I get traders writing me all the time asking how they can better determine market direction. Well to that end I'm going to introduce you to a trading indicator I use from time to time although I don't mention it very often. It's called DMI or Directional Moving Index and it's very good for picking market direction. It fits right in with support and resistance trading.
It's actually a pretty simple indicator to use although it looks a little bit complicated.
Let's take a look at the Settings. We have what they call DMI Positive and DMI negative, represented by these green lines and red lines on the indicator. What DMI Positive measures is Bullish Market Pressure, and of course DMI Negative measures Bullish Market Pressure.
Whichever line is on top is the side of the market that has control over price at that moment. The greater the distance between the two lines, the more influence the upper line has. In this instance right here the green line is well above the red line, suggesting there is a very strong bullish market occurring right now.
Here at another point on the chart, the red line is on top suggesting that the bears have control of the market.
As is the case with all indicators, DMI is also a lagging indicator. The traditional period for DMI is the 14 period default. I change mine to 13 just to make it perhaps a touch faster.
You'll notice that DMI also puts a blue line on the chart. The blue line is actually called the ADX or Average Directional Index. It represents the difference between the DMI Positive and DMI Negative. Yes it can all sound very confusing but what's important to remember is that when the blue (ADX) line is rising, it is indicating a building trend.
DMI is measured on a percentage scale for 0% to 100% and traders will typically put some sort of price threshold down to suggest when the trend has begun. Some traders like to have a very high threshold, like 40%. The idea is that the market is not trrending until the ADX, that's this blue line, has actually breached the 40% threshold.
This sometimes works better in day trading markets when the markets are moving a little faster...it doesn't always work as well for end-of-day trading.
I've gone with a 25% level and all it does is alert me when the market might be starting to build a trend. You'll notice when you go back through your DMI indicator that when you look at these points where the ADX (blue line) gets above the 25% as it did right here on the chart, that we have a very nice trend resulting. Here it dipped down, came back above and we got another push higher.
You'll also notice that a lot of times when the market might actually look a little bit bearish, or perhaps you might not be sure what going on with the price, sometimes DMI might give you that little bit of a tip that you need to decide on direction.
Right here on the chart DMI is just swapping colors back and forth between bulls and bears having control of price. What I'm looking for here is for the blue line to start showing a little bit of upward swing, alerting me to a trend that could be building. Indeed, right now the green line is above the red line suggesting the bulls have control of this marketplace.
Even though we are pretty much bang-on even with our moving average, DMI is suggesting that hey, there might be a push higher coming. In that case, if I'm looking at actually taking a trade here, I'd probably structure it either to take advantage of a breakout above this obvious resistance level or maybe I'll make it a little tighter and take it above the current resistance. (Remember, Resistance is our green-red bar combination)
So, by using a tool such as DMI, I think you'll find that you're going to keep yourself on the right side of the market more often than not...and very often it will tip you off to opportunities that you don't necessarily see - such as what is happening right here on the chart.
It remains to be seen whether or not we are actually going to get a bullish break, but the fact of the matter is we can still set up our trade just in case, and take advantage of the information that we have available to us.
So if you're having trouble picking direction on your trades, if you find yourself getting ready to sell and the market rallies or getting ready to buy and the market declines, maybe you want to put DMI on your charts to get that little extra information as a guage to tell you which side of the market you should be looking at trading.

