Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社, Yasaka-jinja), once called Gion Shrine (祇園神社, Gion-jinja), is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan. Situated at the east end of Shijō-dōri (Fourth Avenue), the shrine includes several buildings, including gates, a main hall and a stage.
Initial construction on the Shrine began in 656. The Shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered that Imperial messengers be sent to report important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines; and in 991, Emperor Ichijō added three more shrines to Murakami's list. Three years later in 994, Ichijō refined the scope of that composite list by adding Umenomiya Shrine and Gion Shrine.
From 1871 through 1946, Yasaka Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社), meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
In 869 the mikoshi (divine palanquin) of Gion Shrine were paraded through the streets of Kyoto to ward off an epidemic that had hit the city. This was the beginning of the Gion Matsuri, an annual festival which has become world famous.
Yasaka may refer to:
Kyoto (京都市, Kyōto-shi, pronounced [kʲjoːꜜto.ɕi]; UK /kɪˈoʊtoʊ/, US /kiˈoʊ-/, or /ˈkjoʊ-/) is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.
In Japanese, the city has been called Kyō (京), Miyako (都), or Kyō no Miyako (京の都). In the 11th century, the city was renamed Kyoto ("capital city"), after the Chinese word for capital city, jingdu (京都). After the city of Edo was renamed Tokyo (meaning "Eastern Capital") in 1868, and the seat of the Emperor was transferred there, Kyoto was known for a short time as Saikyō (西京, meaning "Western Capital").
Obsolete spellings for the city's name include Kioto and Meaco. Another term commonly used to refer to the city in the pre-modern period was Keishi (京師), meaning "metropolis" or "capital".

Japan (i/dʒəˈpæn/; Japanese: 日本 Nippon [nip̚põ̞ɴ] or Nihon [nihõ̞ɴ]; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, "State of Japan") is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan's population of 126 million is the world's tenth largest. Approximately 9.1 million people live in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, which is the sixth largest city proper in the OECD. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area with over 35 million residents and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy.
Nishiki Market (錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba) (literally "brocade market") is a marketplace in downtown Kyoto, located on a road one block north and parallel to Shijō Street (四条通, Shijō-dōri) and west of Teramachi Street (寺町通, Teramachi-dōri). Rich with history and tradition, the market is renowned as the place to obtain many of Kyoto's famous foods and goods.

Throughout the popular Gion Festival period in July there are various rituals and forms of entertainment put on all over Kyoto for those who came to see the festival to enjoy and participate in. Folk dances performed by local children, action-packed kagura plays, dynamic drum concerts, and graceful dances by apprentice geisha are only a few of the many performances on stage and in the streets throughout the month. For those who want to watch or participate there are colorful parades and a summer purification ritual as well. Our team stopped by the Omukae Chōchin ritual, the Hanagasa Junkō parade, the Kankōsai portable shrine journey, and the Eki Jinja purification ritual in order to capture the sights and sounds of this famous festival month. Come along with us and get a taste of what ...

Hello guys! Thanks for coming back! ^_^ Here's some things you gotta know about this video: - This video is from spring 2 years ago, when I traveled to Japan with my friend Sophie. I finally got around to editing xD - Our native language is German, and we both speak English and Japanese as well. But we're still learning, so mistakes are bound to happen. Please don't mind them ;) - These are just some videos we took while being there with the intention of maybe uploading them, but we're obviously no professional vloggers so the camerawork isn't the best. Hope you can still enjoy! :) Here's what this video contains: - us arriving in Shinagawa + introduction - walking to Gion, Yasaka shrine - Higashiyama - Kiyomizudera - lots of foodgasms from Sophie ;) There'll be more videos coming up, ...
A walkthrough of the beautiful Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The weather was perfect for a walk around the grounds, and the natural beauty of the place makes it a must visit if you are in the city. Royalty Free music - Osaka Rain Music was added over some of the video due to someone singing a song in the background, and not wanting to risk copyright infringement.
Setsubun is an old Japanese tradition where Japanese greet the spring on February 3rd. One of the main activities is throwing beans to ward off evil and bring in good luck. At temples and shrines many rituals and performances are held. At Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, Geisha apprentices known as Maiko dance and later throw beans to gather crowds on February 2nd and 3rd. This year the second performance was during a snow shower so it really added to the spectacle. I plan to do a longer version of the second performance focusing on the beauty of the snow and the dancing.

