The Great North Run is the largest half marathon in the world, taking place annually in North East England each September. Participants run between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields. The run was devised by former Olympic 10,000 m bronze medallist and BBC Sport commentator Brendan Foster.
The first Great North Run was staged on 28 June 1981, when 12,000 runners participated. By 2011, the number of participants had risen to 54,000. For the first year it was advertised as a local fun run; nearly thirty years on it has become one of the biggest running events in the world, and the biggest in the UK. Only the Great Manchester Run and London Marathon come close to attracting similar numbers of athletes each year.
The 1992 edition of the race incorporated the 1st IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Martin Mathathi holds the current men's course record with his run of 58:56 minutes in 2011. Mary Jepkosgei Keitany's women's course record of 65:39 minutes, was set in 2014.
Mohamed Muktar Jama "Mo" Farah CBE (born 23 March 1983) is a British distance runner. On the track, he mostly competes over 5000 metres and 10,000 metres, but has run competitively from 1500 metres to the marathon. He was a gold medallist in the 5000 m and 10,000 m at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2015 World Championships in Athletics. He also completed that double at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics and the European Athletics Championships in 2010 and 2014 (the first British male winner of all those events). He was the second man in history to win long-distance doubles at successive Olympics and World Championships.
Born in Somalia, Farah moved to the United Kingdom as a child. He was originally based in London and ran for Newham and Essex Beagles athletics club, training at St Mary's University College, Twickenham from 2001 to 2011. He has trained with Alberto Salazar in Portland, Oregon since 2011. Farah runs distances races tactically, but also can maintain a fast pace and has a quick sprint finish.
Great may refer to:
North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.
People Like Us is the stage name of London DJ multimedia artist Vicki Bennett. She has released a number of albums featuring collages of music and sound since 1992. In recent years, she has performed at a number of modern art galleries, festivals and universities.
Since 1991 Vicki Bennett has been making CDs, radio, and A/V multimedia under the name People Like Us. By animating and recontextualising found footage collages Vicki gives an equally witty and dark view of popular culture with a surrealistic edge. People Like Us broadcasts an ongoing experimental arts radio and podcast show on WFMU, called "DO or DIY", which, since it began in 2003, has had over three-quarters of a million RealPlayer hits.
Vicki has shown work at, amongst others, Tate Modern, The National Film Theatre, Purcell Room, The ICA, Sydney Opera House, Pompidou Centre, Sonar in Barcelona, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the BBC and Channel 4. She has also performed radio sessions for the BBC's John Peel, Mixing It, and also CBC, KPFA and many more in the US. There have been features in The Observer, The Wire, NME, BBC website and Bizarre Magazine. People Like Us have been commissioned by The Arts Council England, The BBC, Sonic Arts Network, Forma, LUX and Lovebytes amongst others (see further down for full list).

https://grtrun.org/North The Great North Run, was first staged in 1981 where just over 12,000 people took part on the 13.1 mile course from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields; with entries reaching 57,000 people in 2014.
The 'Great Street Games' was a giant, networked inter-city game played between Gateshead, Middlesbrough and Sunderland (all in the North East of England) between 28th October and 1st November 2009. The piece was created to explore a sense of connection and playfulness in multiple urban open spaces, using only projected light and sound. The essence of the game was to knock the pucks of light into the goals at each end of the playing area, when they would be instantly transferred to the playing area in another city. This footage is from Baltic Square, Gateshead. I'm working on an edit at the moment with all cities, but I thought this moment captured the spirit of the piece well and was worth uploading in its unedited state. More information about the piece can be found at www.greatstreetg...
by Vicki Bennett (People Like Us) http://www.peoplelikeus.org/2009/parade.html While viewing and sourcing content from the Great North Run film archive, it occurred to me that the huge crowds that come to spectate this event are as important as the participator. I arranged film frame layers across the screen so that they strayed outwards in the direction of the natural panning of the original shots - much more in accordance with the natural gaze of the spectator, revealing a unique panoramic view of the content. The irregular angles and shifting perspectives bring to mind Cubist photomontage and Cubist/Vorticist painting/collage, with the added dimension of the moving image naturally taking this to another level. Given that this is a celebration of human achievement, and as a nod of ap...
Great Street Games was a projected created by KMA for the cities of Gateshead, Middlesbrough and Sunderland as part of the cultural programme of the Great North Run in October 2009. It took the form of a live, simultaneous light installation and game played between the three cities, using pedestrians as participants. In essence, the game involved pushing 'pucks' of light from your city's playing space into those of the other cities, points being awarded for every 'goal' scored. All the graphics, audio, modelling, motion capture and simulation was generated using Max/MSP and Jitter, and a custom server was build using Max/MSP to coordinate the game-play between each site. A live video stream from each venue was broadcast online via livestream so online users could watch the games unfold fr...

Headed up with the boys to get a late season run on Horsepasture creek in North Carolina. Great lines and great times.
Our original plan was to make it back into the middle box for a second d of BS falls. Due to a 3 hour late start we were unable to make an attempt on the beautifully dangerous gorge down stream. however we were able to still make it an exciting day for everybody, myself included. David Schmitt and I popped four Box Elder Cherries that day and it was hard not to find a smile on any face. no broken boats, one swim on loaf, and one dropped boat on the hike out( not saying names...Smauk) flows were min but great for the middle of April considering Casper,Wyoming is north of Colorado. After a great run down the gorge we rested a bit before the steep hike back out to the car on top.