本文內容：甚麼是DMI、DMI測試
不經不覺，街頭智慧來到第七集，先前已跟大家分享了六個常用的指標。今集將會帶來初班爆升條件中的DMI。對比其他主要的技術指標，DMI偏向冷門，比較少被提及到。到底是甚麼原因令DMI沒有被使用？是它不準確還是太複雜難用？
甚麼是DMI？
DMI (Directional Movement Index)，中文名為動向指數，有別於其他技術指標，動向指數是由三條線組成，分別是ADX、+DI和-DI線。其背後的計算方法亦比其他主流的技術指標不同，是以股價每日的波幅，包括最高及最低位，分析價格的波動而評估資產將來之動向。當+DI線高於-DI線為向上趨勢，反之為下跌趨勢。既然有新趨勢會被觸發，DMI可被用作中線使用的訊號。
DMI測試
坊間為數不多的DMI使用者都將DMI當作MACD或是慢步隨機指數的用法，就如這套策略﹕當+DI升穿-DI時買入，直至+DI跌穿+DI時沽出並做空，回到+DI升穿-DI平倉。
我們先以恆指作測試。
2014-2016年﹕交易49次，勝18次，輸31次，命中率36.73%，賺12.15%
2011-2016年﹕交易127次，勝41次，輸86次，命中率32.28%，蝕2.17%
2006-2016年﹕交易2445次，勝845次，輸160次，命中率34.43%，賺45.41%
標普500指數
2014-2016年﹕交易46次，勝10次，輸35次，命中率21.74%，蝕13.71%
2011-2016年﹕交易136次，勝37次，輸98次，命中率27.21%，蝕45.25%
2006-2016年﹕交易241次，勝62次，輸178次，命中率25.73%，蝕44.37%
兩個指數測試了六個時段，雖然三勝三負，但命中率從未高於40%，低於一半的命中，甚至出現過低於兩成的情況。賺錢能力亦只是一半一半，參考性不高，看似賭大細一樣。
另一DMI測試
其實運用DMI應該先留意趨勢的出現，而三條線中，ADX的用處就是判斷資產價格是否出現趨勢。當ADX高於20時候代表有新趨勢出現﹔相反，低於20時，價格的趨勢應已告終。要是當ADX在20之下時進行交易，勝算是十分低，因為沒有趨勢，價格可能只是在橫行整固。我們進行以下測試﹕當ADX升穿20時，如+DI大於-DI買入資產﹔如-DI大於+DI，做空資產。直至ADX跌穿20時，執行沽出或平倉的行動，如ADX未到20時，+DI跌穿-DI亦會沽出資產﹔-DI跌穿+DI時同樣會平倉，靜待下一次機會。

2014-2016年﹕交易9次，勝3次，輸6次，命中率33.33%，賺16.12%
2011-2016年﹕交易22次，勝7次，輸15次，命中率31.82%，賺1.15%
2006-2016年﹕交易49次，勝18次，輸31次，命中率36.73%，賺38.73%
標普500指數
2014-2016年﹕交易13次，勝0次，輸13次，命中率0%，蝕22.14%
2011-2016年﹕交易29次，勝6次，輸23次，命中率20.69%，蝕30.82%
2006-2016年﹕交易55次，勝18次，輸37次，命中率32.73%，蝕18.2%
雖然加入ADX作買入的指標，但結果卻只有少少改善。難道DMI指標真的是完全不準確嗎？我們試一下用不同的資產測試，嘗試找出更多的線索。
不同資產的DMI測試
石油
2014-2016年﹕交易9次，勝4次，輸5次，命中率44.44%，賺7.51%
2011-2016年﹕交易22次，勝9次，輸13次，命中率40.91%，賺48.24%
2006-2016年﹕交易41次，勝16次，輸25次，命中率39.02%，賺3.15%
黃金
2014-2016年﹕交易11次，勝4次，輸7次，命中率36.36%，蝕3.12%
2011-2016年﹕交易29次，勝11次，輸18次，命中率37.93%，賺6.68%
2006-2016年﹕交易62次，勝23次，輸39次，命中率37.1%，賺18.27%
兩個主要商品的命中率雖不過半，但大多都能賺錢。原因是於大趨勢浪中DMI才能發揮所長，例如在石油2015年及黃金2012-2013年的大跌浪獲利，當時ADX更是超過50，可見趨勢之強。相反在短線中，DMI容易出現錯誤的訊號，造成虧損，令回報慢慢地縮少。
大趨勢是王道
從較長及大型並持續的趨勢中，DMI可以準確捕捉，甚至可以食盡整個大浪而獲利。不過DMI在短線中的盲點甚為明顯，必須配合其他指標使用，例如初班中提及到的爆升條件，找出DMI的爆炸力，發揮其優點。

Screen printing
Screen printing is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.
