Up here in the mountains, this thunderstorm just got real. The thunder rumbles across the jagged landscape. Rain pelts down on the cabin porch in an even rhythm. The 2008 Queensland storms were a series of three thunderstorms that struck South East Queensland. The first storm hit on 16 November 2008 and was followed by two further storms on 19 and 20 November. The storms resulted in 2 fatalities.
Winds reached 130 kilometres (81 mi)/h,[1] equivalent to a Category 3 cyclone. Electricity was cut to about 230,000 homes and about 4,000 homes were left in need of serious repair, and at least 30 houses were beyond repair. Some of the worst hit areas included The Gap, Kenmore, Arana Hills and Albany Creek. Forecasters at the Bureau of Meteorology rated the storm the worst to hit south-east Queensland since 2004 & The Biggest to The South east Queensland region since 1985.

A tornado warned storm and severe weather rocked the area just to the south of the Saint Cloud metro area this morning with extreme high winds and vivid lightning.
The footage starts out showing the tornado warned storm just to the south of the town of Kimball, MN with the Lightning, high winds and heavy rain hitting the area.
The second half of the video is the damage in Waite Park, MN where the area was slammed by straight line winds that damaged several homes and knocked power out to a large part of the Saint Cloud metro area.

Silent Storms is my fourth consecutive aurora/astro film. In a way Silent Storms shows how the night skies can be during the three seasons we have darkness here in northern arctic Scandinavia; autumn, winter and spring. It was filmed in Norway, Finland and Sweden, primarily around the Tromsø area, Norway.
The "storms" referred to, are the geomagnetic storms which takes place in the atmosphere when a strong solar wind hits earth, often followed by a CME. When a geomagnetic storms takes place, it can last for days, with several substorms causing auroras to appear. Although there has been reports of audible auroras, this has yet to be proven scientifically.
Shooting through these different seasons raises different challenges, and opportunities. Late august/early september you are still battling against the sun, with the skies appearing very bluish. When the sun finally is low enough beneath the horizon, and there is still no snow, you have pitch black darkness, and it is difficult to use and lit foregrounds properly, unless the moon is present. At this period, I find using silhouettes exciting. When winter has settled you have the most beautiful period, with snow coverd trees, icy reflective grounds, partially frozen rivers etc. In March/April when spring arrives, sun is coming back, causing bluish skies again, but you also get beautiful colors from the sun in the horizon to combine with auroras, if lucky.
Shooting milky ways/startrails this far in the northern hemisphere is challenging as well. First because of the obvious that we cannot see the strongest parts of the milky way up here, but also because there always seem to be som auroras "interfering" when you're planning to shoot an astro shot, even if activity is reported to be low.
The film is made primarly of stills, two sequences are realtime video (03:17 and 03:38). The still sequences has been slowed down in post to a speed I feel is representative for a fast to to normal authentic moving aurora, although still to a speed/length which allows fitting the sequences within the timeframe of such a short video.
Some sequences was added panning to using motion control and rails from Dynamic Perception.
This video is in HD video 720p, but the film is available in full HD 1080p, and 4K/UHD, please contact for licensing inquiries.
Shot using Canon DSLRs + lenses. The realtime sequences was shot in RAW 14bit video using Magic Lantern Firmware on the 5D Mark III.

Storms generally lead to negative impacts on lives and property such as storm surge, heavy rain or snow (causing flooding or road impassibility), lightning, wildfires, and vertical wind shear; however, systems with significant rainfall can alleviate drought in places they move through. Heavy snowfall can allow special recreational activities to take place which would not be possible otherwise, such as skiing and snowmobiling.
The English word comes from Proto-Germanic *sturmaz meaning "noise, tumult".

Tony Anderson
Anthony 'Tony' Anderson (born 31 January 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the VFL during the 1960s.
Anderson made his VFL debut with Melbourne in 1963 and would form an important part of their defence throughout the rest of the decade. He was a half back flanker in Melbourne's 1964 premiership side and by the time he retired in 1969 had amassed 75 league games.

