In western Christian theology, atonement describes how human beings can be reconciled to God through Christ's sacrificial death. Atonement refers to the forgiving or pardoning of sin in general and original sin in particular through the death and resurrection of Jesus, enabling the reconciliation between God and his creation. Within Christianity there are, historically, three or four main theories for how such atonement might work:
Mercy (Middle English, from Anglo-French merci, from Medieval Latin merced-, merces, from Latin, "price paid, wages", from merc-, merxi "merchandise") is a broad term that refers to benevolence, forgiveness and kindness in a variety of ethical, religious, social and legal contexts.
The concept of a "Merciful God" appears in various religions, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Performing acts of mercy as a component of religious beliefs is also emphasized through actions such as the giving of alms, and care for the sick and Works of Mercy.
In the social and legal context, mercy may refer both to compassionate behavior on the part of those in power (e.g. mercy shown by a judge toward a convict), or on the part of a humanitarian third party, e.g., a mission of mercy aiming to treat war victims.
Mercy is one of the basic virtues of chivalry, Hinduism, Christian ethics, Islam, and Judaism. It is also related to concepts of justice and morality in behavior between people.
Richard Duane "Rick" Warren (born January 28, 1954) is an American evangelical Christian pastor and author. He is the founder and senior pastor of Saddleback Church, an evangelical megachurch in Lake Forest, California, that is the eighth-largest church in the United States. (including multi-site churches). He is also a bestselling author of many Christian books, including his guide to church ministry and evangelism, The Purpose Driven Church, which has spawned a series of conferences on Christian ministry and evangelism. He is perhaps best known for the subsequent book The Purpose Driven Life which has sold more than 30 million copies, making Warren a New York Times bestselling author.
Warren holds conservative theological views and traditional evangelical views on social issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, abstinence-only education over the use of condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS, and embryonic stem-cell research.
During the 2008 United States presidential election, Warren hosted the Civil Forum on The Presidency at his church with both presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama. Obama later sparked controversy when he asked Warren to give the invocation at the presidential inauguration in January 2009.
The Mercy of God (French: La Pitié de Dieu) is a 1961 novel by the French writer Jean Cau. It tells the story of four murderers—a doctor, a boxer, a workman and a gambler—who share a prison cell and tell their respective stories. An English translation by Richard Howard was published in 1963.
The novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt.
Hans Koningsberger of The Saturday Review called the book "a splendid novel", and wrote: "The tradition of the book is very Sartrian and very French[.] Cau has continued and greatly contributed to this pattern rather than emulated it. The formula may sound pat, the book is fresh and original." The critic continued: "I objected, at least in this translation, to the similarity in speech between four men of such vastly different background, but, apart from that—a minor point—this novel deserves nothing but praise."
http://www.saddleback.com/MiracleofMercy — Because we’re imperfect people that live in an imperfect world, we all experience failure in life. The night Jesus was arrested, two of his best friends had massive failures: Judas betrayed Jesus, and Peter denied him three times. In this message at Saddleback Church, Pastor Rick Warren looks at how God’s mercy helps us overcome and move through our failures. He examines the differing responses between Peter and Judas to failure. You will discover the answer to three key questions: What causes personal failure? What should I do when I fail? And what does Jesus do when I fail? Join a Miracle of Mercy small group and study God's mercy with others. Visit http://saddleback.com/miracleofmercy to learn more. I'm still horrible at positioning. Color codes: Kogeinu = Green (He's the brown-haired guy) 96neko = Yellow/Orange (She's the blonde girl) vipTenchou = Purple/pink (He's the red-head.) Fr. William Casey gives a talk for a retreat June 17 - 19 at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center called "In Our Lord's own Words: The Divine Mercy" based on the words of Our Lord to St. Faustina that he compiled from her Diary and recorded on a set of CDs he recently published. This talk is titled "God Have Mercy on Us." In the face of so much collapse of faith and morals in recent decades, Father exhorts us to ask for God's Mercy and to lovingly and respectfully give people the message of the Gospel even when it may not be pleasant or convenient to do so. This is because the greatest mercy you can show people is to be concerned with their eternal salvation. We should relight the flame of faith by becoming saints. More notes below. His mercy
God's mercy
When I think of what I've done today
That I should not have done today
When I think of what I thought today
That I should not have thought today
Lord I thank You for mercy
Lord I thank You for mercy
Lord I thank You for mercy, today
When I think of what I thought today,
that I should not have thought today
When I think of what I said today,
that I should not have said today
When I think of what I wanted today,
when I think of how I acted today
When I think of how I felt today,
when I think of where I went today
When I think of what I thought today,
that I should not have thought today
Lord I thank You for mercy
