James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006), better known by the stage names J Dilla and Jay Dee, was an American record producer and rapper who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. According to his obituary at NPR.org, he "was one of the music industry's most influential hip-hop artists", working with big-name acts including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, The Roots, The Pharcyde and Common. Yancey died in 2006 of the blood disease thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
James Yancey was the eldest of four children including a sister (Martha) and two brothers (Earl and John), who later began doing music as Illa J. The family lived at a corner house near McDougall and Nevada, on the east side of Detroit. He developed a vast musical knowledge from his parents (his mother is a former opera singer and his father was a jazz bassist). According to his mother, he could "match pitch perfect harmony" by "two-months old", to the amazement of musician friends and relatives. He began collecting vinyl at the age of two and would be allowed to spin records in the park, an activity he enjoyed tremendously as a child.

This vid focuses on how to make J Dilla drums in ableton live, especially in the style of old school Dilla (slum village, tribe, etc.) I talk about Drum selection, the type of swing, velocity and eq'ing amongst other things. This is mostly for Ableton Live users but anybody can take some knowledge from this, regardless which DAW you use. I've doubled down on bringing you guys some quality content and I know you're gonna like this one. I've decided to make real beats for my examples now so you can really see what is involved and the details of it all. Tomorrow's vid will be on sampling and the day after is going to be on making Dilla bass. Enjoy!

"Dilla" by Abstract Orchestra is a tribute to the work of the highly acclaimed and influential producer. Opener"Welcome to Detroit/The Diary"takes the the vocal sample from Isaac Hayes's "Man's Temptation" and places it against lush brass and driving beats while"Workinonit"Transplants the original 10cc guitar samples from the Dilla original onto biting trumpets and aggressive saxes, underpinned as always by Joost Hendrickx's on point drumming. On"Stop"vocalist Anna Uhuru handles the Dionne Warwick vocal with assurance while the band lay down an arrangement that is reminiscent of the work of David Axelrod and Don Sebeskey, both big sources of inspiration for Abstract Orchestra. hip hop, soul, jazzy The late, great J Dilla is rightly celebrated as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, in part because his ear for music was so diverse and expansive. From the smooth, soulful soundbeds he laid down for A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, The Pharcyde, Common, The Roots, and D’Angelo to the hard-edged, synth-heavy tracks he crafted for Busta Rhymes, Jaylib, Oh No, and Phat Kat, Jay Dee’s music continued to grow and evolve throughout his brief time on this planet. As Dilla’s mother Ma Dukes explains, “He didn’t come with a limited capacity, and real producers produce, produce, and produce. There are no formats for genius workers…just non-stop creations.” Now, a fresh batch of those creations will be made available to the world for the first time, in the for...

You got the ticket babe
Yes yes yes you know
The desert could not hold
All the love that I have
In my heart for you
If I could spread it out across the sea
You know my love would cover it all
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Now if the cooks in the kitchen
Had a dress as tight as yours
They would not need a fire
Ain't a word I could say
Just to describe your fine look
That I love and love and desire
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
You got a smile
You got a kiss
You got a heart
And you got a lotta love yeah
A lotta love yeah
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Now if the bees only knew
How sweet your love was
They'd pack up their honey comb
If the birds ever heard how sweet your voice was baby,
They'd pack up their song yeah
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Ain't that a lotta love
For two hearts to have and hold
Baby baby ain't that kindness
Baby baby ain't that kindness
Woman woman ain't that a kindness
Somebody somebody tell me
We got to get it all together people
We got to bring it all together
We got to bring it all together people
We got to bring it all together
You know the desert could not hold
All the love that I have
In my heart for you