Silent Storms is my fourth consecutive aurora/astro film. In a way Silent Storms shows how the night skies can be during the three seasons we have darkness here in northern arctic Scandinavia; autumn, winter and spring. It was filmed in Norway, Finland and Sweden, primarily around the Tromsø area, Norway. The "storms" referred to, are the geomagnetic storms which takes place in the atmosphere when a strong solar wind hits earth, often followed by a CME. When a geomagnetic storms takes place, it can last for days, with several substorms causing auroras to appear. Although there has been reports of audible auroras, this has yet to be proven scientifically. Shooting through these different seasons raises different challenges, and opportunities. Late august/early september you are still battling against the sun, with the skies appearing very bluish. When the sun finally is low enough beneath the horizon, and there is still no snow, you have pitch black darkness, and it is difficult to use and lit foregrounds properly, unless the moon is present. At this period, I find using silhouettes exciting. When winter has settled you have the most beautiful period, with snow coverd trees, icy reflective grounds, partially frozen rivers etc. In March/April when spring arrives, sun is coming back, causing bluish skies again, but you also get beautiful colors from the sun in the horizon to combine with auroras, if lucky. Shooting milky ways/startrails this far in the northern hemisphere is challenging as well. First because of the obvious that we cannot see the strongest parts of the milky way up here, but also because there always seem to be som auroras "interfering" when you're planning to shoot an astro shot, even if activity is reported to be low. The film is made primarly of stills, two sequences are realtime video (03:17 and 03:38). The still sequences has been slowed down in post to a speed I feel is representative for a fast to to normal authentic moving aurora, although still to a speed/length which allows fitting the sequences within the timeframe of such a short video. Some sequences was added panning to using motion control and rails from Dynamic Perception. This video is in HD video 720p, but the film is available in full HD 1080p, and 4K/UHD, please contact for licensing inquiries. Shot using Canon DSLRs + lenses. The realtime sequences was shot in RAW 14bit video using Magic Lantern Firmware on the 5D Mark III. The 2008 Queensland storms were a series of three thunderstorms that struck South East Queensland. The first storm hit on 16 November 2008 and was followed by two further storms on 19 and 20 November. The storms resulted in 2 fatalities. Winds reached 130 kilometres (81 mi)/h,[1] equivalent to a Category 3 cyclone. Electricity was cut to about 230,000 homes and about 4,000 homes were left in need of serious repair, and at least 30 houses were beyond repair. Some of the worst hit areas included The Gap, Kenmore, Arana Hills and Albany Creek. Forecasters at the Bureau of Meteorology rated the storm the worst to hit south-east Queensland since 2004 & The Biggest to The South east Queensland region since 1985. Wikipedia. A tornado warned storm and severe weather rocked the area just to the south of the Saint Cloud metro area this morning with extreme high winds and vivid lightning. The footage starts out showing the tornado warned storm just to the south of the town of Kimball, MN with the Lightning, high winds and heavy rain hitting the area. We had 4 awesome days before the arrival of Xaver, a hurricane that caused havoc in Britain and roughend up the sea at Camilla Kemps favorite surf sites on the Portuguese coast. On August 4th 2008 powerful storms rolled through Chicago. What you're viewing is in sequential order. It was pretty interesting how the storm had so many stages and different looks to it. After it's all said and done two separate storms made there way through the city. The first had very high winds and torrential rain. A tornado warned storm and severe weather rocked the area just to the south of the Saint Cloud metro area this morning with extreme high winds and vivid lightning.
The footage starts out showing the tornado warned storm just to the south of the town of Kimball, MN with the Lightning, high winds and heavy rain hitting the area.
The second half of the video is the damage in Waite Park, MN where the area was slammed by straight line winds that damaged several homes and knocked power out to a large part of the Saint Cloud metro area.

