Birmingham (i/ˈbɜːrmɪŋəm/) is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England. It is the largest and most populous British city outside London with 1,101,360 residents (2014 est.), and its population increase of 88,400 residents between the 2001 and 2011 censuses was greater than that of any other British local authority. The city lies within the West Midlands Built-up Area, the third most populous built-up area in the United Kingdom with 2,440,986 residents (2011 census), and its metropolitan area is the United Kingdom's second most populous with 3,701,107 residents (2012 est.) and is also the 9th largest metropolitan area in Europe.
England i/ˈɪŋɡlənd/ is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers much of the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic; and includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight.
The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.
Birmingham City Football Club (/ˈbɜːrmɪŋəm ˈsɪti/, locally /ˈbɜːrmɪŋɡəm/) is a professional association football club based in the city of Birmingham, England. Formed in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, they became Small Heath in 1888, then Birmingham in 1905, finally becoming Birmingham City in 1943. They compete in the Football League Championship, the second tier of league football in England.
As Small Heath, they played in the Football Alliance before becoming founder members and first ever champions of the Football League Second Division. The most successful period in their history was in the 1950s and early 1960s. They achieved their highest finishing position of sixth in the First Division in the 1955–56 season and reached the 1956 FA Cup Final, progressed to the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960 and 1961, and won their first major trophy, the League Cup, in 1963, beating Aston Villa 3–1 on aggregate. They won the latter competition for the second time in 2011. They have played in the top tier of English football for the majority of their history. Their longest period spent outside the top division, between 1986 and 2002, included two brief spells in the third tier of the English League, during which time they twice won the Football League Trophy.
A city centre (or city center) is the commercial, cultural and often the historical, political and geographic heart of a city.
The city centre is the (often historical) area of a city where commerce, entertainment, shopping and political power are concentrated. The term is commonly used in many English-speaking countries and has direct equivalents in many other languages. However, notably, in the United States, the term "downtown" is commonly used to denote a city centre, and in Canada the terms "city centre" and "downtown" are used interchangeably. In Australia, the term "Central Business District" is widely used to refer to the city centre, but usage of the term "City Centre" is increasing, especially in Melbourne.
In many cities, the Central Business District (CBD) is within the city centre, but the concept "city centre" differs from the CBD. The concept of the "CBD" revolves solely around economic and financial power, but the "city centre" also includes historical, political and cultural factors. A clear example is Paris: La Défense is the central business district of Paris, but it is not the city centre. In most larger and/or older cities, the CBD and the city centre will only partially overlap, if at all.
Birmingham city centre is the business, retail and leisure hub of Birmingham, England. Following the removal of the Inner Ring Road, the city centre is newly defined as being the area within the Middle Ring Road. Birmingham City Centre is undergoing massive redevelopment with the Big City Plan. This means there are now nine emerging districts and the city centre is approximately five times bigger.
Following the removal of the Inner Ring Road, which acted as a "concrete collar" "under which pedestrians would be forced to walk through intimidating, dark and stinking underpasses" and prevented the expansion of the city centre, a massive urban regeneration project known as the Big City Plan has begun.
Running through the city centre is the Birmingham Fault, a sandstone ridge. The "High Places" document produced and published by Birmingham City Council encouraged the construction of highrise buildings on the ridge.

The Peaky Blinders were a criminal gang based in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century and, to a lesser extent, in the early 20th century. Philip Gooderson, author of The Gangs of Birmingham, states that the Peaky Blinders originated as a specific gang, but the term later became a generic label. An earlier gang known as the Cheapside Sloggers had evolved in the 1870s, and the term "Sloggers" (meaning fighters) had already become a generic local label for street gangs when the Peaky Blinders emerged at the end of the century in Adderley Street, in the Bordesley and Small Heath areas, which was an extremely deprived slum section of Birmingham at the time. The Peaky Blinders were distinguished by their sartorial style, unlike earlier gangs. Notable members included David Taylor (impri...

Documentary series in which Michael Portillo travels the length and breadth of the country by train. Portillo uses a copy of Victorian cartographer George Bradshaw's Railway Companion to compare and contrast modern Britain with that documented by Bradshaw in the 1840s, visiting recommended points of interest which would have been of interest to the Victorians. George Bradshaw was a cartographer who in 1840 became the first person to produce a comprehensive timetable and travel guide of the railway system in Great Britain, which at the time although extensive, still comprised a series of fragmented and competing railway companies and lines each publishing their own literature. The Pen Museum featured in the Birmingham to Stafford journey the second episode of the 2013 series on BBC2 and B...
A poetic documentary exploring both the bad and good sides of Wolverhampton. Hypnotic and beautiful. Emotionally resonant and powerful, with universal social and political themes emerging from a very local subject. Wolverhampton has been rated by the Lonely Planet travel guide as the “fifth worst city in the world”, and The Telegraph slated the city saying its claim to fame was having “the best-known ring road in the country – because a tramp lived on it.” The place may appear as a black dot next to Birmingham on a satellite map but this simply isn’t so. The devastation of boarded up shops, burned down buildings, litter and graffiti, contrasts with the voice of the people and the view of self-improvement illustrated by the powerfully emotive “Before I die…” wall.
“With gentle humor and a keen eye for detail, Hawes-Davis offers a telling commentary on the American relationship with nature and the open road.” All Movie Guide “A tragicomic portrait of an un-landed gentry in search of a mythical America that is fast giving way to the concrete realities of mass-market placelessness.” Metropolis “Visionary…. fascinating, humane, terrifying, futuristic and very, very, very wry, you’ll never go supermarket in quite the same way again.” kinoKulture “A new reading of the American dream. And thanks to the unobtrusive style of the filmmaking, the viewer is allowed to contemplate a handful of factors concerning retirement, the economy, gluttony, and the inability of some people to stay planted.” www.flickhead.com “An utterly fascinating journey to examin...

Too often services are failing to address the problems faced by women sleeping rough or in invisible homelessness conditions. According to Alexia Murphy (Director at St Mungo’s) “Women make up 26% of people who accessed homelessness services in 2013, which in real numbers is around 10,000 people. At the sharpest end of homelessness, 786 women were recorded sleeping rough in London last year”. The overall number of people recorded sleeping rough has risen by 37% since 2010 and the exact number seems to be much higher. We also know that “there are high levels of vulnerability within the female hom...

“Thoughts change. Ideas change. What doesn’t change? In my opinion, that which doesn’t change makes for the most interesting subject to talk about, because it’s timeless. It’s real. It’s simple.” Birmingham, England, Monday 18 June 2012
Featuring the Birmingham city centre and nearby regions. My wife and I spent this Easter travelling to Birmingham to watch a classical concert. Therefore, I took this opportunity to briefly drive around Birmingham on Good Friday. I certainly did not expect this little traffic going around the second biggest city in England. (the UK, even) Birmingham is currently undergoing a heck of a redevelopment in its city centre. The hotel we stayed at (Copthorne Hotel, Birmingham) was totally surrounded within the construction area, and hence the room price dropped drastically - But we had a pleasant, quiet stay at this four-star hotel!
