Got Talent

Got Talent is a talent show television format conceived and owned by Simon Cowell's SYCOtv company. A pilot was made in the United Kingdom in 2005, hosted by Paul O'Grady, but after O'Grady's split with ITV, the series was postponed, resulting in America's Got Talent – the first full series of the format.

It has spawned spin-offs in over 58 countries (as of April 2014), in what is now referred to as the Got Talent format, similar to that described by FremantleMedia of the Idol and The X Factor formats. In April 2014, the format was named the world's most successful reality TV format ever by the Guinness World Records.

History

Got Talent was an invention by The X Factor creator Simon Cowell, with comedian and talk show host Paul O'Grady producing a pilot for ITV in 2005 under the provisional title Paul O'Grady's Got Talent. O'Grady left the network after disputes with ITV, resulting in Cowell moving the concept to the United States while he and ITV searched for a new show host.

Due to these issues, the Got Talent franchise ended up debuting first as America's Got Talent on NBC on 21 June 2006, with judges David Hasselhoff, Brandy Norwood, and Piers Morgan. The show's original series was hosted by Regis Philbin. In 2016, the judging panel consisted of Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Melanie Brown, and Simon Cowell, and hosted by Nick Cannon, who has been the presenter since 2009. The grand prize on America's Got Talent is $1 million, and, since season 3, a chance to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip. America's Got Talent proved extremely successful for NBC, pulling in high ratings in both total viewers and the younger 18-49 demographic. The show's initial success in America is credited with the eventual launch of the British series, and the overall global launch of the Got Talent franchise.

America's Got Talent

America's Got Talent (sometimes abbreviated as AGT) is an American reality television series on the NBC television network, and part of the global British Got Talent franchise. It is a talent show that features singers, dancers, magicians, comedians, and other performers of all ages competing for the advertised top prize of one million dollars. The show debuted in June 2006 for the summer television season. From season three (2008) onwards, the prize includes the one million dollars, payable in a financial annuity over 40 years, and a chance to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip. Among its significant features is that it gives an opportunity to talented amateurs or unknown performers, with the results decided by an audience vote. The format is a popular one and has often been reworked for television in the United States and the United Kingdom.

This incarnation was created by Simon Cowell, and was originally due to be a 2005 British series called Paul O'Grady's Got Talent but was postponed due to O'Grady's acrimonious split with broadcaster ITV (later launching as Britain's Got Talent in 2007). As such, the American version became the first full series of the franchise.

Puddles Pity Party

Puddles Pity Party is an American musical band fronted by "Big" Mike Geier (born December 3rd, 1980) as Puddles the Clown. The band includes Geier's wife Amy Motzl as the chimp-girl Monkey Zuma. The Puddles character was created in 1999 for the all-clown band called Greasepaint out of Atlanta. Puddles Pity Party is best known for appearing in several viral videos on YouTube since 2013, most notably with Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox. As Puddles, Geier is noted for his distinctive whiteface clown costume as well as his unusually tall height of 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m). Geier's baritone singing voice has been compared favorably with traditional popular singers such as Tom Jones.

Puddles appeared in Geier's "Dames Aflame" showgirl revue after Geier and Newton wrote material for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Puddles performed in Aqua Teen Hunger Force's 2010 tour. In 2011 Puddles regularly appeared in vaudevillian cabaret at Teatro ZinZanni

In 2013, Puddles opened for Eels during their U.S. and European tour. In October 2013, Puddles recorded a cover of Lorde's "Royals" with Postmodern Jukebox. As of July 2015 the video has received over 14.4 million hits on YouTube. Puddles has collaborated with Bradlee on YouTube several times since.

Pity Party (Melanie Martinez song)

"Pity Party" is a song by American recording artist Melanie Martinez as the leading single from her debut album, Cry Baby. A music video was released June 1, 2015.

Background and composition

"Pity Party" was released by retailers on June 2, 2015 as the leading single from Melanie's upcoming debut album, Cry Baby. The song uses an interpolation of Lesley Gore’s classic “It’s My Party“, released in 1963.

Regarding her song, she said, "This was during my second session with Kara DioGuardi. It was awesome to write that song because I love music from the 50s and 60s. When I was singing, Kara said my voice reminded her of Judy Garland and artists from that time. I really wanted to write about no one showing up to my birthday party and the song is perfect inspiration for this theme. I love samples, especially older songs because they can put a fresh new take on an old song. So we were really inspired by that and we sampled it for the first line of the chorus and that is how 'Pity Party' came about".

Puddle

A puddle is a small accumulation of liquid, usually water, on a surface. It can form either by pooling in a depression on the surface, or by surface tension upon a flat surface.

A puddle is generally shallow enough to walk through, and too small to support a boat or raft. Puddles can be a source of fascination for children. Small wildlife may be attracted to puddles.

Natural puddles and wildlife

Puddles in natural landscapes and habitats, when not resulting from precipitation, can indicate the presence of a seep or spring. They can provide essential moisture for small wildlife, such as birds and insects. Many butterfly (Lepidoptera) species need puddles for mud-puddling to obtain nutrients such as salts and amino acids.

Swallows use the damp loam which gathers in puddles as a form of cement to help to build their nests. The reduction in the number of puddles in the countryside due to intensive farming, urban sprawl, and climate change is partially the cause of a decrease in the swallow population.