Silent Storms is my fourth consecutive aurora/astro film. In a way Silent Storms shows how the night skies can be during the three seasons we have darkness here in northern arctic Scandinavia; autumn, winter and spring. It was filmed in Norway, Finland and Sweden, primarily around the Tromsø area, Norway.
The "storms" referred to, are the geomagnetic storms which takes place in the atmosphere when a strong solar wind hits earth, often followed by a CME. When a geomagnetic storms takes place, it can last for days, with several substorms causing auroras to appear. Although there has been reports of audible auroras, this has yet to be proven scientifically.
Shooting through these different seasons raises different challenges, and opportunities. Late august/early september you are still battling against the sun, with the skies appearing very bluish. When the sun finally is low enough beneath the horizon, and there is still no snow, you have pitch black darkness, and it is difficult to use and lit foregrounds properly, unless the moon is present. At this period, I find using silhouettes exciting. When winter has settled you have the most beautiful period, with snow coverd trees, icy reflective grounds, partially frozen rivers etc. In March/April when spring arrives, sun is coming back, causing bluish skies again, but you also get beautiful colors from the sun in the horizon to combine with auroras, if lucky.
Shooting milky ways/startrails this far in the northern hemisphere is challenging as well. First because of the obvious that we cannot see the strongest parts of the milky way up here, but also because there always seem to be som auroras "interfering" when you're planning to shoot an astro shot, even if activity is reported to be low.
The film is made primarly of stills, two sequences are realtime video (03:17 and 03:38). The still sequences has been slowed down in post to a speed I feel is representative for a fast to to normal authentic moving aurora, although still to a speed/length which allows fitting the sequences within the timeframe of such a short video.
Some sequences was added panning to using motion control and rails from Dynamic Perception.
This video is in HD video 720p, but the film is available in full HD 1080p, and 4K/UHD, please contact for licensing inquiries.
Shot using Canon DSLRs + lenses. The realtime sequences was shot in RAW 14bit video using Magic Lantern Firmware on the 5D Mark III.

In December 2013 I traveled to Portugal to film a Surf Video with Camilla Kemp. We had 4 awesome days before the arrival of Xaver, a hurricane that caused havoc in Britain and roughend up the sea at Camilla Kemps favorite surf sites on the Portuguese coast.
Despite mixed weather conditions and not so perfect waves, we captured good surf and had tons of fun with Camillas friends and family.

For quite a few years now I've been wanting to do something different with my time-lapse films. I love color. Storms are full of color. The blues, the greens, the warm oranges and reds at sunset. The colors are sometimes what make a simple storm into something extra special.
But black and white speaks to my soul. I love it. There is something when you remove the color that lets you truly see the textures, movement and emotion of a storm.
And then you hear a song. I had asked my buddy Jay Worsley (https://vimeo.com/jayworsley) if he had heard anything lately that might rock for a black and white storm film, and he linked me to Tony Anderson's "The Way Home." The moment I heard it, I knew that was the song. My recent films have a frantic pace to them and people occasionally tell me they'd love to see the footage in a much slower speed. I already knew that going with the monochrome style sorta demanded something more solemn and poetic...and the song was perfect for that.
I also went with a much wider aspect ratio than I've ever done before. I feel like it actually feels like it brings you in closer to the action, almost like you were standing right there with me.
I held myself back for a long time in doing this project because I wasn't very knowledgable about using tools like Premiere Pro to color grade footage, and all I thought was that I'd have to re-render all my clips as black and white before doing the film. And that's a lot of work. But the past few years have brought me tons of experience in Premiere Pro, plus help from my buddy Jay, and I figured out how to do it all there and without a ton of effort.
The film is made up of some of my favorite clips from the past few years. A mix of the monsoon and supercell plains chasing. I'm so inspired by the songs I choose for these videos. Kerry Muzzey, Tony Anderson. Their songs are so powerful and moving and the stories they tell themselves are amazing. I went with clips that felt right with each beat of the song and while I usually try to tell a story with these films, I mostly decided to let the music be that here.
Thanks to Tony Anderson for such an incredible piece of music, and to Jay for pointing it out to me. And also to my friend and fellow time-lapser, Brian Miner (see him on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/bdmphoto), who did some B&W; work this past fall and reminded me of what I've wanted to do for so long now.
I hope you enjoy this! The creative juices were flowing and I also have some serious withdrawals from chasing storms. I HAD to work on something to hold me over until spring gets here. Only around four months to go before I hit the road to chase supercells and tornadoes in April, May and June!
