Ògùn is a state in southwestern Nigeria. Created in 1976, it borders Lagos State to the south, Oyo and Osun states to the north, Ondo State to the east and the Republic of Benin to the west. Abeokuta is the capital and largest city in the state. The state's nickname is "Gateway to Nigeria". It was created in February 1976 from the former Western State. The 2006 census recorded a total population of 3,751,140 residents. The incumbent State Governor is Senator Ibikunle Amosun (2011-date).
Other cities and towns in the Ogun State are Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, Ijebu Igbo, Ilaro Ayetoro and Ota. Ogun State has several local and international businesses and factories strategically sited within the 2 km government acquisition area of the Lagos - Sagamu expressway. The businesses include Dangote's cement factory in Ibese, Nestle, DHL, Big Treat, and Coleman Cables.
Ogun State consists of twenty (20) Local Government Areas. They are:
A state government (provincial government in Canada) is the government of a country subdivision in a federal form of government, which shares political power with the federal or national government. A state government may have some level of political autonomy, or be subject to the direct control of the federal government. This relationship may be defined by a constitution.
The reference to "state" denotes country subdivisions which are officially or widely known as "states", and should not be confused with a "sovereign state". Provinces are usually divisions of unitary states. Their governments, which are also provincial governments, are not the subject of this article.
The United States and Australia are the main examples of federal systems in which the term "state" is used for the subnational components of the federation. In addition, the Canadian provinces fulfil a similar role. The term for subnational units in non-English-speaking federal countries may also often be translated as "state", e.g. States of Germany (German Länder).

Nigerian students in their large numbers marched on Ogun state to challenge the state government over funding of education in the state. In a tense meeting with the state governor, student leaders challenged the governor, "If you want citizens to make a sacrifice, you must make sacrifices with your outrageous allowances And salaries."
Falling global crude oil prices and a depreciating currency have devastated the Nigerian economy. It recently slipped into a recession and economists predict that it could get worse in the coming months. It's prompted the government to look into diversifying the economy.
