This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Michelle shares her personal journey towards Unconditional Positive Regard and self acceptance through the lens of parenting. This is a story about relationships and ultimately the relationship you have with yourself.
Michelle Charfen has had a lifelong passion for learning. She was fascinated by the human body and from an early age dreamt of becoming a physician. In high school, she began tutoring students, discovering a love of facilitating learning for others as well. She would eventually study Human Biology as an undergraduate at Stanford, teach preschool during the summer vacations, and spend the year after graduation teaching at an elementary school in East Palo Alto.
Michelle’s childhood dream was finally realized upon attending Harvard Medical School. She then completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a research fellowship during which she obtained a Masters of Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at UCLA. Teaching medical students and residents in an academic environment was perfectly suited to her enthusiasm for constant learning. In 2008, she stepped down from her faculty position as an Assistant Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine to devote this period of life to her growing family while continuing to work part time in Emergency Medicine.
Her personal journey, struggles, and successes as a parent organically led to an interest in supporting other families. Michelle completed the Parent Educator Certification Program through Echo Parenting and Education, and now combines this training with her previous experience and knowledge to help others learn effective tools for compassionate communication.

In this talk, former US Marine Eric Yarger gives us some insights into how he came to go to war, how it changed him, and how he found his road to acceptance.
From 2002 to 2014 Eric served as a US Marine. First as a Reconnaissance Marine and then as a Marine Raider with Marine Force Special Operations Command. He completed six combat deployments: four to Iraq and two to Afghanistan, including the invasion of Iraq and Operation Vigilant Resolve, as well as broad combat operations in Afghanistan. He has three awards for valour in combat, including Bronze Star with a V.
He is co-founder and Operations Director for NOVOMODUS a company that delivers change management, leadership and security solutions to organisations seeking effective and strategic change. He is also the country manager and trainer for Getting More Australia, training high-stakes negotiation to a broad range of clients from Google to Special Operations and Intelligence organisations throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
He lives in Canberra with his wife and two children and the dog he brought home from Afghanistan.

Yes, I'm aware they use slings/winches to move hospital patients for many reasons, not just obesity. There are "no-lift" rules in place in many countries and not just for big patients - my point is that the diseases and complications caused by obesity mean you're more likely to land in hospital, unable to walk or stand up by yourself, thus increasing the chances you'll need a sling/winch.

Acceptance
Acceptance in human psychology is a person's assent to the reality of a situation, recognizing a process or condition (often a negative or uncomfortable situation) without attempting to change it, protest. The concept is close in meaning to 'acquiescence', derived from the Latin 'acquiēscere' (to find rest in).
Definition
The term acceptance is a noun with three different meanings.
The first is the act of taking or receiving something offered. For example, if someone is giving you a gift and you receive it, then you have accepted the gift; therefore, having acceptance.
Another definition of acceptance has to do with positive welcome and belonging; favor and endorsement. For instance, a person could like someone and have acceptance for them due to their approval of that person.
The third description of acceptance is that it can be an act of believing or assenting.
Acceptance - "An express act or implication by conduct that manifests assent to the terms of an offer in a manner invited or required by the offer so that a binding contract is formed. The exercise of power conferred by an offer by performance of some act. The act of a person to whom something is offered of tendered by another, whereby the offered demonstrates through an act invited by the offer an intention of retaining the subject of the offer." (Chirelstein, 2001)

Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle (/ˈɛkɑːrt ˈtɒlə/ EK-art TO-lə; German pronunciation: [ˈɛkaʁt ˈtɔlə], born Ulrich Leonard Tölle on February 16, 1948) is a German-born resident of Canada, best known as the author of The Power of Now and A New Earth: Awakening to your Life's Purpose. In 2011, he was listed by the Watkins Review as the most spiritually influential person in the world. In 2008, a New York Times writer called Tolle "the most popular spiritual author in the United States".
Tolle has said that he was depressed for much of his life until he underwent, at age 29, an "inner transformation". He then spent several years wandering and unemployed "in a state of deep bliss" before becoming a spiritual teacher. Later, he moved to North America where he began writing his first book, The Power of Now, which was published in 1997 and reached the New York Times Best Seller lists in 2000.
The Power of Now and A New Earth sold an estimated three million and five million copies respectively in North America by 2009. In 2008, approximately 35 million people participated in a series of 10 live webinars with Tolle and television talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Tolle is not identified with any particular religion, but he has been influenced by a wide range of spiritual works. He has lived in Vancouver, British Columbia since 1995.

