The Tsugaru Strait (津軽海峡, Tsugaru Kaikyō) is a strait between Honshu and Hokkaido in northern Japan connecting the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean. It was named after the western part of Aomori Prefecture. The Seikan Tunnel passes under it at its narrowest point 12.1 miles (19.5 km) between Tappi Misaki on the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, Honshu, and Shirakami Misaki on the Matsumae Peninsula in Hokkaido.
Japan's territorial waters extend to three nautical miles (5.6 km) into the strait instead of the usual twelve, reportedly to allow nuclear-armed United States Navy warships and submarines to transit the strait without violating Japan's prohibition against nuclear weapons in its territory.
The Tsugaru Strait has eastern and western necks, both approximately 20 km across with maximum depths of 200 m and 140 m respectively.
In the past, the most common way for passengers and freight to cross the strait was on ferries, approximately a four-hour journey.
On September 26, 1954, 1,172 lives were lost when the ferry Tōya Maru sank in the strait.
The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south and is bounded by Asia and Australia in the west and the Americas in the east.
At 165.25 million square kilometers (63.8 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean—and, in turn, the hydrosphere—covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth's land area combined.
The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).
The eastern Pacific Ocean was first sighted by Europeans in the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great "southern sea" which he named Mar del Sur. The ocean's current name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, as he encountered favourable winds on reaching the ocean. He called it Mar Pacifico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means "peaceful sea".

North Pacific Ocean en-route to Tsugaru Strait, with the snow melts
ENGLISH LYRICS: When I got off the late night train that departed from Ueno station, Aomori station was covered in snow. The crowd of people returning home north was silent, so I listened only to the rumbling of the sea. I too board the ferryboat alone. Staring at the seagulls out there in the freezing cold, I cry. Oh, the winter scenery at Tsugaru Strait. "Look, that is Tappi Cape, the northernmost point," say strangers, as they point their fingers. I tried wiping the glass window that has been clouded by my breath, but all I can see in the distance is mist. Farewell my love, I'm going home. The voice of the wind shakes my heart, bringing me to tears. Oh, the winter scenery at Tsugaru Strait. Farewell my love, I'm going home. The voice of the wind shakes my heart, bringing me to tears. Adam Walker, the British Oceans7 challenger from Nottinghamshire completed his 5th channel swim on 12th August 2013 with a 15.5 hour battle against the strong current and waves in the Tsugaru Strait. Swimming from Aomori to Hokkaido, Adam has to power through the current to keep himself on track. This is Adams toughest channel swim to date. Having had an operation on his left shoulder in Jan 13, he was concerned that it may affect his performance. For everyone on the boat it was an emotional finish, having watched Adam relentlessly fight the ocean to reach his goal. The Cook Strait in New Zealand and The Irish Sea are the 2 swims left on Adams list to complete! Music by Reckless www.recklessband.co.uk

Area Characteristics Aomori Prefecture which is at the northern tip of the main island of Honshu is surrounded on three sides by ocean and once you cross Tsugaru Strait, you will come to Hokkaido up north. It is one of Japan’s areas of heavy snowfall and even in the summer, it is rare for temperatures to go beyond 30 degrees Celsius. Beginning with the virgin forest expanse of Shirakami-Sanchi which has been recognized as a World Heritage site, the prefecture has many examples of nature including Lake Towada, the Hakkoda Mountains and the Shimokita Peninsula. JR Hakodate Station is the main gateway for the Hakodate City in the Hokkaido Region. This station gained more importance since the Seikan Under Sea tunnel opened between the main Japanese Island of Honshu and Hokkaido. Now there are train services from Aomori side to the Hokkaido Region often, improving the transportation to the Hokkaido Region. Currently there is no bullet train service to Hakodate from the main Island (as of 2014) but plans are underway to extend the Tohoku Shinkansen first to Hakodate and then eventually to Sopporo. This new Shinkansen line will be called Hokkaido Shinkansen. The Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido under the Tsugaru Strait is the longest and the deepest operational rail tunnel in the world. Enjoy.

This work records the "Super Hakucho No.95", departing Hachinohe in the morning, aiming the front view filmed at the space under the driving cab all the way to Hakodate fo...