Screen printing is also a stencil method of print making in which a design is imposed on a screen of polyester or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance. Ink is forced into the mesh openings by the fill blade or squeegee and by wetting the substrate, transferred onto the printing surface during the squeegee stroke. As the screen rebounds away from the substrate the ink remains on the substrate. It is also known as silk-screen, screen, serigraphy, and serigraph printing. One color is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicoloured image or design.

I get traders writing me all the time asking how they can better determine market direction. Well to that end I'm going to introduce you to a trading indicator I use from time to time although I don't mention it very often. It's called DMI or Directional Moving Index and it's very good for picking market direction. It fits right in with support and resistance trading.
It's actually a pretty simple indicator to use although it looks a little bit complicated.
Let's take a look at the Settings. We have what they call DMI Positive and DMI negative, represented by these green lines and red lines on the indicator. What DMI Positive measures is Bullish Market Pressure, and of course DMI Negative measures Bullish Market Pressure.
Whichever line is on top is the side of the market that has control over price at that moment. The greater the distance between the two lines, the more influence the upper line has. In this instance right here the green line is well above the red line, suggesting there is a very strong bullish market occurring right now.
Here at another point on the chart, the red line is on top suggesting that the bears have control of the market.
As is the case with all indicators, DMI is also a lagging indicator. The traditional period for DMI is the 14 period default. I change mine to 13 just to make it perhaps a touch faster.
You'll notice that DMI also puts a blue line on the chart. The blue line is actually called the ADX or Average Directional Index. It represents the difference between the DMI Positive and DMI Negative. Yes it can all sound very confusing but what's important to remember is that when the blue (ADX) line is rising, it is indicating a building trend.
DMI is measured on a percentage scale for 0% to 100% and traders will typically put some sort of price threshold down to suggest when the trend has begun. Some traders like to have a very high threshold, like 40%. The idea is that the market is not trrending until the ADX, that's this blue line, has actually breached the 40% threshold.
This sometimes works better in day trading markets when the markets are moving a little faster...it doesn't always work as well for end-of-day trading.
I've gone with a 25% level and all it does is alert me when the market might be starting to build a trend. You'll notice when you go back through your DMI indicator that when you look at these points where the ADX (blue line) gets above the 25% as it did right here on the chart, that we have a very nice trend resulting. Here it dipped down, came back above and we got another push higher.
You'll also notice that a lot of times when the market might actually look a little bit bearish, or perhaps you might not be sure what going on with the price, sometimes DMI might give you that little bit of a tip that you need to decide on direction.
Right here on the chart DMI is just swapping colors back and forth between bulls and bears having control of price. What I'm looking for here is for the blue line to start showing a little bit of upward swing, alerting me to a trend that could be building. Indeed, right now the green line is above the red line suggesting the bulls have control of this marketplace.
Even though we are pretty much bang-on even with our moving average, DMI is suggesting that hey, there might be a push higher coming. In that case, if I'm looking at actually taking a trade here, I'd probably structure it either to take advantage of a breakout above this obvious resistance level or maybe I'll make it a little tighter and take it above the current resistance. (Remember, Resistance is our green-red bar combination)
So, by using a tool such as DMI, I think you'll find that you're going to keep yourself on the right side of the market more often than not...and very often it will tip you off to opportunities that you don't necessarily see - such as what is happening right here on the chart.
It remains to be seen whether or not we are actually going to get a bullish break, but the fact of the matter is we can still set up our trade just in case, and take advantage of the information that we have available to us.
So if you're having trouble picking direction on your trades, if you find yourself getting ready to sell and the market rallies or getting ready to buy and the market declines, maybe you want to put DMI on your charts to get that little extra information as a guage to tell you which side of the market you should be looking at trading.