In this talk, former US Marine Eric Yarger gives us some insights into how he came to go to war, how it changed him, and how he found his road to acceptance. From 2002 to 2014 Eric served as a US Marine. First as a Reconnaissance Marine and then as a Marine Raider with Marine Force Special Operations Command. He completed six combat deployments: four to Iraq and two to Afghanistan, including the invasion of Iraq and Operation Vigilant Resolve, as well as broad combat operations in Afghanistan. He has three awards for valour in combat, including Bronze Star with a V. He is co-founder and Operations Director for NOVOMODUS a company that delivers change management, leadership and security solutions to organisations seeking effective and strategic change. He is also the country manager and trainer for Getting More Australia, training high-stakes negotiation to a broad range of clients from Google to Special Operations and Intelligence organisations throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He lives in Canberra with his wife and two children and the dog he brought home from Afghanistan. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Michelle shares her personal journey towards Unconditional Positive Regard and self acceptance through the lens of parenting. This is a story about relationships and ultimately the relationship you have with yourself.
Michelle Charfen has had a lifelong passion for learning. She was fascinated by the human body and from an early age dreamt of becoming a physician. In high school, she began tutoring students, discovering a love of facilitating learning for others as well. She would eventually study Human Biology as an undergraduate at Stanford, teach preschool during the summer vacations, and spend the year after graduation teaching at an elementary school in East Palo Alto.
Michelle’s childhood dream was finally realized upon attending Harvard Medical School. She then completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a research fellowship during which she obtained a Masters of Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at UCLA. Teaching medical students and residents in an academic environment was perfectly suited to her enthusiasm for constant learning. In 2008, she stepped down from her faculty position as an Assistant Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine to devote this period of life to her growing family while continuing to work part time in Emergency Medicine.
Her personal journey, struggles, and successes as a parent organically led to an interest in supporting other families. Michelle completed the Parent Educator Certification Program through Echo Parenting and Education, and now combines this training with her previous experience and knowledge to help others learn effective tools for compassionate communication.

From 2002 to 2014 Eric served as a US Marine. First as a Reconnaissance Marine and then as a Marine Raider with Marine Force Special Operations Command. He completed six combat deployments: four to Iraq and two to Afghanistan, including the invasion of Iraq and Operation Vigilant Resolve, as well as broad combat operations in Afghanistan. He has three awards for valour in combat, including Bronze Star with a V.
He is co-founder and Operations Director for NOVOMODUS a company that delivers change management, leadership and security solutions to organisations seeking effective and strategic change. He is also the country manager and trainer for Getting More Australia, training high-stakes negotiation to a broad range of clients from Google to Special Operations and Intelligence organisations throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
He lives in Canberra with his wife and two children and the dog he brought home from Afghanistan.

There are "no-lift" rules in place in many countries and not just for big patients - my point is that the diseases and complications caused by obesity mean you're more likely to land in hospital, unable to walk or stand up by yourself, thus increasing the chances you'll need a sling/winch.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Michelle shares her personal journey towards Unconditional Positive Regard and self acceptance through the lens of parenting. This is a story about relationships and ultimately the relationship you have with yourself.
Michelle Charfen has had a lifelong passion for learning. She was fascinated by the human body and from an early age dreamt of becoming a physician. In high school, she began tutoring students, discovering a love of facilitating learning for others as well. She would eventually study Human Biology as an undergraduate at Stanford, teach preschool during the summer vacations, and spend the year after graduation teaching at an elementary school in East Palo Alto.
Michelle’s childhood dream was finally realized upon attending Harvard Medical School. She then completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a research fellowship during which she obtained a Masters of Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at UCLA. Teaching medical students and residents in an academic environment was perfectly suited to her enthusiasm for constant learning. In 2008, she stepped down from her faculty position as an Assistant Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine to devote this period of life to her growing family while continuing to work part time in Emergency Medicine.
Her personal journey, struggles, and successes as a parent organically led to an interest in supporting other families. Michelle completed the Parent Educator Certification Program through Echo Parenting and Education, and now combines this training with her previous experience and knowledge to help others learn effective tools for compassionate communication.

He has three awards for valour in combat, including Bronze Star with a V.
He is co-founder and Operations Director for NOVOMODUS a company that delivers change management, leadership and security solutions to organisations seeking effective and strategic change. He is also the country manager and trainer for Getting More Australia, training high-stakes negotiation to a broad range of clients from Google to Special Operations and Intelligence organisations throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
He lives in Canberra with his wife and two children and the dog he brought home from Afghanistan.

Yes, I'm aware they use slings/winches to move hospital patients for many reasons, not just obesity. There are "no-lift" rules in place in many countries and not just for big patients - my point is that the diseases and complications caused by obesity mean you're more likely to land in hospital, unable to walk or stand up by yourself, thus increasing the chances you'll need a sling/winch.

The importance of overcoming your fears of change, embracing that life is change and acceptance of what is so you can get unstuck, move forward and reach your full potential in every area of your life that is important to you.
In this video coaching newsletter, I discuss an email from a female viewer who feels stuck in her life. She has overcome many challenges in the past such as addiction, codependency and how fucked up she used to be. She is struggling with accepting the fact that it is time to move on from her boyfriend of five years who she has known for a total of twelve years. Three years ago she was all ready to move out and move on with her life. Her career was going well and she knew it was time to move on. However, after a little birthday sex with her ex-boyfriend to be, she got pregnant. She knows that she should move on, but obviously having a daughter has complicated things. She asks my opinion on how she should go about ending this unhealthy relationship and moving on, but she also wonders if it is possible that he will change and what she should focus on to make a successful transition if she does decide to leave.

Three years ago she was all ready to move out and move on with her life. Her career was going well and she knew it was time to move on. However, after a little birthday sex with her ex-boyfriend to be, she got pregnant. She knows that she should move on, but obviously having a daughter has complicated things. She asks my opinion on how she should go about ending this unhealthy relationship and moving on, but she also wonders if it is possible that he will change and what she should focus on to make a successful transition if she does decide to leave.
