Fatal car crash on Fairbairn Avenue, Campbell

A person died after their car crashed into a rock retaining wall on Fairbairn Avenue, Campbell, and caught fire late on Tuesday night.

It appears a silver Mazda sedan came down Mount Ainslie Drive and through the intersection before crashing into the rock retaining wall on Fairbairn Avenue at speed.

ACT Policing Acting Sergeant Stephen Dzido said authorities were called about 10.30pm about the single-vehicle crash.

"The vehicle suffered heavy front end damage as a result of the [crash] into the brick wall," he said.

Firefighters put out the fire, and emergency service workers cut away the top of the car to extract the person, who was the only one in the car at the time. Intensive care paramedics treated the person, however, they died at the scene.

"A occupant of the vehicle has unfortunately died. ACT Policing's Collision and Investigation Reconstruction Team has attended and will prepare a report for the coroner," he said.

Sergeant Dzido said he did not want to reveal the person's gender or age as authorities were contacting their family.

It is the fifth death on Canberra's roads in 2017.

"We just need to remind the community to drive safely, slow down and drive to the conditions. One fatality is far too many for the community to deal with," he said.

"Slow down, drive safely. we all want to get home."

It is the second fatal crash in the same location in just over a year.

A man died in a single vehicle accident crashing into the same wall on March 14, 2016.

Police ask anyone who saw the crash and who has not yet spoken to them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at act.crimestoppers.com.au.