DMI測試
坊間為數不多的DMI使用者都將DMI當作MACD或是慢步隨機指數的用法，就如這套策略﹕當+DI升穿-DI時買入，直至+DI跌穿+DI時沽出並做空，回到+DI升穿-DI平倉。
我們先以恆指作測試。
2014-2016年﹕交易49次，勝18次，輸31次，命中率36.73%，賺12.15%
2011-2016年﹕交易127次，勝41次，輸86次，命中率32.28%，蝕2.17%
2006-2016年﹕交易2445次，勝845次，輸160次，命中率34.43%，賺45.41%
標普500指數
2014-2016年﹕交易46次，勝10次，輸35次，命中率21.74%，蝕13.71%
2011-2016年﹕交易136次，勝37次，輸98次，命中率27.21%，蝕45.25%
2006-2016年﹕交易241次，勝62次，輸178次，命中率25.73%，蝕44.37%
兩個指數測試了六個時段，雖然三勝三負，但命中率從未高於40%，低於一半的命中，甚至出現過低於兩成的情況。賺錢能力亦只是一半一半，參考性不高，看似賭大細一樣。
另一DMI測試
其實運用DMI應該先留意趨勢的出現，而三條線中，ADX的用處就是判斷資產價格是否出現趨勢。當ADX高於20時候代表有新趨勢出現﹔相反，低於20時，價格的趨勢應已告終。要是當ADX在20之下時進行交易，勝算是十分低，因為沒有趨勢，價格可能只是在橫行整固。我們進行以下測試﹕當ADX升穿20時，如+DI大於-DI買入資產﹔如-DI大於+DI，做空資產。直至ADX跌穿20時，執行沽出或平倉的行動，如ADX未到20時，+DI跌穿-DI亦會沽出資產﹔-DI跌穿+DI時同樣會平倉，靜待下一次機會。
恆指
2014-2016年﹕交易9次，勝3次，輸6次，命中率33.33%，賺16.12%
2011-2016年﹕交易22次，勝7次，輸15次，命中率31.82%，賺1.15%
2006-2016年﹕交易49次，勝18次，輸31次，命中率36.73%，賺38.73%
標普500指數
2014-2016年﹕交易13次，勝0次，輸13次，命中率0%，蝕22.14%
2011-2016年﹕交易29次，勝6次，輸23次，命中率20.69%，蝕30.82%
2006-2016年﹕交易55次，勝18次，輸37次，命中率32.73%，蝕18.2%
雖然加入ADX作買入的指標，但結果卻只有少少改善。難道DMI指標真的是完全不準確嗎？我們試一下用不同的資產測試，嘗試找出更多的線索。
不同資產的DMI測試
石油
2014-2016年﹕交易9次，勝4次，輸5次，命中率44.44%，賺7.51%
2011-2016年﹕交易22次，勝9次，輸13次，命中率40.91%，賺48.24%
2006-2016年﹕交易41次，勝16次，輸25次，命中率39.02%，賺3.15%
黃金
2014-2016年﹕交易11次，勝4次，輸7次，命中率36.36%，蝕3.12%
2011-2016年﹕交易29次，勝11次，輸18次，命中率37.93%，賺6.68%
2006-2016年﹕交易62次，勝23次，輸39次，命中率37.1%，賺18.27%
兩個主要商品的命中率雖不過半，但大多都能賺錢。原因是於大趨勢浪中DMI才能發揮所長，例如在石油2015年及黃金2012-2013年的大跌浪獲利，當時ADX更是超過50，可見趨勢之強。相反在短線中，DMI容易出現錯誤的訊號，造成虧損，令回報慢慢地縮少。
大趨勢是王道
從較長及大型並持續的趨勢中，DMI可以準確捕捉，甚至可以食盡整個大浪而獲利。不過DMI在短線中的盲點甚為明顯，必須配合其他指標使用，例如初班中提及到的爆升條件，找出DMI的爆炸力，發揮其優點。

不經不覺，街頭智慧來到第七集，先前已跟大家分享了六個常用的指標。今集將會帶來初班爆升條件中的DMI。對比其他主要的技術指標，DMI偏向冷門，比較少被提及到。到底是甚麼原因令DMI沒有被使用？是它不準確還是太複雜難用？
甚麼是DMI？
