox-ford"), from the genitive of bous βοῦς "ox, cattle" + poros πόρος "passage", thus meaning "cattle-passage", or "cow passage". This is in reference to the mythological story of Io, who was transformed into a cow, and was subsequently condemned to wander the Earth until she crossed the Bosphorus, where she met the Titan Prometheus, who comforted Io with the information that she would be restored to human form by Zeus and become the ancestress of the greatest of all heroes, Heracles (Hercules).
UTF-8 is a character encoding capable of encoding all possible characters, or code points, in Unicode.
The encoding is variable-length and uses 8-bit code units. It was designed for backward compatibility with ASCII, and to avoid the complications of endianness and byte order marks in the alternative UTF-16 and UTF-32 encodings. The name is derived from: Universal Coded Character Set + Transformation Format – 8-bit.
UTF-8 is the dominant character encoding for the World Wide Web, accounting for 86.2% of all Web pages in January 2016 (with the most popular East Asian encoding, GB 2312, at 0.9% and Shift JIS at 1.1%). The Internet Mail Consortium (IMC) recommends that all e-mail programs be able to display and create mail using UTF-8, and the W3C recommends UTF-8 as the default encoding in XML and HTML.
UTF-8 encodes each of the 1,112,064 valid code points in the Unicode code space (1,114,112 code points minus 2,048 surrogate code points) using one to four 8-bit bytes (a group of 8 bits is known as an octet in the Unicode Standard). Code points with lower numerical values (i.e., earlier code positions in the Unicode character set, which tend to occur more frequently) are encoded using fewer bytes. The first 128 characters of Unicode, which correspond one-to-one with ASCII, are encoded using a single octet with the same binary value as ASCII, making valid ASCII text valid UTF-8-encoded Unicode as well. And ASCII bytes do not occur when encoding non-ASCII code points into UTF-8, making UTF-8 safe to use within most programming and document languages that interpret certain ASCII characters in a special way, e.g. as end of string.

Istanbul has over 2,500 years worth of history and much of it can be glimpsed on a boat tour of the Bosphorus, the waterway that both divides the European side from the Asian side, and has been the lifeline of the city since the beginning. By purchasing an interactive audio guide, the history and culture of this unique stretch of water comes alive. It also gave me an excuse to hone my motion graphics skills when I got back. - - - - - - - - - - Music: 'Bedouin' - Christophe Goze Tanner Travels theme: http://www.purple-planet.com Copyright © 2015 Scott Tanner

Europe trip 2015 We arrived early in the morning and settled in at our hotel in Taksim Square. Our first impression was that our hotel was located in a pretty sketchy area where everything was closed...but that was because it was closed during the day. At night it was BOOMING! We ventured out to some close by tourist areas on transit. Everything was really accessible by transit and all the main areas were close together. We discovered cafeteria styled restaurants which is great for cheap meals and a big variety of food and cay, which is the turkish tea and these little shops are a great place to hang out! She was married to the Bosphorus
She threw her ring in then she blew a kiss
To the Ottomans and Byzantines
Lying beneath the sea
She wore a pink and yellow summer dress
She kept her hair just like a poetess
She traveled all the way to Germany
The trains and the cold, dark sea
The amber glow of a morning cigarette
On the Istiklal Cadessi
The vapor trails and the tiny minerettes
All the domes in silhouette