My first full day in Kyoto was great. At the end of the day, I decided to visit Yasaka Shrine and Gion district since they are just across the street from each other. I took the bus from Kyoto station to get there. My hopes were to find some geishas that evening, because I got a tip from my fellow hostel traveler that he saw a lot of them the previous night. Well I didn't see much if any, but still worth a visit.

My day 2 in Kyoto was mostly freestyle, I had a vague idea of some places I still wanted to hit. The Higashiyama ward is awesome, I felt like samurai was just going to leap into the sky. This area is a historically preserved and kept the street and building styles of old Kyoto. The pathway ascends up towards a shrine, then a historic buddhist temple called Kiyomizudera. Lots of ways to gain luck here, aside from the typical vendors peddling trinkets wishing you safe travels, or fortune, there lies a "love stone" which challenges visitors to walk blindly straight across the path to a matching rock. If one successfully makes the blind walk, they are granted their wish.. if not, then "it will be long before their love is realized." I stood there watching this poor guy do several attempts, onl...
Decided to check out Yasaka shrine which is home to one of the bigger festivals in Kyoto in the summer, The Gion Festival. Also really popular during the cherry blossom season. While we were they I tried to teach my brother the proper way to pray at a shrine. And I totally failed. But turns out there are quite of few Japanese people who also don't know the correct way! First you throw your coin in the offering box (preferably a 5 or 50), then you bow twice, make a wish, clap twice, and end with another bow. Pretty complicated right? Try praying at a Japanese shrine next time. Check out Yasaka Shrine's homepage: http://www.yasaka-jinja.or.jp/en/ DOGA.TV http://do-ga.tv/ Taking a Trip to Japan? Yasaka Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Kyoto. It was founded over 1350 years ago and is located at the eastern end of Shijo-dori in the popular Gion District.
From the night of December 31, thousands of people visit the Yasaka Shrine, located in Gion, to pray for health and happiness for the New Year. Okera is a medicinal herb (Atractylodes japonica) used in traditional Japanese herb medicine Kanpo. On this Okera Mairi ceremony, the sacred fired kept at the Honden or Shrine Sanctuary is moved to a set of 3 special lanterns (bonfires) called Okera Toro. Using these lanterns, visitors can light special ropes and take the sacred fire home and pass it to their Kamidana (home Shinto altars). People keep spinning the rope to maintain the fire alive. On the last scene, we see the front entrance to the Chion-in Temple, a few minutes before midnight. A walking tour of some of Kyoto's most beautiful temples and shrines in the Gion District and Higashiyama District. You could do this tour all in one day, but realistically, you should take at least two. We visit Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, Kenninji Temple, Yasaka Shrine (and Yasaka Pagoda), and then wind through the preserved streets of the Higashiyama District to Kiyomizudera Temple. These are just a handful of shrines and temples to see in Kyoto. There are so many additional incredible sites and attractions. More videos coming soon. Here are some footage from my first trip in Japan. I stayed one week in Kyoto and it was just surreal. I was flabbergasted with the way japanese society deals with tradition and modernity at the same time. I had the best summer ever, spending most of my time strolling in gardens and temples. Favorite moment was during the tanabata festival on the kamogawa river in Kyoto. The path along the river was illuminated and there were hundreds of bamboos planted there. I got the chance to hang a tanzaku on one of these bamboos. Magical night. I hope I can go back to Japan soon, next year who knows ? :) Xx Music : Ceremony - New Order Air - Alone in Kyoto Fiona Apple - Every single night (Djembé Djembé remix) Snow Patrol - New York Joe Hisaishi - Summer