DMI (Directional Movement Index)，中文名為動向指數，有別於其他技術指標，動向指數是由三條線組成，分別是ADX、+DI和-DI線。其背後的計算方法亦比其他主流的技術指標不同，是以股價每日的波幅，包括最高及最低位，分析價格的波動而評估資產將來之動向。當+DI線高於-DI線為向上趨勢，反之為下跌趨勢。既然有新趨勢會被觸發，DMI可被用作中線使用的訊號。
DMI測試
坊間為數不多的DMI使用者都將DMI當作MACD或是慢步隨機指數的用法，就如這套策略﹕當+DI升穿-DI時買入，直至+DI跌穿+DI時沽出並做空，回到+DI升穿-DI平倉。
我們先以恆指作測試。
2014-2016年﹕交易49次，勝18次，輸31次，命中率36.73%，賺12.15%
2011-2016年﹕交易127次，勝41次，輸86次，命中率32.28%，蝕2.17%
2006-2016年﹕交易2445次，勝845次，輸160次，命中率34.43%，賺45.41%
標普500指數
2014-2016年﹕交易46次，勝10次，輸35次，命中率21.74%，蝕13.71%
2011-2016年﹕交易136次，勝37次，輸98次，命中率27.21%，蝕45.25%
2006-2016年﹕交易241次，勝62次，輸178次，命中率25.73%，蝕44.37%
兩個指數測試了六個時段，雖然三勝三負，但命中率從未高於40%，低於一半的命中，甚至出現過低於兩成的情況。賺錢能力亦只是一半一半，參考性不高，看似賭大細一樣。
另一DMI測試
其實運用DMI應該先留意趨勢的出現，而三條線中，ADX的用處就是判斷資產價格是否出現趨勢。當ADX高於20時候代表有新趨勢出現﹔相反，低於20時，價格的趨勢應已告終。要是當ADX在20之下時進行交易，勝算是十分低，因為沒有趨勢，價格可能只是在橫行整固。我們進行以下測試﹕當ADX升穿20時，如+DI大於-DI買入資產﹔如-DI大於+DI，做空資產。直至ADX跌穿20時，執行沽出或平倉的行動，如ADX未到20時，+DI跌穿-DI亦會沽出資產﹔-DI跌穿+DI時同樣會平倉，靜待下一次機會。
恆指
2014-2016年﹕交易9次，勝3次，輸6次，命中率33.33%，賺16.12%
2011-2016年﹕交易22次，勝7次，輸15次，命中率31.82%，賺1.15%
2006-2016年﹕交易49次，勝18次，輸31次，命中率36.73%，賺38.73%
標普500指數
2014-2016年﹕交易13次，勝0次，輸13次，命中率0%，蝕22.14%
2011-2016年﹕交易29次，勝6次，輸23次，命中率20.69%，蝕30.82%
2006-2016年﹕交易55次，勝18次，輸37次，命中率32.73%，蝕18.2%
雖然加入ADX作買入的指標，但結果卻只有少少改善。難道DMI指標真的是完全不準確嗎？我們試一下用不同的資產測試，嘗試找出更多的線索。
不同資產的DMI測試
石油
2014-2016年﹕交易9次，勝4次，輸5次，命中率44.44%，賺7.51%
2011-2016年﹕交易22次，勝9次，輸13次，命中率40.91%，賺48.24%
2006-2016年﹕交易41次，勝16次，輸25次，命中率39.02%，賺3.15%
黃金
2014-2016年﹕交易11次，勝4次，輸7次，命中率36.36%，蝕3.12%
2011-2016年﹕交易29次，勝11次，輸18次，命中率37.93%，賺6.68%
2006-2016年﹕交易62次，勝23次，輸39次，命中率37.1%，賺18.27%
兩個主要商品的命中率雖不過半，但大多都能賺錢。原因是於大趨勢浪中DMI才能發揮所長，例如在石油2015年及黃金2012-2013年的大跌浪獲利，當時ADX更是超過50，可見趨勢之強。相反在短線中，DMI容易出現錯誤的訊號，造成虧損，令回報慢慢地縮少。
大趨勢是王道
從較長及大型並持續的趨勢中，DMI可以準確捕捉，甚至可以食盡整個大浪而獲利。不過DMI在短線中的盲點甚為明顯，必須配合其他指標使用，例如初班中提及到的爆升條件，找出DMI的爆炸力，發揮其優點。
